America sided with the defense in both world wars and Korea. For much of the 20th Century America was the good guys who defended democracy in other countries. Then Nixon and neoliberalism turn America into what it is today. But the US was good.
Iran contra scandal anyone? Kidnapping the democratically elected Venezuelan president in 2025 anyone? Illegitimate Iraq war anyone? The list is almost endless
Those aren't twentieth century. Those are twenty first.

Wasn’t that speech essentially an expression of regret and admission that he did the wrong thing? That was always the impression I got anyway, and what gives his words even more weight.
Not really, in the same speech he doubled down on the need to rapidly increase the arms industry to combat the Soviets.
Eh..... Defense doesn't = good guys, especially when considering Korea. The government in South Korea was basically a war crimes machine being driven by an evil dictator.
So long as you ignore the entirety of the southern hemisphere. It's hard to claim they really cared about democracy when they overthrew several democracies in Africa and centra/south america just to install fascist dictators.

Incomparably worse at the time. The living standard, quality of life, and access to political representation was all much much better in North Korea before the war.
Before and during the war the South Korean government was responsible for the vast majority of all warcrimes. Starting with the Jeju island uprising, where the South killed anywhere from 40-80k of its own citizens after they organized a general strike. It was one of the main events that precipitated the north invading.
Around 2-3 million civilians were killed during the Korean war, over 80% were killed by the South Korean/American government.
You do realize that Native Americans didn’t have the right to vote until the 1970s right? Even in the 20th century America was not a bastion of democracy, and that’s glossing over the Trail of Tears and the whole slavery thing from the previous centuries…

America entered late in both world wars and in both cases only entered to protect US capitalists’ interests. D Day literally only happened because capitalists wanted to occupy Western Europe before the Soviets could liberate everyone.
In Korea, the US worked to prevent the communists from liberating their country from the hyper capitalists who were oppressing their country. Revolutions don’t happen unless things are very bad, and the US stepped in on the side of very bad.
Korean intervention was to overturn democracy. WW2 European intervention was only to prevent USSR full takeover of Germany. Domino theory is not about proving that nazi scarcity oligarchist economics are the best, but to diminish any country that might want to escape nazi colonialism.
What do you mean, "overturn democracy"? South Korea was under authoritarian regime when it was invaded by North Korea + USSR.
South Korean parliamentary elections in 1950 results in 60% of seats for party wanting unification, and 12% for US puppet president's party. President blocked all mandates. Whether North proposals for nationwide elections or unification of parliaments with arrest of Rhee (puppet) were sincere, is deniable. North's attempt to liberate South eventually failed. North/Sung would eventually replace democracy with a Monarchy (Sung's decendants), and questioning his willingness to have taken a pragmatic distribution of power for unification goals is a reasonable western narrative.

The world doesn't work on such simple terms, and america is responsible for destabilizing much of central and south american democracies under the pretense of defending against communism since the end of WW2. The US was never good.

South Korea was a military junta at that time. Can you explain how you feel that is defending democracy?
Can you also explain how you feel the world wars were about democracy? Democratic levels on both sides of the wars were roughly even
