Fine? Sure. But the proper setting, especially on a higher end rice cooker, will result in better rice.

[-] Juniper@piefed.zip 20 points 1 week ago

I had to put all my stuff in storage then move across the country recently. I did not bring my cuckoo rice cooker with me, and damn I didn't realize how spoilled I've gotten. The rice I'm cooking in a cheap one just isn't as good. I think it is over-cooking the rice, but it's actually hard to dial in

[-] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

this reminds me of how my friend recently used our entire allotment of coffee grounds to dial in the coffee maker at the place we were staying

ten probably hungover people the morning after a wedding, and this guy used all the grounds to ~~make~~ end up with 2/3 of a pot of coffee, then dipped before anyone else but me woke up

love the guy, but that was not what I wanted to enter the kitchen to see

[-] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 week ago

Wait, what do you mean "dial in"? I'm unfamiliar with this term in the context of coffee makers. Do they need to be calibrated?

Like, did he make a batch, taste it, say "too weak," toss it, then make another, taste, "too strong," toss, and so on until he gets one that's "just right"?

If so, what an asshole.

Or did he just dump an entire can of grounds in the hopper, brew a 2/3 pot, then dump the resulting motor oil in a travel mug before dipping out?

If so, still, what an ass.

[-] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago

the first is exactly what he did lmao

I brought enough coffee for like half a dozen pots

[-] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 week ago

Not only is that selfish, it's also kinda stupid.

Like did he really need to pour it out because it didn't suit him? If anything he could have moved it to a different container so that other people could still have some.

But also it's like... if you don't know the right ratio it's not hard to ask. If there's a scooper it's usually like one scoop per two cups of water. Getting the precision down to ยฑ three decimal places isn't exactly necessary.

But whatever. I digress...

Yes, we are the monolith known as coffee people and we have no variation of personal opinion, methodology, or taste ๐Ÿ™„

[-] boobookittyfrick@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Ah yes and then the next bag is at a different level of roast and freshness and must be re-dialed in again

[-] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 6 points 1 week ago

I've heard great things about the Cuckoos, my little Zojirushi is perfect though.

[-] perishthethought@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago

Oooh damn, I thought cuckoo was an adjective but it's a brand name.

Damn you people are wealthy or just really really love your rice.

[-] doodeux@scribe.disroot.org 5 points 1 week ago

I bought my Zorirushi at Goodwill for $7.99.

And yes, I love my rice.

[-] AmyAye@nord.pub 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah, check Goodwills and estate sales. Old people like buying expensive nice shit, so you can pay pennies on the dollar for good stuff at Estate Sales.

[-] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 4 points 1 week ago

Spend a couple hundred dollars once and never have to buy a rice cooker again, and have perfect rice every time. The total cost of my machine up to now is probably a couple pennies per batch of rice made (if that). They can also do more than just rice, I regularly steam veggies and even cook meat while my rice cooks.

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Some things are worth splurging on. Having said that, $500+ for a rice cooker is just too much. ๐Ÿ˜…

[-] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 2 points 6 days ago

It always comes down to boot theory.

[-] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

I'm of the opinion that if you have to cook your rice in a $600 machine, you like your machine more than you like rice

[-] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 2 points 6 days ago

I can like both equally. My Zojirushi sings a lovely little song when it finishes cooking the rice, how could not love it.

[-] perishthethought@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

What about a $200 machine? I see both Cuckoo and Zojirushi offers those too. I think I'm going to see what my local Hmart has the next time I go in there.

[-] rbos@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

An instant pot does perfectly good rice too. Though it takes a bit of trial to get then ratios right.

[-] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 1 points 6 days ago

That's the advantage of high quality rice cookers, they can adapt if you get the ratios wrong. I've definitely been too drunk and added an extra 1/4 cup of water, but it does its best and still turns out okay.

[-] rbos@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 days ago

Yeah, I get that. Shelf space is very limited though. :/

[-] kkj@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 week ago

And I recognize that Zojirushi pot, so it definitely can make good rice.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

I own a rice cooker. I admit that it makes better rice more consistently. But I still use a pot on the stove most of the time because I can get it done quicker, but at the expense of it sometimes being mushy.

[-] HellieSkellie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago
[-] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 3 points 6 days ago

If you put in less water than the rice needs, it will result in a chewier texture, like undercooked pasta. Too much water, and it will cook down too much, become gluey and mushy. Perfectly cooked rice is incredible, and I didn't realize how good plain rice could be til I was an adult and had it prepared correctly.

[-] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 5 points 1 week ago

It's like coffee. There are troglodytes out there who will tell you instant is just as good as anything else.

[-] Meatwagon@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 days ago

I learned that if you make freshly ground coffee in an aeropress you can actually enjoy just drinking it black without feeling line you're eating charcoal. I couldn't fathom how people could drink it black before.
