usually when I tell someone what an instance is, I throw a few synonyms in there
I feel like just saying "instance/proxy" can help, providers sounds good too, also gateways, servers, relays...

On another note, don’t you think it’s a little weird that someone from world is saying to not follow small instances?
Where is that comment? I didn't see it. Maybe they're thinking back when it was really hard to get new communities federated, but it's not so bad these days, and even the medium sizes instances already have tons of communities already federated.
anyways I think we should've give people too much trouble as long as they're joining the Fediverse lol, they can move instances as they get a feel for it
both sides need approval from the instance owner
I think the ideal would be a kind of recommendation system based on tastes and interests. When you go to the Mastodon site to register, it asks you your main interests and based on those it recommends one or another instance.

I think Panzer Dragoon Saga, the JRPG. It was stuck on the doomed Saturn, but it's a really great game. Everyone go emulate it.
Seems like instance admins already sort of have the ability to hide communities from all, like how Reddit would hide certain subs from r/all
