Haha. As a consultant, I worked on a crapton of IoT projects. Not a single one could explain WHY they needed all that data. If you're just storing user actions, it's not really useful, or actionable.

I made coffee at 8:03 am on Tuesday, did laundry at 2:39.873 pm on a Saturday, or opened the fridge door at 6pm and closed it at 6:02pm.

So what.

So what?

Well you drink coffee in the morning so it's probable that you go to the bathroom soon after.

Oh your did laundry on Saturday the weekend? I bet your don't do laundry during the week because work. Maybe you won't be home around then...

Opened the fridge door at 6:00 pm and it was open for 2 minutes? I bet the person is hungry. Quick flash their marketing ID with ads for fast food!

Stuff like that is what they use the info for.

If you wear a smart watch that monitors your heartrate. You bet your ass they know when you have sex and when you need more condoms.

Lmaooo. Those goofballs. As though I would ever use condoms…

[-] king_comrade@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

Ahh a fellow gambling man

Everything you said is true except the last part.

It's bad for the capitalistic companies to have less consumers. No condoms = more people = more consumers = more data = more $$$

The more info they have about you, the worse it gets.

And even if the company just uses your right to privacy just to make money through ads. You can be sure they will get hacked by people with even less morals.

They can use all that data to open a bank account on your name and commit tons of tax fraud.

Who do you think they will arrest? That is right, you.

And getting out of that will always cost you tons of time, effort and money. So good luck.

they can sell the data. that's what.

all those habits will be used to build a profile used to create a custom marketing ads for you.

What kind of fucking psychopath leaves the fridge open for 2 minutes?

[-] lastlybutfirstly@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

So.... How do we pronounce IoT? Is it I O T or eye-aught?

[-] Jackhammer_Joe@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

I O T

whoever says it different, is definitely a psychopath

[-] Soggy@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Rhyme with coyote.

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Until you're wanted for murder and your fridge habits prove your alibi and you're exonerated.

[-] President@sh.itjust.works 0 points 6 days ago

Be honest, that would get dismissed.

But if it proved you were are the crime scene however....

What about people who are doing other things?

  • I’m getting dressed and would like notification when the coffee is ready
  • I’m out doing yard work, but want to be notified when the laundry is done so I can feed the next load

While I could do one thing at a time, or use a clock or at a timer, getting the notification makes it stress free

Think of it as equivalent to the dryer buzzer. It used to notify us when the laundry was done so we can start the next load, but apparently we need a more complicated way to do that

[-] fubarx@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

You can get all that locally without having everything hoovered to the cloud.

The point is some of the functionality is useful and desirable, even if manufacturers make poor choices in implementation

What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.
