Reddit is moving to “a logged-in-only experience,” CEO says
(arstechnica.com)
This is a most excellent place for technology news and articles.
Be the change you want to see. Post interesting stuff you find to share with the fediverse. Comment when you have an opinion. It really helps.
I wonder if they targeted users they couldn't tie back to real identities. I never used an account tied to a real identity or a real email address and all of my accounts were banned for pretty innocuous or specious reasons.
One was banned for advocating violence against women, because I called Kaitlyn Jenner an attention whore. One was banned for saying Luigi is a hero. Of course all attempts at appeals were ignored.
You'd probably be more comfortable over on Twitter or Truth social then. Casual homophobia doesn't go over well around here.
Alright then. Fortunately, unlike on reddit, blocking here actually treats an account as if it no longer exists. So that's enough of you for one lifetime. 👋
I was reading their earlier comments trying to figure out why they were removed, and then got deeper into the thread. Jeez. Then they wonder why they get banned everywhere. They really came into the place we called home and decided they were going to be an ass to all of us? Then are surprised when they get banned?
The mods and admins won't look kindly on that, just to give you a fair warning.
Homophobia is not something that is tolerated well here.
What's the point of coming into a community to spread hate on purpose?
Again, the Fediverse is still rather small, we all kinda know each other here. You won't find a warm welcome this way.
Yikes.
Those are the exact type of Redditors that I would prefer stay far the fuck away from the Fediverse.
This attitude sucks.
If your hill to die on is calling other people gay, maybe this isn't the place for you. That's all I was saying.
We've got a pretty large LGBTQ+ user base here. Homophobia isn't funny no matter how rational and logical your other topics of conversation were there.
Rude.
Way to convince us that you belong here ya bellend lol
Calling them gay helps them apparently /s
Your account is hours old and you really think coming in here and scolding all of us for being anti-homophobes and anti-edgelords is the move?
You're getting this upset over the smallest pushback on using "gay" as an insult. Interesting.
Yeah when you say out loud in a room full of strangers that you want to be able to call people "gay" because it's funny, you're gonna get a reaction.
So, before you run your mouth any more, you should know that lemmy is a pretty small population and proudly obnoxious people may not be banned, but they sure as hell can be put on a lot of people's personal blocklists.
Immature? No, the word you're looking for is "homophobic."
It hasn't been fun for the past few years, it's been bots reposting other people's comments and an algorithm designed to get you angry and depressed enough to keep coming back for more.
It's much better here.
I haven't bothered to look into it, but historically, there were a lot of sites that let one create throwaway email addresses to avoid handing over email addresses and tying an online handle to personal information.
Sites that harvested this email data fought back by trying to blacklist those "throwaway email address" sites, but it's a game of whack-a-mole—like, those throwaway email address sites also set up and discard domains from a pool—so I imagine that it's likely possible to manage to find one that works, if you're determined to do so.
Note that throwaway sites do create security issues in that password recovery and similar often relies on a registered email address, so you're potentially entrusting some random throwaway email site with access to your account, since it can receive email from the site. I wouldn't use that for something important, but depending upon use, it could be useful.
Also, a number of sites—I don't know about what Reddit will be doing, but I think that Google requires this for account registration these days—require a phone number, and at least in the US, while you can get VoIP SIP service, don't need to tie that to a phone, I understand that there have been legal restrictions added on SMS service from this crowd in the past few years. I don't know if Google permits for validating a phone number via voice or requires demonstrating SMS capability.
I mean if it's a throw away account, who cares if anyone can access the password reset or confirmation codes? Since it's not like a Reddit account has access to anything important anyway. Reddit definitely goes the furthest that I've seen to ban and block any throw away email service from my experience.
You can just have one throwaway gmail address and use the suffix feature.
