I think i'm a different kind of tech bro. The foss/Linux kind of tech bro. Am I fucked?

[-] tutter@lemmy.blahaj.zone 40 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

youre allowed to call yourself a hacker instead of tech bro then

[-] daggermoon@piefed.world 13 points 6 days ago

What constitutes being a hacker?

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 23 points 6 days ago

Do you wear a hoodie and work in dark room?

Sadly then you're relegated to the "simple nerd" designator...please go stand in the corner, you're blocking the line.

This has to be one of the worst takes I've ever seen on Lemmy

[-] deliriousdreams@fedia.io 1 points 5 days ago

You could try a hooded cape and or robe. I think that might technically be allowed.

[-] subgenius@sh.itjust.works 10 points 5 days ago

Rollerblading between server racks

running

tr -dc '01' < /dev/urandom | fold -w $(tput cols)

or any related variation of pibing /dev/urandom funny places

[-] Zagorath@quokk.au 27 points 6 days ago

Nah, being a man who's into tech is a necessary but not sufficient condition to being a "tech bro". That term has a whole bunch more baggage and I think very few people on the threadiverse qualify.

[-] nkat2112@sh.itjust.works 22 points 6 days ago

What you described is the polar opposite of the work done for Palantir.

You're fine and noble. Just keep being you.

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 19 points 6 days ago

Thanks, I work for Omarchy /s

[-] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 22 points 6 days ago

Am I fucked?

You wish.

[-] lath@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago

You might get lucky if you wear knee socks.

[-] daggermoon@piefed.world 12 points 6 days ago

Will goth latinas be turned on by that?

[-] lath@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago

Can't speak for general tastes, but I'm sure there's a few directly into that.

[-] daggermoon@piefed.world 16 points 6 days ago
[-] lath@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago

Good fortune and fair winds! 🫡

[-] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 1 points 4 days ago

Only if you use Arch, make sure to mention you do.

[-] daggermoon@piefed.world 1 points 4 days ago
[-] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 2 points 4 days ago

Hmmm we might need to poll goth latinas. I use CachyOS btw, so I'd like to know.

[-] daggermoon@piefed.world 1 points 4 days ago

They got goth latinas in Australia?

[-] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 2 points 4 days ago

I'm Canadian, I just like Pylova more than local instances :)

Good point actually, made me curious. 1.6% of Canadians identify as Latina vs 0.5% of Australia. Pretty exotic if you can find one who is also goth.

[-] daggermoon@piefed.world 2 points 4 days ago

I hope you find one.

[-] Joelk111@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

Just gotta find a woman who pays for Google One and save her $ every month by hosting her files.

Bonus: she's locked into your ecosystem (don't do this)

[-] A1kmm@lemmy.amxl.com 3 points 5 days ago

Yep, and if you're a real techbro, you start off by making the offering great. But then, you gradually enshittify it. Popups start coming up that ask her to consent to things she doesn't really want forever, on unconscionable terms, but at first there is a 'Yes' or 'Not now' option. Behind the scenes, there are terms saying you can change the terms any time you like, and her only option is to leave within 14 days, and it is her responsibility to monitor the terms and stop using it if she doesn't agree. You start silently changing the terms to allow you to opt her in by default to consent to things she doesn't want. She opts out, so you change the terms again so she has no choice. All the while the service gets worse - but what's she going to do, she's locked in.

And that sort of thing is why working for companies known for doing the equivalent of the above but to the public is not going to get a good reaction.

[-] EnsignWashout@startrek.website 3 points 5 days ago

It's fair game after getting legally married, though.

[-] Gyrcas@piefed.zip 7 points 6 days ago

Nah that's the only good kind of tech bro, foss is the backbone of everything great about technology :3

[-] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 days ago

If you go back to the 70/80s, computer guys were really nerdy hippies trying to hack consciousness itself and build new ways of relating...

What happened to tech kinda parallels what happened to Christianity.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 0 points 6 days ago

We need a different term for the non-evil tech bros. That one's been tainted.

[-] _stranger_@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

We should call them tech assholes and keep bro positive.
