Same for me, but some of my French friends explained it to me in the last presidential election.
One problem is they can have two rounds. If no one candidate achieves 50% of the vote, there will be a second one in which you most likely then have to decide between far left and far right. So I guess a lot of moderate would not go to vote in a second round.
No, you usually get to chose between a fuckwad and extremists.
We've had nothing but fuckwad presidents for decades.
