Next up: Quebec separatists.

[-] Godort@lemmy.ca 11 points 4 days ago

This would only happen if the Americans spoke French. And proper Québécois French, not Parisian French.

I learned classical Spanish, not the pidgin dialect he seems to have picked up

Oh, I didn’t say they’d get anywhere.

I'd say that Quebec separatists are a slightly different ball of wax. That movement started before Canada or the US were even countries.

[-] adespoton@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 days ago

Yes; the difference is they just won an election.

[-] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago

28% of the vote. Hardly a resounding separatist vote.

The party that win Quebec's election is a separatist party but they said they won't push for it for as long as the Trump problem exists.

I feel that if an American representative tried to talk to them they'd tell them to "manger de la marde"

The US will exist after Trump. Unless Quebec plans to join France then separating won't happen.

[-] Jax@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

I could see it if the U.S. balkanizes

[-] codydodd@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

Quebec historically hated France more than the English who conquered them in part because continental france has always looked down upon their American colonies and sold them for cheap for sugar islands. Quebec became an entirely separate nation from france at that point

I think you're missing the why.

It's about military strength.

[-] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

Listen to Chantal before you worry about anything.

Tl;dr - completely different grievances. America doesn't want them. They don't give a shit what America thinks. Highly unlikely any referendum will happen.

[-] adespoton@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

America didn’t want Alberta either. That didn’t stop them from trying to destabilize Canada.

And it won’t stop them from trying again with Quebec. They’ll have even less success, but they’ll still try.

[-] realworldschlitz@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

They tried that before way back in the 90s. It didn’t fly.

[-] adespoton@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

It won’t this time either.

And yet, Brexit happened.
