But here I am arguing to not have either on the user object at all. They are only needed at the start of a request and should never be needed after that point. So no point in attaching them to a user object - just verify the username and password and pass around user object after that without either the password or hash. That assumes they will share a meaningful amount of work. I do not see what Apple have done to help much at all - completely closed ecosystem with their own custom chips that they are not going to want to share.

MS have done a really bad job as well at getting ARM to kick off and have not been putting a huge effort into it that I have seen. And especially since valve is doing this in part to get away from MS systems why would MS help valve with this goal?

So yeah, if they did put in and share the effort it would take less time. But I don't see them doing that. Plus, it takes years to develop a product like this. And all evidence ATM suggests they have barely if at all started on the next version. Which does suggest that the next deck is likely more than a year away, likely two. Which does increase the chances that it could be arm based.

And given some recent news about Valve working on an ARM emulator and funding Arch Linux to help them start supporting ARM as well they might be working towards that. Though if that is for the deck 2 or something else further in the future is yet to be seen.

And then relabel all the old standards when they create a new one so every generation you need to figure-out what al the new names mean.

It requires you model your problem perfectly from the start, then it can work alright. But in reality you cannot know the future and when new requirements come in that don't fit the model you created you are left in a crappy spot of needing to refactor everything or just cram it in however you can.

If the trademark is indeed on the wordpress.org foundation and not the wordpress.com company, I didn’t think that’s a fair argument.

It is but the trademark is licensed to Automattic which handles all further commercial sub-licensing. And the CEO of Automattic sits on the board of the workpress foundation and is the creator of wordpress itself.

I don’t think either is a cancer to the FOSS Wordpress ecosystem. Both seem to give back.

I believe that this all started as the Automattic CEO did not think that WPEngine was contributing enough back to the wordpress ecosystem. Even after years of attempts to negotiate this. Seems he gave up trying and went after them for trademark rules as that was the only real leaver he had to pull. Since there is no obligation for WPEngine to contribute back to wordpress directly.

Apparently this is contentious enough to be disputed in court not everyone thinks this and there are enough people that are confused over the matter that Automattic believe they can prove a trademark volition in court.

Spammers don't want high karma accounts, they want higher valued accounts. Karma is just one (very easy to gain and view) indication of value. The lack of karma does not mean that spammers wont want to buy accounts on the Lemmy, just that the metrics they used to judge a valuable account are different and less transparent.
