Years ago (early 90s) my mother had a female friend. The friend had an uncle "Tony" no idea if a real uncle or just friend of family.

My mother's friend also had a sister who was engaged. One night sister and fiance got into a fight and it hit violent. Sister ended up in hospital for a week, several broken bones and multiple injuries. Somehow, "Tony" found out. The next morning the boyfriend woke up and left the house for work. He never showed up to work. He never was seen or heard of again. Maybe he's buried, maybe he's in the walls of a building or under the pavement of a road. I have no idea, but sister got a beating and when "Tony" found out he ensured the guy would beat anyone else ever.

Thought of another instance, even less details on this. Coworker was from Trinidad. One day he didn't show up, ok cool everyone takes time off. Next day he is also not at work, I ask manager and told "he had a family emergency". I think it was a week later he returned and I was curious and talked with him. He told me he had relatives in Trinidad and one started a new job at a port basically checking to make sure fees were paid and paperwork was filled out. There was a boat with a shipping container that was not documented and was not labeled. He opened container, supposedly top to bottom, front to back was white powder. I assume coke but could be anything. He closed the container and kept silent to not cause issues with the gangs. He went home, told family what he saw over dinner, then went to bar for a drink. Next morning he wasn't in his bed. He wasn't in the home. He told someone what he saw and that was a mistake. The ship was docked and allowed to leave. Maybe corruption, maybe not... Don't know, don't want to know.

I was in the corporate medical industry. The only things that got handled at all in a efficient time was those required by law. Like if there was a incident in the field we had to have an initial report within a week and a corrective action within 30 days. Preventive actions were longer term, didn't have a deadline so it was not uncommon for it to go on for a year or more.

I can't give a real example for legal reason but let's a product was sold which gave electrical shocks to a patient. Within a week we had to tell the fda the cause was a faulty resistor. Within 30 days we had to correct our system, for example assign a person to test that resistor with a dmm on every device. Easy enough, give the operator who installs the resistor a dmm, update the instructions to say to measure that resistor and give a 5 minute training to said operator telling them that they have to measure it. Easy to do in 30 days and required. Now really the root cause was we didn't test for that in our multiple automated tests. The preventive solution would be update the automated testing software to check that. That has no time limit. It now becomes low priority. We did have to give an estimated time line, say within 2 years. By the time that deadline approaches most people who originally said that have left the company and new people are unaware. They submit an extension, and it's low priority again. Another 2 years go by. Now the high priority is the next product release. The old product will be discontinued so no one cares. So for 4 years and possibly several more years after it the company pays a person to manually measure a resistor. The automated test would eliminate this need, be more reliable, have documented results but wasn't implemented because it's low priority since there's no legally obligated time line.

Agreed, sorta. The one caveat is that people hiring are typically hr, not technical people. In large companies they are there to fill out paperwork and limit company legal liability. They don't need to know the difference between a unsigned char and a long variable in c.

The people is charge should have hired better people to have those roles. Also whoever wrote those requirements messed up. I learned a long time ago there are basically 2paths forward professionally, technical and management. issues arise when then the needs of those two mix and the person doing so is not up to the challenge.

People can design a 120 to 12 volt power supply on graph paper. Others can talk to 5 stake holders on a new product about what color the plastic container should be and have 1 answer and everyone happy that they won at the end. Both skill sets are valuable. The main issue is we, society, put so much value on the second group and severely limited the potential of the first.

So many job applications suck...i tried to fill out one with a required "social media link" but didn't have any place to enter one. It had "LinkedIn url" and the next line was a text box, it had "github url" and the next line was a text box, it had "social media link" and the next line was just a submit button... There was literally no box to enter a social media url. I tried chrome, Firefox and Vivaldi because the job seemed good with good pay but literally impossible to apply to.

Nevermind I don't know why you need LinkedIn, github, and social media links to evaluate me as an employee but atleast give me a way to enter the data you want.
