I drove a 20+ year old car up until I had a kid, and suddenly I started to care about those safety features from the previous 20 years (like airbags and crumple zone improvements).
Unfortunately Lemmy has one major problem when it comes to banning spam bots. Only the instance that a user belongs to can ban the user in a way that federates to other instances. This means if that particular instance doesn't quickly ban the user, then hundreds of other instances need to do it manually. Currently, a pretty significant percentage of spammers get banned individually by many instances.
If we had 100x as many users and 100x as many instances, we would have 100x as many bot accounts for every instance to ban.
The solution is probably something like shared ban lists or ban mirroring (setting an instance up to ban every user that some trusted instance bans). But right now it's just people clicking, and it's not scalable.
Lemmy definitely has LLM bot accounts, but the Lemmy is operating at a scale of tens of thousands of users where Mastodon has a couple of million. There's a lot of manual action by Lemmy admins that probably won't scale well when there are millions of users.
As someone else already mentioned, it's almost certainly already happening. Lemmy federates with Mastodon, and Mastodon has a user base and a volume of content that would be hard to ignore. So there are likely many Mastodon instances that are slurping up content from Mastodon, Lemmy, Piefed, Pixelfed, anything else across the Fediverse, and using this to train AI.
It would just be nice if they didn't crash servers doing it.
I once read an article advocating for collecting the forestry slash and using it at geothermal power plants to add extra heat to the water to create more power. I get that they would still need to collect the wood off the beach like they are trying to avoid due to the cost, but what if that cost could be subsidised by selling the wood instead of burning it?
Or just subsidised by the creaters of this forestry slash having to pay for its clean up?

It must be a difficult decision for DOC between publicly asking people to avoid the whale knowing many people may purposely go to look for it now they know it's there, vs not mentioning it and having people hear about it another way and go to try to approach it without knowing the rules around it.
Bots scraping the website cause high levels of server load because compiling a page is an intensive activity, and so instance admins are taking active steps to stop this in order to stop all the scrapers bringing down the server.
But if they actually wanted Lemmy content (as opposed to the bots scraping everything on the internet they can find, and happening across Lemmy) then they can just start an instance and have other instances send them the content via normal federation. It would be almost impossible to tell this from a normal instance, and would be more efficient for everyone involved.
Sorry you're right, it's not cranes and they aren't holding it up just keeping it steady. But my tower didn't need that, I built it strong enough it could atand of it's own accord.
Only to the ceiling, mind you. I don't have enough lego to go up 36 metres.
Damn, and I thought I was doing well building from the floor to the ceiling. Mine was freestanding though, it didn't need cranes to hold it up.

I have a Reolink doorbell cam. I bought the POE version, have it connected to Frigate on my server for object detection purposes and triggering alerts, and the alerts are delivered via Home Assistant notifications.
So I guess it's possible to do it reasonably privately, even if using the Reolink app isn't.
