Ask at the desk if they have any train horns.

The next person that cuts you off is gonna pee their pants.

We loooooooove gelato in Italy. It is magical to my husband and me.

We have tried to find an acceptable substitute in the US, but nothing is "right". I don't know if it's the geographical influence on the taste of our dairy, or USDA standards for keeping ice cream a bit too cold. We haven't found a place here that's advertising "gelato" that gets anywhere close to the experience of gelato in Italy.

But we randomly stopped at a gelateria in Akhihabara, Tokyo. Low expectations, but we wanted a snack. And that was hands down the best gelato we've ever had outside Italy. 5 stars.

Haggis pizza?! I need to try this.

Maybe I was just cold and wet and hungry and tired, but the best haggis I've had was on a baked potato with cheddar cheese at the Culloden battlefield visitor center cafe. Man that hit the spot.

In America, the best approximation we can get to chippy chips are our steak fries. It's the cut of potato that's most similar, but there is a whole spectrum of doneness that one is rolling the dice on when ordering steak fries.

And you're right. There ain't nothing like chippy chips. I'm over here chasing a dragon when I should just be buying a plane ticket.

I have had many, many cats. Each one holds a piece of my heart.

I don't think of adopting another one as replacing one I just lost.

I'm offering a home, love, and care to another animal to honor all those that came before.

What are you? The fun police?

[–] KittenBiscuits@lemmy.today 2 points 3 months ago

There shall be no sticking the rough, dirty, or wet.

Or if you do, it shall not be fun.

So necromantic!

This thing, right?

[–] KittenBiscuits@lemmy.today 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

You got me. Sort of.

There was a third baby that declined to be photographed. I'm going to assume he is Leonardo because he evaded notice & capture the longest.

No idea where Michaelangelo is.

I don't have any rats on the local feral roster but I do feed a opossum. Will he do? I'm quite sure it's a he because he's been coming around now a few months and he doesn't bring any babies with him. Your other choices are a fat raccoon, Charlie the Cat, and his feline pal/nemesis Hairy.

Found these cuties by my house and airlifted them to a pond next door to live sunny pond turtle lives.

And that's totally ok for both of you to feel that way. It ultimately depends on the chemistry going on in one's brain. Just because your wife and I are tomboys doesn't mean we view ourselves as nonbinary, but for my roomie who was also not a girly girl yet also not a tomboy, they decided that nonbinary more accurately described how they thought about themselves. I could have a tomboy identical twin and they could feel like they were more nonbinary or transgendered than I do. Or they could feel like a girl (like me) and be more attracted to girls than I am. It's up to the individual to determine what seems most right for them.

My hubby isn't a "manly man" in the sense that he doesn't religiously follow sports or go hunting or tinker in the garage, but he very much identifies as male, and his coworkers often call him the 'alpha' (which I hesitated to mention because we both feel the alpha/beta categorizing culture is pretty cringey, but I went ahead and brought it up to illustrate that others see him as quite assertive). He just has an authority rebelliousness and speaks up for the group and calls people/mgmt on their bullshit.

If 2 people are really alike in terms of hobbies and style and personality, they could still differ in how they perceive their gender. And to make things even more complicated, how one perceives their gender may not match up with the sexual equipment they have. That is a factor in how many trans people experience dysphoria. What they see in the mirror doesn't match up with how they feel. Imagine if you got Freaky Fridayed into someone else's body unexpectedly, how you would react to looking in a mirror. That can be how they feel about it every time they look in a mirror.

I will say that I'm proud of you for asking questions and being curious. That's how we learn. I myself went through the "isn't gender and sex the same thing??" And once I grasped how it's not how society labels a person but how that person determines this for themselves, same as how I determine for myself that just because I don't like makeup doesn't mean I'm trans, that it kind of clicked that how people present themselves and feel about themselves is a very personal journey, and that two similar people can come to two very different conclusions, both of which are correct. And that was a horribly long run-on sentence, but thank you for sticking with me to the end. 😄✌️

Nonbinary is how they view their own gender. They don't really see themselves as male or female, or they can identify with elements of both, and anything in between.

Sexual preference in a partner is where you would use the terms hetero, gay, bi, poly, ace.....

Like I identify as female. I was assigned female at birth. But I am by no means a girly girl. I am more comfortable hanging out with fellas. I do like dresses, sometimes. I do like heels, sometimes. I don't like makeup. I do like jewelry. Most often you will find me barefoot. I like smutty books, and football, and crochet, and power tools, and flowers, and using my truck for truck things like hauling, towing, and pulling my husband's cute little convertible out of a ditch.

