Same reason Estonia and Lithuania and Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavian states are now flush with fascists.

The Shock Doctrine rapidly dismantled all the things about socialist states that people liked and injected a ton of right-wing resentment politics to divest the reformist replacement politicians of responsibility for the downturn. Bulgaria, in particular, is a real textbook case of rapid decline and resulting public insanity. But East Berlin is another classic example. People were impoverished in the wake of reunification. And the reason for that impoverishment was made plain in the now-western-owned media. Immigrants, corrupt socialist bureaucrats, and evil foreigners were all to blame.
