Hello! I am new here, and likely so are you.

It's great to see local communities online - and a great time to shape how we'd like to go on.

I'd love to hear people's thoughts on a display name change from Wellington to The Whanaganui-a-Tara.

This would not change the URL, or stop people finding us by searching Wellington.

Doesn't the community being !wellington@lemmy.nz indicate that it's this Wellington not another?

Maybe? If you search engine something Will you see that?

Yes, for federated sites like Lemmy, think of it like email. The community is not "wellington" but !wellington@lemmy.nz - the "!" helps us understand it's not an email address.

If you are on another Lemmy instance and search for Wellington, it will show the full "!wellington@lemmy.nz" probably along with others.
