It's a joke and I get it, but that period can be so taxing that moms fall asleep and then roll into their child, suffocating them. It's devastating. Yes, baby will want to be held but you can train them over time. Don't give up.
Unless they have colic, in which case just try to get everyone through that 9 months alive
Not true, where do you have your info from? Pretty much everyone I know including myself has co-slept with their babies. I've never heard of a single problem with that, not from them and not in the news. However, if it gets taxing to the point of passing out, have the dead and some aunties step in and let the mom take time off!
Edit: no, you should not let the dead care for your baby! Maybe ask the dad first.
I am sure that the risk of killing your child while co-sleeping is very low, but what parent would accept a small chance of committing negligent homicide against their baby?
Because a baby is a small mammal seeking the warmth and heartbeat of its caretaker. This is of utmost importance for its wellbeing and proper development. Taking that away to avoid a tiny chance of death? It's up to you. I chose the small risk. I chose many small risks throughout my kid's life because I believed taking them all away and coddling them from every danger would make for a very reduced learning experience and a lot less love and fun.
When I took a parenting class with my wife almost a decade ago, I remember it from there.

No idea why you get so heavily downvoted. We did the same, the midwife was also okay and we even did a first aid training for babies, where suffocation in bed was a topic, but that’s due to the blanked, not the parent.
I also just checked the statistics. Out of all suffocation deaths only 2.8% were because of someone else rolling over the baby. I believe most of the parents were intoxicated. So the real death rate by suffocation due to a parent rolling over them is super slim.
Someone posted a link from 2013, so some of this info is outdated. Some of it might be different approaches in different cultures and countries. And people just love being right, don't they, and they love getting angry when it's for the 'protection of children'. Especially when they think the opponent is a 'dirty hippie' following any kind of non-mainstream woo-woo ideas. I'm just sorry for their kids. A baby is a small mammal and their sense of safety directly derives from closeness with the caretaker. Babies who feel safe are more likely to turn into adults who feel safe.
True, I can see that with other parents on the playground, how they treat their kids. At the same time, I also got treated like that and I still turned out okay I believe. But my goals are definitely different, as I do everything for my kids, constantly consume books or even go yo in-person trainings/courses, just so that I can create a good environment for them and give them everything they need to be successful in life.
I agree. Unless we're drugged, we're far more aware of our surroundings when asleep than most people realize. It's very unlikely that an undrugged person would roll over onto a baby and suffocate it.

I believe in most Western countries these theories are outdated by now. Nobody criticized my cosleeping in the early 2000s, it was already debunked as a cause of SIDS. Maybe that's different in the US?
