This is total bullshit. All of it.

The almond growing industry in California uses 1.5-1.8 trillion gallons of water annually.

Even if you take the water use figures from the article at face value (17 billion gallons), almonds still use up vastly more water than all AI data centers combined.

The truth is that almonds need a fuckton of water! Waaaay TF more than any other crop and more than most industries.

There's another reason why it's bullshit: The figures cited include the water used by power plants themselves for cooling. That water is taken from the cooling ponds next to the power plant. It's not potable water and it was part of the plant's design.

Talking about water use when it comes to AI is stupid and distracts from the real problem which is power use! Stop talking about the water already! It's just going to discredit you when talking about the (real) problems with AI.

I have a conspiracy theory that the AI companies themselves are promoting these water usage articles because it discredits anyone who speaks out against AI data centers.

This assumes that birth tourism—if it even exists in any non-trivial amount of babies—is a problem. Why would it be a problem? I don't get it.

I just upgraded my phone two months ago and now two of the four cameras (which is the same number as my old phone that I bought four years ago) have something like 20% more pixels!

Also—now that I have the latest chip—I can talk to my phone in like three more languages. I don't speak any of them, but... Innovation!

My new phone is also significantly heavier than the old one and the battery life is like 10% better than my old phone when it was new! Also, my display has a few extra lines of resolution on the top and bottom!
