I guess you have zero idea of the 38th Parallel where the Soviets and Americans split the country in two both claiming a portion to themselves and installed their own governments.
There wasn't a North and South simply just Korea up until the 38th Parallel after WW2.
What you are talking about with the North invading the South was the North's attempt to reunite the country under one banner after being split by the US. They failed primarily because the Soviet Union lost the cold war and the US won. All of these conflicts between the North and South are the results of the US which was my point.
