From reading the blog post, I'm guessing you're right. They now have to understand what the AI did and clean up after it. But they will do so with more AI. It's doubtful there will anybody who actually understands the codebase.

I'll wait a few months and then check in again.

It stores all metadata in YAML frontmatter and doesn't cache in an SQLite blob? I bet that decision will be reversed pretty quickly once people try to migrate a 10k+ note collection and want to do operations like search immediately instead of scanning every file to build an in-memory cache.

Is retroshare the new iteration of this?

It happens all the time, a maintainer quits/abandons some opensource project due to economic realities. There are comics, jokes, threads, and so on about what the realities of maintaining opensource software are and that most people are not willing to donate or contribute in any way besides opening issues.

There is a lot of resistance to stuff like the business source license, but people do have to earn a living somehow. Doing so with opensource would be amazing. In lieu of the contested licence, could a template similar to Reminna's actually work? Basically "pay to get this fixed/implemented, make a PR, or it's low priority/ 'I will get to it when I get to it'".

Relevant part of template

### Contributions

In return, or to fix this issue, I'd be willing to:

 - [ ] Fix this myself.
 - [ ] [Donate](https://remmina.org/donations/) ___ and/or have donated ___ towards fixing it.
 - [ ] Take a donation of ___ to fix it.
 - [ ] Update the [documentation](https://remmina.gitlab.io/remminadoc.gitlab.io/md__c_o_n_t_r_i_b_u_t_i_n_g.html).
 - [ ] Update the [wiki](https://gitlab.com/Remmina/Remmina/-/wikis/home).
 - [ ] Translate Remmina in my native language(s) (___) on [Hosted Weblate](https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/remmina/remmina/).

In terms of its usability, not its deficits.

I've tried watching videos about it, but they are not analysing the reasons. Instead it's just whining about the symptoms and hypocrisy of rich CEOs firing employees then buying a yacht. We all know it's terrible, but my question is "why". "herp derp, capitalism" and "omg, it's the fucking CEOs" doesn't explain anything.

I don't have a Github account after deleting it some time after it was ought by Microsoft. Given the rise of anti-US sentiment and calls to stop using their products, more people leaving Github might be a real occurrence. How can I and others who have left, are leaving, and will leave Github, be able to contribute?

We don't want to deal with the administration required to properly handle donations. If we don't need funding, we won't risk becoming dependent on it. And also: no donations means no expectations. This means that people working on LibreWolf are free to move on to other projects whenever they want.

Basically, I'd like to have my own domain e.g onlinepersona@mydomain.com but not go through the hassle of hosting my own email service: I'd like to use another service that handled SPF, DMARC, and whatever else for me, grab the emails from their service using POP, and make it available to my email client on android and Linux using IMAP. SMTP will be through the third party.

This way, if the third party starts doing some bullshit like trying to lock me in, donating to a dickhead, or whatever else I disagree with, I can cancel my subscription, move to another third party, and keep all mails on my server.

How can I achieve this? Which search terms should I be using? "Self host email server" brings up stuff that's the equivalent of self-hosting gmail, AOL, posteo, kollabnow, or whatever, but that's not what I want. "Selfhost POP relay" doesn't have much better results, always bringing up SMTP relay...

I think it's obvious (and has been) that the linux kernel needs more contributors and more maintainers to share the load*. The Linux Foundation spending 2% on kernel development in 2024 (page 18) does something but not nearly enough.

Is there a way that we as a community / third parties / non kernel devs can fund kernel developers and maybe even get a kernel maintainer in there? Maybe something already exists or do we have to start something ourselves?

*: Yes, I understand our overworked maintainer problem (being one of these people myself), but here we have people actually doing the work! - Greg KH

I've got 64 GB of RAM and would like to force cargo to dump build artifacts into it. So basically the target/ directory should end up there.

Unless I'm mistaken RAM is much faster than SSDs and since I do rebuild quite often, it would save some R/W cycles on my SSD and allow faster file access.

I do jot mind doing a full rebuild every morning

Solution:

These 2 comments gave me the best indication how to do it: cargo ramdisk and build.target-dir config options.

Would be great if cargo had a build.target-dir-prefix though. One could set and env var CARGO_TARGET_DIR_PREFIX and point it at /dev/shm or /tmp if it's a tmpfs and every rust project would have its artefacts end up in RAM.

How do admins feel about users requesting (or creating) communities on here for blogging purposes? For example /c/online persona or /c/online persona sibling or something similar.

I saw somebody talking about how they started doing that on another server and simply linking to it on reddit to get traction in the fediverse. It seems like a great idea to me. Blogs are shared quite often and them being on Lemmy allows for new entries to simply show up in the local feed. They can be easily crossposted and commented on in Lemmy and across the fediverse if I'm not mistaken.

