The detail is amazing, there are other sites that show the Topo50 maps, but you can't zoom in half as far as you can with your site.

Yeah, I've been there a few times myself. It looks like some major work is being done on the building though, which is good to see.

Quite a fascinating story, and I was absolutely amazed he was found alive.

Something the article doesn't mention though, is the only way he could have been lost for so long is to not have a map and compass, GPS, or means of communication with him. Part of the reason I wasn't expecting this to have a happy ending is it never really occurred to me that someone going into the bush alone wouldn't have a PLB.

I usually ride through Aro valley, but I've done a circuit of Mt Vic a few times.

Most of the MTB tracks are new tracks, so I'm not sure what everyone is moaning about.

I suspect his identity was well known, or at least suspected, in the right circles.

Also, tramping attracts some absolute nutters, I've met a few over the years.

No, they were profitable before the buyout. It's why Warehouse Group bought them for tens of millions, and sold them for a dollar.

They were a great store, very sharp pricing and quality gear.

I heard a tree come down on the ridgeline at the southern end of Mt Vic on Monday evening, I also saw the tree in the photo, which happened on Fergusson drive.

It's been interesting driving a van in these conditions.

It's amazing to me that we've come full circle, back to Torpedo7 being an online only retailer once more, or soon to be at least.

I'm not sure how the warehouse group managed to balls that up so badly, they just didn't offer good value at all as a retail store.

I've still got a Torpedo7 branded tent from back in the day when they had like two stores.

I think the most likely outcome of this is traffic chaos as everyone decides they'd rather park on the road than pay central city parking rates in the middle of nowhere.

Seriously, $5 an hour is absurd.

Yes, you cannot obstruct passage. Although I'm not sure if the road itself is considered private.

I actually cycled this route a few weeks ago, I can see why people are upset. There has been a large number of vehicles come through that have absolutely chewed up the ground, in places there are multiple pathways formed as one has become impassable.

Maintaining vehicle and cycling access, as well as marking out where the road actually is, is the best outcome in my view.

Me and two others completed this trip today, with slightly rougher conditions than I anticipated, but nonetheless a successful trip.

One of the cool things about this paddle is it's just under 20km on the water, but only two km to get back to the start point to retrieve your vehicle

Helicopters can autorotate, meaning fly without power, and the Jetranger from my understanding has quite good autorotation characteristics.

If this was simply a power failure, they should have been able to land just fine.

I'd love to know what actually went wrong here, and what products they were using.

It's remarkably easy to get smoke and flames when you screw up mixing resin, entire buildings have been lost due to mistakes like that.

There's a large number of invasive species in NZ that could have been eradicated, had decisive action been taken early on to remove the infestation, including a number of marine plants, so I'm glad to hear in this case we are making the effort and trying to eliminate this pest outright.
