I just don't know.
This cycle revealed that so many GOP candidates absolutely struggled because their base was split. They couldn't dissociate from Trump because the GOP base is the MAGA cult, but they lost all potential independent voters because they had to associate with Trump.
I wonder if there'll be a number of GOP reps who see the writing on the wall and turn on Trump to save their own careers. Trump will certainly not usurp democracy and get his 3rd term now, so they got less to fear.
Hard to say tho. Their behavior after Jan 6th isn't promising
Well, I think it’s a matter of legislative priorities: do the Democrats want to blow their wad using their control of Congress to try to get Trump impeached and then removed? It would be a monumental effort with little chance of meaningful success.
Most Democrats believe it would be a much better expenditure of resources, instead, blow that wad dragging literally everyone else in the Trump administration before an investigative committee and possibly impeaching and prosecuting them instead. There is so very much to go after all of them for, that it would be a real waste of time and effort to let everyone else go just so they could go after Trump and probably not succeed in getting him removed.
Not to mention that it would be far easier to prosecute and possibly jail Trump after he is out of office.
Honestly. Agreed.
While in office Trump is essentially immune to consequences - there's very little point in trying to go after him again.
But his administration and DOJ have been doing some very blatantly corrupt things for a while now, and their only safeguard was the Republican Congress refusing to do anything about it.
Now that the entire Congress is in Democrat hands, they're vulnerable - so going after them and essentially neutering Trump's tirade against democracy for the rest of his administration certainly seems the best path forward.
Though we've got the next two years to find out what's gonna go down.
You ain’t just whistlin’ Dixie.
Trump 2.0 was so much worse than Trump 1.0 because this time around he surrounded himself by a cadre of sycophant enablers. Going after all of them will be easy, Pickens, and it’s not as if they don’t all belong in jail, too. Especially that Pete Hegseth motherfucker. I’m perfectly happy for Congress to impeach his ass. and then, of course, prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.
Also they may be able to go after Musk for his doge bullshit, ideally they strip him of his shares, properties, and citizenship so as to ship his sub human ass back to South Africa broke as a popper.
And their replacements will have to be confirmed by a Democratic senate.
this also means no new Trumpy Supreme Court justices
Assuming they don't cram one through in the next two months. After that, though, yeah, the Supreme Court is looking up. Both Thomas and Alito will be having their 80th birthdays before the end of the next Presidential term is over. With today's Senate results the Democrats are likely to keep that chamber until 2032, at least. That means that if the next President is a Democrat (which is pretty likely) they'll be able to replace both Thomas and Alito, moving the court from 6-3 Republican to 5-4 Democratic. If they can also convince some of the older Democratic justices to retire during that time then they can keep that majority for a good long while.
Before they get the chance to replace Thomas and/or Alito, their first priority with SCOTUS should be to expand the court to 13 seats and then fill those vacancies
It is not a question of going after Trump's cronies or Trump himself. Not only are they obviously complimentary goals, but there is no "wad" to blow. Political capital is not the type of game where you spend a set amount of points and once those are gone, you need to wait for your next turn. They have serious momentum now; they have constituents waiting with bated breath to see if anything actually comes of voting en masse, and they need to be impressed.
Push harder for the release of the Epstein files. Push harder to immediately end hostilities with Iran. Prosecute Trump AND his allies, removing as many of them from office as possible. And still pass legislation that will tax the rich and help people make ends meet. These are all the things they got elected for, they can all be addressed simultaneously, and failure to do so will result in depressed turnout and bad outcomes in 2028.
