Welcome to today's daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there's no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it's just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how's it going?

Petition "to create a dedicated, and protected connection for people to cycle along the waterfront quays - from Oriental Parade to Whitmore Street."

The weather's not looking great for tomorrow, so if suck with kids and looking for something to do this could be a decent morning / afternoon activity. I took my 4 year old today and he absolutely loved it.

The official website is a bit light on info but ticket prices are (not including obligatory Lego set tax):

  • adult $10
  • child (3-17) $7
  • under 3's free

Open from 9 - 4 Sunday.

The Green Party has announced that it wants to increase annual leave to five weeks.

Co-leader Marama Davidson told a crowd at a E Tū election launch in Māngere today that it would provide organisations with plenty of notice and ensure the full five weeks is available for everyone by the end of 2025.

This wouldn't make NZ an unusual outlier globally, though perhaps it would be in this hemisphere - and that could be an attractive aspect as we continue to lose talent to Australia.

I'd like to see them carve out an exception for businesses that opt for a 32-hour 4-day week - either one works towards a better work-life balance and a 4-day week is a lot more personal days than just one week extra. Providing an exception for 4-day week businesses would avoid slowing uptake of the 4-day model for businesses that can make it work. The question is, how to balance the exception and leave changes for non-full-time employees?

Can NZ afford it? How many businesses are too fragile from the recent years of challenging operation. I suspect many can afford this, and that some have been pocketing the rewards of improved revenues in this inflationary environment without readily passing on those rewards. There could be more businesses struggling than we'd hope, that are too fragile from the challenges of recent years to wear the new costs.

Then again, maybe some negative impact is worthwhile for the improvement to the portion of the workforce that lacks the negotiating position to get such a deal - some executives and upper management certainly do enjoy such arrangements, including reduced days on massive salaries.

As an employee I like it.

A whole bunch of this sounds really familiar for some reason...

Some kinda hilarious quotes from the owner here.

I'm not even sure what they're doing. I believe they're protesting against light rail or something."

Gazley said the dealership supported sustainable transport options.

"Maybe they should inspect some of the vehicles that we have, because the majority of them are hybrid and electric vehicles."

And then...

"And then I believe they tried to glue their hands to the footpath, but the glue didn't set in time and they were arrested by the police."

Maybe they'll go after a Tesla dealership next?

When the details of this policy were released, it really didn't pass the sniff test. It seemed to rely on a huge increase in foreign buyers, above pre-ban levels, and ignored any potential reduction in sales due to the tax itself.

Open to suggestions on title. App wouldn't provide

What do we think of this ?

I'd say considering we produce for 40 million (at last count) This is objectively false. We produce for profit. Simple as that. We the population subsidize these corporations to use the land as they please. We then get left with what's left over.

Give us the means and we can produce for ourselves. Not hard to grow zucchini. Literally throw seeds in some ground and they sprout up.

Need land and resources and can stop relying on supermarkets.

Obviously plenty of caveats on that way of thinking. However current system isn't fit for purpose. Several individuals get obscenely wealthy while we create health inequalities. Governments are meant to be for the people. Currently that is not the case

I decided I would actually take a scroll through hexbear to see how their LGBT community was getting on, since that seems to be the largest and the LGBT communities I have access to are sadly lacking in activity.

I checked out their main page and read a few posts. There's just something that irks me about people glorifying Mao who was numerically worse than Hitler.

@Dave@lemmy.nz you made the right choice.

Looks like following Countdown pulling out, AA SmartFuel is shutting down.

I also got an email from Countdown:

Everyday Rewards is coming 1 February 2024

We are launching a new loyalty programme early next year that will replace Onecard and we’re proud to announce bp as our foundation partner.

Sounds like without BP and Contdown, AA SmartFuel aren't able to continue.

Mentions the recent discussion of rising sick days, but this time with a bit more context!

In New Zealand, abortion was legal, but there was a shortage of doctors. Rapkin was going to help lead a training program in the country’s capital, much like the one she’d built here, but with less red tape. This time, she would be paid by the government for her work, not singled out for it.

When I browse Reddit I always open it in a private window, because that website is cancer and I like to keep it contained. I have no interest in revisiting ironic "shit posts" or run-of-the-mill opinions from Reddit-dwelling incels. I was writing about Reddit on another website, commenting on the perverted mindset of basement dwelling degenerates on Reddit:

"Redditors are all ******. They talk about circle-jerks, hate-boners, and ass-holes. They are obsessed with erect penises and anuses. Truly warped people."

reply:

reddit causes brain damage. (I can list them if interested) And as a result all nz reddit users that don't get censored are extreme leftwing, porn addicted, losers. Angry and bitter but determined to ruin once new zealand.

I didn't even mention pornography yet someone made the connection between Reddit users and pornography 😆 There are probably Reddit communities based around VR porn and there's probably a whole community with thousands of active members, just to talk about what to do when a matchbox car gets parked where the sun don't shine. And how to find an "open minded" doctor. Just normal heterosexual stuff you do with the normal wife, you know?

I'm trying not to complain about Reddit too hard, in all honesty, it's pretty funny how screwed in the head people on Reddit are. I sometimes visit just to see what dumb opinions people have. Last time I checked /r/chch someone posted about Kyle Chapman's arrest, and someone in the comments wrote that Kyle is an "angry incel" which is ironic because that's the perfect description of these redditors. A bunch of craft beer, soy latte drinking, porn addicted virgins who will never get a woman pregnant. On the other hand, Kyle has 5 children (presumably to at least 3 different women) which is sick too, but still better than a lot of these redditors.

Kyle is a run-of-the-mill boomer as far as I'm concerned. Reddit says he's a fascist but I don't think Kyle has cared about politics or ideology for at least 12 years. Of course, on Reddit you get upvotes if you say that Christchurch is a Nazi city with a big "nationalist community". I saw someone farming karma just 2 days ago.

The same 'redditors' believe that The Rob Gray Life Centre is some kind of secret fascist training centre. But if you go to (I think) the Barbadoes Steet intersection with Cashel, then walk east down Cashel, you'll see the sign outside which says "Rob Gray Life Centre open today - everyone welcome".

It's not just the invisible fascist boogey-man that Reddit obsesses over, it's also the secret Christian nationalists in Parliament. Apparently Christopher Luxon is a secret Christian nationalist who wants to bring in extreme religious laws, or something.

If I go on reddit and disagree with the secret Christian (or fascist) threat, then it's guaranteed that the mods have a secret porn group on Discord where they hashtag my username and make secret notes about me, that I'm stirring up trouble, and causing offence (by disagreeing and providing information which contradicts the hive mind)

I have a problem with Reddit, because it's bastion of weirdos where they are not exposed to anyone with different view points, and it's been an echo-chamber for years now. There's much talk about the 'danger' of X and what Musk has done to it, but it seems like his WEF adviser has come out against anti-semitism, and Musk is going to met Benjamin Netanyahu. I really doubt that Elon truly supports free speech. He's a tricky guy who will change his mind on things and toy with the media and public figures. The scrutiny should be on Reddit. I think even if there was a child porn scandal involving /r/newzealand moderators, it probably wouldn't cause an exodus of users. If a Reddit moderator was caught with thousands of images of naked 6 year old girls on their hard drive, the /r/newzealand community would probably raise money to defend them in court. I believe it's that cohesive, basically like a cult where the moderators are highly venerated figures.
