Public information.

The gates opened onto Hell. Almost half of humanity died. Then the gates closed. Now there is the Cortex.

The Cortex keeps one official story: the supernatural is real, and people should be glad of the watching. Under it, humanity endures. The innocent have nothing to hide. Observe. Contain. Control.

Not everyone fits inside that story. Some natures hunger. Some listen. Some inherit powers no one authorized. Outside the Cortex's reach, communities hold their own beliefs, and those beliefs are not always a comfort.

The setting is the ground for Paroxysm, a text-only MUD in early alpha. The part I would most like feedback on is the tension the Cortex creates: a state that protects people by treating everyone as a risk. What would you add to that?

Cortex public information: a small multiplayer text game is open for testing.

Paroxysm is a free, text-only, Diku-based MUD for adults only (18+). It is in early alpha, so expect rough edges, unfinished areas and a small player base.

Setting: World War II ended with a portal to Hell, and the Cortex world government now manages the supernatural. Archetypes: vampire, werewolf, faeborn, demonborn, angelborn, demigod. Mature themes are part of the game; this post is deliberately kept clean.

There is no web client. You connect with a MUD client or telnet:

Cortex public information.

Paroxysm is a free, text-only multiplayer roleplaying game (a MUD). It is in early alpha and is for adults only (18+).

In its setting the Second World War ended with a portal to Hell, and a world government called the Cortex now manages the supernatural. Vampire is one of six archetypes, alongside werewolf, faeborn, demonborn, angelborn and demigod.

It runs on a Diku-based codebase. There is no web client: connect with a MUD client or telnet to mud.paroxysmrpg.com, port 3000.

Question for this community: which vampire stories (books, games, films) do you think handle the cost of immortality well? We are building the vampire archetype and would like to read what others value.
