I wouldn't expect the UI/UX to magically improve, in the same way that e.g. Audacity's is, or Blender's did back in the day.

LibreOffice is ancient and enormous. It would take a decent sized team several years to overhaul its UX.

Obscure 10 years ago maybe. These days there have been so many articles about them I bet they're more widely known than more useful and standard things like prefix trees (aka tries).

Don't be naive and think they can't block this stuff because of encryption. They just go after the business entities. Eventually you'll only be left with super sketchy options that they'll try to block by IP.

Yeah obviously. Whenever a company says "we can't get enough X workers" they implicitly mean "at the price we want to pay".

But that doesn't mean they were wrong. Programming is still an amazingly well paying and low stress career. Being replaced by AI is a little worrying, but I think by the time AI is good enough to really replace programmers, it will also be able to replace most white collar jobs - HR, finance, etc. - and society will have bigger problems.

You can easily avoid the latter by using the LTSC IoT version. I just bought a new (second hand) computer for TPM (my old one was very due for an upgrade).

With the IoT version it's absolutely fine. Definitely an improvement over Windows 10. The only issue I've noticed is it doesn't come with Windows Game bar or some nonsense so after you run games you'll get a random dialog about there not being an app available to handle ms-gamelink URLs or something. You can just ignore it. I might fix it one day.

I dunno what you mean about it being an expressive language either. I would say it is relatively low on the expressiveness scale compared to something like Python or OCaml. It's basically as expensive as Go which is renowned for being unexpressive. Maybe you didn't mean "expressive".

Yes. For the project I work on pip install takes about 60 seconds and replacing it with uv reduces that to about 7 seconds. That's a very significant improvement. Much less annoying interactively and in CI we do this multiple times so it saves a significant chunk of time.

I kind of think this is a bad idea because environment variables can be read from anywhere and aren't designed to be secret.

But I'm not sure what a better solution is tbh.
