They could even lend you the money you need to pay for that training, how nice of them! Then, when you do start getting paid, they can take repayment (with interest) directly from your paycheck. How convenient!
They could also pay people in a form of crypto that's only accepted at the store in town that happens to be owned by the same people as your employer. Try trading that crypto for real cash, and you're fired.
They could even provide a place for your family to live, how nice! It's too bad if you found a cheap place to live elsewhere, it's in your contract now: gotta live in company housing if you want to work for the company. They'll take the rent right out of your paycheck too. How convenient.
Now if you even mention the word "union," in one fell swoop, they can't take your job, your home and your ability to buy food for yourself and your family.
None of this is new. People in West Virginia (and elsewhere, of course) gave their lives so that we could move on from this shit as a society.
Those people would be sickened by what their chickenshit state has become, but that's besides the point...
Most people don't know any history of labor. I barely know anything and I'm interested in the topic. It's frustrating. I mean, I can accept the ingnorance. That's natural. But the lack of curiosity is upsetting.
You're focusing on the wrong thing - lack of curiosity isn't a problem. In fact, humans are naturally curious, what you see here is something strategically impeding that curiosity. Indoctrination is a major thing, but there is also active suppression if a given individual is too "radical" to be indoctrinated.
Sure, but there has to be some agency on the part of people. Like, yes they're victims of propaganda and such, but I don't want a model where everyone is acted upon and never acts. My wealthy coworkers who just don't read books are who I'm thinking of. They have ample time and resources to learn more, but it's easier to just watch anime and play dota.
If you don't expect them to ever act, then nothing will change and we'll just be crushed by capitalism and friends forever.
And by act I don't even mean like go start a revolution, or a mutual aid group, or do anything dramatic. Just spend 20 minutes reading about history. Be curious. Overcome the quagmire of propaganda we're immersed in. Just for a little bit.
