Im quite surprised by this, isn't Parliament a crown/british concept? And Te Pati Maori are usually quite opposed to Crown concepts.

Regardless, I think as much hate as ACT gets for this - it seems obvious that clarity on the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi is required so that every New Zealander knows where they stand (legally speaking) and we can move on as a country.

The different interpretations from different groups are distracting from the real issues because the solution gets muddied.

Should we establish group-specific organisations that all do the same thing, just for different segments of society - or should we pour our energy and resources into making organisations work for all New Zealanders?

A Ministry of Education official has admitted the alternative model for the government's free school lunch programme is unlikely to be as nutritious as the previous programme, RNZ understands.

The comments came in a webinar hui between the Ministry of Education and intermediate and high school principals, earlier this month.

Principal Sheree Garton, from Levin Intermediate School, asked a question about protein and carbohydrates required in the new meals - and was told the meals would not have the same nutrition standards and would be very unlikely to meet the same nutritional quality as the previous meals because of the cost - though nutrition would be a factor in looking for a new major supplier.

Budget Day 'carkoi' protests delayed traffic on Auckland and Tauranga motorways ahead of a hikoi on Parliament.

Protesters earlier took the roads to oppose government policies toward Māori, 'activating' for today's National Māori Action Day - and caused traffic delays around the country.

It's the second time Māori have mobilised on a national scale with the first hīkoi taking place last December.

The national protest coincides with today's budget announcements.

Major loyalty scheme FlyBuys will come to an end later this year.

The scheme allows customers to redeem points for items in its loyalty shop, get petrol discounts and convert their points into New World Dollars.

The programme, has been running since 1996 and has about 1.8 million active Flybuys members.

"The landscape for loyalty programmes has changed, and continues to change rapidly, with businesses now having greater access to technology and capabilities that enable them to create their own highly tailored proprietary loyalty programmes. The Flybuys model of a services and retailer alliance has run its course, so will close at the end of this year," Ryley said.

Flybuys members would be able to earn points up until 11.59pm on 31 October and would have until 11.59pm on 31 December 2024 to redeem them.

Fewer babies and migration that "fell off a cliff" during Covid-19 have contributed to slower population growth in New Zealand, the first Census results released today reveal.

The Census, conducted in early 2023, placed New Zealand's official population just shy of 5 million, at 4,999,923.

Nearly a million people (one in five) are of Māori descent.

The total number is slightly lower than estimates of 5.34 million, because it does not include people out of New Zealand during the Census, those who did not complete the Census, and those who have been born or moved to New Zealand since.

Overall, New Zealand's population has grown by about 295,000 since 2018.

The Reserve Bank says that from 1 July, banks will only be able to lend about 20 percent of their new lending to owner-occupier borrowers with a debt-to-income ratio of more than six. That means, if your household earns a combined $100,000, your loan will be limited to $600,000.

Banks will only be able to lend 20 percent of lending to investors with a DTI of more than seven.

The rules won't apply to Kainga Ora loans, new builds or refinances.

At the same time, the bank will loosen the loan-to-value ratio (LVR) restrictions so that banks can lend 20 percent of their lending to owner-occupiers with deposits of less than 20 percent, from 15 percent at the moment, and 5 percent of lending can be done to property investors with equity or deposits of less than 30 percent, compared to 35 percent at present,

Last weeks thread here

Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

Lemmy.nz Community Census (survey.lemmy.nz)
submitted 6 months ago by Dave to c/newzealand

Hi all!

TL;DR: If you're reading this, please fill in the Lemmy.nz Census survey.

I have indicated in the past that I would like to do an instance census in the same manner as Lemmy.ca does. You can see the results of their survey here.

I have used similar questions and answers for much of the survey as I think it would be good to be able to compare between the instances. I have also made some changes based on their comments in the post, and have added other questions.

None of the questions are mandatory, so just answer what you are comfortable answering. I expect to leave this open for a while and have some reminders to make sure we get as many responses as possible. I'll do a results post once the results are in and I have had a chance to analyse them.

I am hoping to do this on an annual basis, with some tweaks but largely keeping it the same to allow for watching the trends.

Thanks for your participation!

New Zealand is experiencing its highest peak in Covid-19 cases since December 2022, professor Michael Baker says.

Last week, the ministry reported 6146 new cases of the virus and 19 further deaths.

That was a substantial increase on the number of cases reported the previous week - which stood at 3922.

The data came from wastewater testing, Baker said, but hospitalisations were also up.

"We're up to about 35 people a day going to hospital with this infection," he said.

From 30 May, New Zealand's four major banks - ANZ, ASB, BNZ and Westpac - must offer the secure payment service - although some already have it in place.

It allows customers to give a third party (such as an online retailer) permission to connect to their banking information, meaning there is no need to enter credit or debit card details to make a purchase.

Open banking can be used both on retailers' websites and on their mobile app, if they have one

The Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) is our blueprint for the Wellington Region's transport network. It aims to enable a connected region, with safe, accessible, and livable places.

The plan sets out targets and identifies regional priorities. It also sets out the transport activities we intend to invest in.

Alternate frontends (self.support)

I've been neck deep in Lemmy stuff recently and realised we don't have a post that explains the different frontend options that are available on Lemmy.nz.

If you don't like the Lemmy.nz website, you can test out one of the other website versions to see if one is to your liking (or use a Lemmy app, of which there are now many).

The default website is called lemmy-ui, and is accessed at lemmy.nz.

In addition, we have the following alternate websites. You use the same login details, it's the same site, it's a bit like using a different app to connect.

I don't actively monitor these, but they do have automatic updates. If one isn't working, please let me know!

If you have any questions, feel free to reply here.

NextSpaceflight:

The PREFIRE (Polar Radiant Energy in the Far-InfraRed Experiment) mission will send two CubeSats into space to study how much heat the planet absorbs and emits from its polar regions, including the Arctic and Antarctica.

Analysis of PREFIRE measurements will inform climate and ice models, providing better projections of how a warming world will affect sea ice loss, ice sheet melt, and sea level rise. Improving climate models can ultimately help to provide more accurate projections on the impacts of storm severity and frequency, as well as coastal erosion and flooding.

The Auckland Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) outlines what transport projects will get funded over the next 10 years. It is a joint plan between Auckland Transport, KiwiRail, and the NZ Transport Agency. Consultation is now open until the 17th of June.

This time around, there is a disconnect between the aspirations of the city and central government’s signalled priorities. There is not enough money set aside nationally for public transport services or infrastructure to keep things running as they are, let alone to start on new projects.

If you want your voice heard now’s the time to provide feedback on what you think the priorities should be.
