Would you like any help picking a distro?
Hannah Montana Linux, obviously.
Any criteria? If newbie, there is nothing wrong with Linux Mint. If experienced, still there is nothing wrong with Linux Mint.
Edit: Oh dang, you were offering help. Thanks, I'm good. Could be useful for anyone who seeks help though.
I encourage LMDE because it's not downstream from Ubuntu
Mint. I installed it and stuff just worked.
For gaming or regular use? I've tried both Bazzite and CachyOS on my gaming laptop. Even if I wasn't a tinkerer I would choose CachyOS any day for gaming. Mint over Ubuntu for regular use. My 2 cents
You can game just fine on any distribution.
Agree. Some are just better suited. I mean I use CachyOS for both gaming and regular use. I was thinking more "is this a workstation or gaming rig" sort of divide. CachyOS have kernel optimizations for gaming, but smarter men than me need to say if that actually has any major impact. And its bleeding edge so you're always 100% up to date, that can be both good and bad of course. For me it's good. The two-click setup to have everything installed and done for gaming doesn't hurt.
You certainly can and I have several distros, but Cachy seems to be well suited with gaming. I am very sure I could tweak Mint to be comparable, but out of the box Cachy is a better gamer. One or two clicks and it’s all set.
That's probably great, but I don't know what there is to set up. All I've ever had to do is install the packages for Steam and Heroic on OpenSuSE or Fedora. I suppose any other system is comparable.
It seems some distributions have issues with nVidia hardware (I never had trouble, although I'm running AMD for the first time in decades at the moment), maybe that's one thing those "gaming" distributions address. I don't really know.
I’d have to go parse through the script, though I’m certain someone else here already knows, but amongst other packages, proton, wine, steam and video drivers seem to be what it installs. I had to do all that manually on Mint and since it was my first Linux system I set up as a gamer I am sure I have some package versions set differently/incorrectly. Cachy takes the guesswork out of it.
I am olde and have been building gaming systems for many years. CachyOS is the easiest OS that I’ve ever set up. Am in a game playing within minutes. Even Windows was never so easy.
Actually for both. For gaming, both of Bazzite and Cachy is good. I mostly suggest Bazzite for newbies though if it's gaming related. Cachy is Arch and I don't suggest Arch to newbies.
Arch, obviously. What else would you choose?
I think OP would prefer Nix
Nah, Gentoo or Exherbo. Maybe LFS.
Actually, they seem like a fine Temple OS candidate
Varoom.
I'm kinda at the other side of the needle, I prefer Void myself.
I usually lose my stuff when i fall in to the void
At least falling into void provides some kind of serenity.
