I think it's some Rastafarian UK thing. They do claim connection to Israel.

Fool. Wong question.

"Do things in undiscovered extra dimensions affect our dimension by way gravity?"

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 1 points 2 hours ago

Yeah, my point is that even once you get outside the "acceptable" side of Europe for racists, everyone on the Med looks the same if you don't know the really subtle traits between smaller ethnic groups.

The reasons for numerous Italian lynchings are equally numerous. And equally sketchy and stupid. That's my point there, is that being marked "white" on paper does not confer the same benefit as being perceived as "white" in a community. 20% of reported lynchings in the American South were not black people.

Exactly. The definition and its application are entirely subjective.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago

Exactly, that's my point. Race is a stupid concept.

White people are typically shocked that there are ethnic groups in Africa, and it's not all just "assorted blacks." And that they don't really all get along.

Meanwhile, I once explained the Balkan wars to people I worked with in West Africa. One of them genuinely asked "What? Why? They're all white!"

Oh, because tatsy crop was for feeding to human children. Now children hungry, elephant not hungry.

It's entirely based on the culture at the time. Not just the tolerance of racial diversity in media, or the definition of "whiteness," but also education about the source material.

Greeks aren't white, Western Europeans. Not even like Slavs from just north of there. They're as white as Turks and Egyptians and Southern Italians. Italians were lynched in the South in 1891. Show these racist fucks a picture of the Greek national football team, and then the Mexican, Egyptian, Isreali, or Algerian national team, and have them bet $20,000 they can guess them right. Same goes for TV news anchors in those places, I would imagine.

Anyone calling Greeks "white" is thinking of Renaissance paintings where Jesus was also blonde haired and blue-eyed.

Starpage, Qwant, and Brave search are all out there, just waiting for you.

Elephants regularly raid crops and eat a month's worth of a family's food in a night.

Then when humans get mad and take revenge, they get in trouble because other humans who don't have to grow their food in a village near a park explained that Europeans killed to many elephants before, and now no one else can because it's gross to make statues out of something's teeth.

More evidence that humans are not smarter than elephants.

Awesome short term scam. Signing bonus just for a BS parade. Just can't do that too many times if you actually think you'll work in that industry.

"I hate the commies! But I won't pay for news, either!" Brilliant.

I dunno, didn't see fries mentioned, either.

Mine: Once had a meeting with a guy that wanted to be a Starlink distributor in a developing country. His first time in country, had just arrived like 24 hours before. Knew nothing and no one. No idea why he wanted to talk to me, but, whatever...

Wanted to have his "business partner" in on the meeting, and called some douche that talked for 5 solid minutes about how he could see the Cape Kennedy launch tower from his window and whatever else about how amazing he was and so tied in to Elon and all this BS. Called long distance on a real phone line to the States. Not WhatsApp, not even a VOIP or Wifi calling call. I watched him dial +1.... he had a local SIM.

Turns out neither of them even knew which ministry they would need to start with to get a permit for satellite internet service. They just wanted to sell dishies in country and had no idea how to even start a business locally. Didn't look at a single thing online before coming out. They didn't even know about local content policies that effectively meant they needed a local business to sponsor them. I sat and searched online with the guy and showed him everything they needed to see, which was on 1 website.

This was before COVID, and the country only got Starlink 2 years ago.

I'm writing a story that has some loose influencer parallels in a more fantasy/scifi setting. It's more or less one character's dynamics reflect this, not the whole story.

I just figured that the dynamics with the people flocking around the character are enthusiastic incompetence. Which sounds like Veep. But with the influencer subculture. Which...correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't that basically what influencers are IRL?

I spent more time than I should have (20 minutes!) watching random influencer rant videos yesterday to get a feel for some of the dynamics, and.....whooooo. Please someone take this idea and run with it.

IG boyfriend living in hell filming their gf in spandex doing stupid stuff over and over. A subplot where two such IG bfs are actually secretly hooking up and are doing this all to write a movie about it. An influencer that does it all herself and puts together videos that always seem a little off because it takes her so long to make a single video. A parent forcing their marginally willing child into videos.

The entire first season could be the entitlement and drama of 4 people trying to go to Coachella.

I don't have the heart and hate in me, nor the time on IG, to give this idea justice.

Tons of ways to go with this - more than I'll ever know. If anyone ever does it - just put Lemmy in the "Special Thanks" section.

Add CGI droids to Wrath of Kahn?

Add a terrible CGI jazz number to the opening of Final Frontier instead of Row Row Row Your Boat?

A scene where Kirk walks around one of the whales from Voyage Home and steps over their tail?

What would you add? Take a film and go to town.

My thirst for corn has not been quenched.

I'm looking at a job based around Joburg, and looks like it might actually happen.

I've lived in the SADC region about 10 years ago and spent time in Cape Town and Rosemont at the time. Curious how day to day living is these days, boks, loadshedding, etc.

The same company, based in Carson City, NV, also posted a job a while back about polling in Hungary. I'm sure for only super academic reasons.

I grew up in a shitberg redneck town.

Succession? Could be Bobby Dave's HVAC Empire.

Beast In Me? Country-ass redneck issues in NYC.

It goes on and on. As with Greek tragedies, very little separates the shepherd and the king.

Edit: I challenge you to name any show or movie about modern rich people that I can't put in a redneck context

Hi all,

I'm doing my first round of distro hopping, looking for something stable and falls into the "just works" category. I'm not looking to tinker. Trying to see if something will tempt me away from Mint, and would like the added security of a rolling release.

I'm testing out OpenSuse TW in VirtualBox and the second thing I tried to install was Google Earth Pro, which I do use regularly enough that it's maybe not a dealbreaker, but it's a check point for testing out a distro.

Short version is that it's a mismatch of repos and libraries and the flatback says no-go because of a bad executable stack. I've spent days off and on trying to reinstall and fix in a way that works based on rare and meager instances years ago of people running into the same problem. Nothing works and I'm apparently not advanced enough of a Linux user to wrap my head around how to approach this other than stumbling down a few paths that don't work.

Is this something to be expected with TW? Or is this somehow unique to Google Earth Pro? Or is this a VirtualBox issue? (it shouldn't be).

Any help is appreciated.
