I'm surprised they would include that

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip -1 points 6 days ago (4 children)

It's not something people often include. It's more work too for no (?) benefit from the game studio's point of view

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

There's massive benefit to representing women accurately in media.

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Does a game studio in this case actually care about that? I'd just expect them to want to make most money with least effort. That's why I'm surprised

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

....they did? They made the game this way. This game is already out.

I think it's kinda funny that you're surprised they would be inclusive. I'd bet there are quite a few women on the dev team and there are quite a few women who play these games.

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I'm always surprised if a big corporation cares about anything other than making money tbh

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Why do you think that appealing to women and broadening their customer base would not make them money?

Has everyone forgotten that women play games, too?

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I guess this is the sort of low effort thing they'd do, so you got me there

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I thought y'all were just complaining that it was too much effort to put in this detail?

Now it's low effort to be inclusive to women?

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I'm not sure you're grouping me with with that "ya'll", I thought it was effort with no benefit (money) to them so I didn't understand it.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It seemed that you thought adding this level of realism wasn't worth the additional effort, but when I pointed out that there are people who appreciate it, you called it low effort.

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Low effort is still effort? I didn't think it was worth the effort, low as it might be

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Clearly it was worth the effort with how many copies were sold.

Aside from that, personally, I think it's always worth the effort to be inclusive when we can.

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

How can you tell what sort of effect this had to the sales? It was a popular franchise already from what I can remember, so you'd expect a lot of copies sold. But how this sort of detail affected it, would be really interesting to know. If they did/do it in later games it probably didn't at least hurt them

Aside from that, personally, I think it’s always worth the effort to be inclusive when we can.

Corporation don't really have proper values like that imo

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It didn’t affect it enough to slump sales and impact their profits significantly. They still made a shit ton from the game.

I get that corporations don’t care about anything but money, but the people who work on these projects obviously care. And I think it should be upheld and celebrated so that corporations are more inclined to be inclusive this way.

Women make up a large portion of the gaming community despite what gamergate style gamers claim.

It didn’t affect it enough to slump sales and impact their profits significantly

I just wonder if the overall effect was positive (for income) since that way they'll keep doing it. Otherwise they'll axe it

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Do you think sex scenes in games should be a thing

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 1 points 6 days ago

They do have them in some games

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

Movie studios keep making movies that flop.

The new God of War is forging ahead despite the incel’s tears about the protagonist being a woman.

I think this kind of representation will be around for a while. Again, women make up a very large portion of gamers now.

It's a game about robot dinosaurs. I don't think they're making their money on realism, exactly haha. But someone else mentioned how it could broaden the player base and that makes sense

[–] guy@piefed.social 6 points 6 days ago

Well, realistic bodies :) like how facial features during speech for example was the focus just a couple of years ago

[–] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

If you mean financial benefit, yeah, I can see your point.

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

That's what I mean. I feel like that's all these big corporations care about

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Women play games. And men who appreciate attention to detail play games.

The only people who might be turned away from buying this game because of this particular detail are incels. And why should a game studio cater to them?

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Incels are a big player base. But they've probably done the math on which one benefits them more

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Considering the game sold 8.4 million copies by April 2023, I don't think the incel community is as big of a player base as you think.

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I'm guessing that's a lot of sales but I'm not sure how to measure this sort of detail's effect on the sales. Would be super interesting to know how much stuff like this moves the needle

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Even if it doesn't move the needle much, inclusivity and portraying women accurately in media should be encouraged.

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

I was just talking from the game studio/distributor pov. If it is more profitable to be inclusive than not then that's win-win of course

The studio probably doesn't set out with an exact artistic vision, and then arrive there as quickly as possible. Much more likely they decided 15 (or whatever) artists is enough for this project, and they are paying them until the project is done. For the artists, that means if they've met the bare minimum, then chasing smaller and smaller things to keep busy... Keeps them busy.

Likewise, the studio is (hopefully) still within their estimate for the art budget, so there's no one breathing down their neck about cutting costs there. It's not worth it to fire people just because the work is done, especially if they might need that capacity for something close to release.

Technically, the director (or someone) probably could tell them "That's everything for now. Doomscroll until we need you again", but that's not really best for anyone - so effort spent on meaningless detail wins.