The only problem I could see is are naming conflicts. For example if somebody reads this and immediately creates /c/onlinepersona to block me from creating that to force a report to the admins. Or the reverse, a user creating the name "programming-guides" to then claim a community with the same name.

Thoughts?

Every week or so there seems to be drama about some old dude shouting about how rust in the Linux kernel is bad. Given all the open hostility, is there easier way for R4L to continue their work?

24

I know little about gradle and have only just started exploring it, so this is just a question out of curiosity.

It's supposedly a language agnostic dependency manager and builder, yet it seems to have only found its niche in Java. C/C++ projects could definitely do with dependency resolution...

[-] onlinepersona@programming.dev 59 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Maven and Cradle might be terrible, but C and C++ have fucking nothing in terms of dependency management. Even C# has something that few people use, but it has something. C and C++ are such a shit show to build. It's so bad they had to invent languages to build them and they regularly fuck up (CMake, make, bison, scons, meson, ...).

Pull a C or C++ project on a distro or environment and try to build it and you have to dive in the abyss of undeclared dependencies. And good fucking luck with glibc and glib dependencies. If the dev doesn't know which version they were actually using, it's up to you to find out. Fun for the entire family!

I think it's more a monopoly attempt. I wonder how the EU will react if someone takes this to court.

Forcing one app store fits the bill of monopolistic action.

There is no "middle ground". The solution is to talk about sex. Early and when it's prompted aka when children start asking questions.

Stop treating sex as if it's something holy, special, taboo, and assigning a bunch of value to it. Trying to shield children from it is precisely the wrong thing to do. It's exactly the same with this fairy tale bullshit about relationships, marriage, and kids. Media makes it seem like the epitome of existence, that there's nothing greater than finding that one special person, and that there's only one special person forever and ever, and that it has to be of the opposite sex in order to procreate.

The more you hype something up, and that includes trying to hide it, the more it tantalizes people.

Again, answer questions honestly and truthfully that pertain to sex, attraction, relationships, and so on. Teach how to tell the real from the fake. Normalize knowledge and understanding of intimacy. It'll make for much healthier children and even healthier adults.

Education is the silver bullet.

People mocked China, but here we are. Surveillance capitalism looked at that country and said "we can do better".

But people are fine with it because "I have nothing to hide" makes sense to them or they simply don't care - until something happens to them.

We live in a messed up world. Research regardless of whether it's successful or not should be making researchers some of the most highly paid citizens of our society. Documenting how things don't work should be as valued as documenting how things do work.

Labtechs shouldn't be making the equivalent of Mc Donalds workers (even though Mc Donalds workers should also be paid more).

flexbox made things so much easier, but still hard. There are just too many rules to keep in your head about display and position and how they affect other attributes. And the box model... wow. margin, border, padding, content, but he attribute is box-sizing and it has border-box and content-box, but not the others.

IINM it was written by people who came from print media (just like HTML) and that stuck.

Mr Stroustrup can spin it however he likes, but 70% of CVEs are caused by memory errors in unsafe languages like C and C++. That isn't happening because the majority of their devs are idiots. The language is the problem.

Talking about "but there are tools" and "hold on a minute, there a ways to write safe C++" is missing. It's way too easy to write memory unsafe code in C++. The opposite is true of other languages and that's why they are being recommended (dare I say pushed) over C++. To write memory unsafe Rust for example, you really, really have to want to.

C++ is his baby, Of course he won't acknowledge it and it was entirely predictable he would blame the programmers. The language will be the equivalent of COBOL in a decade or two.

I think it's a bit crazy to create a paid service on top of a reverse engineered product that isn't static. Indivious, NewPipe and other youtube frontends aren't going to create a paid youtube frontend, because they know Google could kill that at any point. Google could dedicate a full team to making youtube frontends non-functional.

Apple has a much bigger incentive to derail iMessage alternatives because they know that dumb parents have taught their kids how to live in a closed ecosystem and be slaves to Apple. 87% of USAian teenagers use Apple, which means it's only a matter of time before Apple becomes the dominant player on the market. If you want to keep making fat stacks of cash, the best thing you can do is control the market, which means killing of competition.

The only reason Apple would ever stop killing competitors is if it became legally and financially detrimental to do so. They'd have to reach Microsoft levels of antitrust and bad press before even considering backpedaling.

Everyone buying their products is helping Apple along to their goal of market dominance.

I think anything "musk did/said ABC" should be banned. Reading news about SpaceX or whatever else Musk owns that's technology related is fine IMO, but the constant "Musk this" and "Musk that" just makes me downvote or at "worst" unsub.

Regarding Twitter, if lemmy had filters, I'd block all of that too. However I can see that it has some influence on people and would be fine treating it as an exception to the muskysphere as long as it doesn't contain "Musk" in the title.

My 2 cents. Thank you for considering the ban 🙏