My old college roomie is nonbinary. They kind of have the same dressing and hobby and entertainment preferences as me. We are really compatible. I've often thought if I wasn't with my husband, I could see myself with them. But they made the call that they are more in the middle, and don't identify female, yet not quite male either. Their term (it may be a loaded term for some folks) for themselves is something other, with 'nonbinary' being the closest they can come with today's terminology to describe it. Yet they do have a preference in sexual partner, they are not bi or poly, maybe a little ace.

Tl;dr nonbinary is how some folks see themselves and how they feel in their own skin, not what genitals they prefer on a sexual partner.

3-2-1 mug cake (lemmy.today)
submitted 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) by KittenBiscuits@lemmy.today to c/cooking@lemmy.world

I have tried the microwave cake packages from the store and a few other variations that ranged from not great to horrid, but today I think I found my "not too bad" microwave mug cake recipe.

I think the original 3-2-1 recipe was 3 parts cake mix, 2 parts liquid (water or milk), 1 min in the microwave. But the one I actually came across is as follows:

3 parts mix
2 parts liquid (I used water)
1 part fat (I only had EVOO & it surpringly didn't leave any olivy taste to it)
Appprox 1 minute in the microwave.

I think the standard measure here is supposed to be 1 Tbsp to make a batter of appropriate volume for the 1 minute in the microwave, but I had a big mug and used a coffee scoop which I think was about 1/8 Cup. It could have used a few more seconds in the microwave at those quantities. It came out like warm flourless torte.

I had some decorating frosting (like from a bag or pressurized can) and after I had to let it cool a bit, I had cake!

You could also try poking a chocolate candy in the batter before cooking to make a lava cake. But this is where I draw the line on quick-n-dirty struggle dessert vs better quality... please don't use Hershey minis. Use a Dove square or a Lindt truffle at the minimum. Or use a piece or two broken off a bar from Lidl or Aldi. Life is too short to eat terrible chocolate.

I came across this super adorable strawberry garland in a home goods store yesterday (but not the actual Home Goods). It delights me when I run across little kits in stores where I don't expect crafting items, or at least don't expect consistency in crafting items, like close-out type stores.

Now I probably could have found a similar pattern for garland on Ravelry, but sometimes a little kit just is fun to dig into because all the necessary bits are right there. I have a work conference coming up, and I am thinking this will fit easily in a baggie to take with me to the breakout sessions.

No wip pics to share yet as it were. Just wanted to share my excitement at finding such a cute little set. 🧶

The instructions read 1) no outside food or drinks (no drinks will be a problem for me). 2) No phone (understandable), or phone turned all the way off and locked in some kind of security pouch, may as well just leave it in the car. 3) No electronics of any kind including an e-reader.

I know I'm there to do my civic duty. I also know there is a lot of downtime. And I know my ability to sit quietly and pay attention is a finite resource. What is allowed (knowing my mileage may vary)?

  • paperback book?
  • paper sudoku book?
  • I crochet, could I bring a SMALL project?
  • I need caffeine to not suffer withdrawal headaches but don't drink coffee, so could I bring a water additive that's caffinated? Are all outside liquids banned? My fave is a small squeeze bottle, but I can get some powder packs. (I have ADHD, am successfully medicated, but court would still be challenging. Not only do I need help with alertness, but my meds cause dry mouth, so I always have something I carry with me)
  • On that note, can I bring my own empty water bottle?

My precious fluffy girls will not let me have any alone time with yarn.

The two I can think of are:

  • It's Not Unusual
  • Escape (The Piña Colada Song)

Found this little eastern worm snake adrift at "sea" on my pool thermometer and airlifted it to shore. It must have entered ~~fight, flight, or~~ freeze mode, poor thing, because it was a good 10 minutes before it departed its makeshift raft.

PS, I do have escape platforms for critters in the pool but the dumdums never seem to use them. Then again, I'm obviously not getting to meet the ones that did find and use them.

PPS, I can't get over how teeny this little one is! I'm experiencing some acute cute aggression!

I done fucked up. I know some of my drink cups say handwash only, but I thought that was due to their vacuum chambers.

I assumed (wrongly) that these two bottles would be ok. They are clearly not made from whatever Nalgene is made from.

Meanwhile, I have some cheap vacuum wall plastic tumblers from Walmart, going on 15 years now, that I've always tossed in the dishwasher.

Also, I'm getting strong deja vu from my shrinky dink bottles. Have I done this before? Or seen a post on here if the same? I can't recall.

Edit: hello adhd brain, I forgot to provide details. Red 1L Nalgene for scale. The two bottles beside it used to be the same size before yesterday. ☹️
