so can we maybe stop voting for nazis who want to have the EU roll over and let russia take over?

Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
(This list may get expanded when necessary.)
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.
Then we will need to get governments that will actually do something against big capital making all our lives objectively worse.
The right has a story.. a factually incorrect, bigoted story.. the alternative is people yelling Nuh uh..
Anger motivates people.. so the left needs to give their base an enemy they can rise up against.
Imagine if there was an actual populist candidate on the left with the message "the economy is bad and the ultrawealthy are to blame". How sick would that be. Public smearing would probably start instantly.
They don't even get far enough to become candidate
Then we will need to get governments that will actually do something against big capital making all our lives objectively worse.
Then they should be voting for the anti-capitalist parties. They aren't though.
Because these parties tap into the anger people have with the current state of affairs.. and give them a narrative people can follow. I think it's lies and wont actually solve the issues.. but that did not matter to Germans in the 30s and it does not matter now. The left needs better rhetoric.
Example in the Netherlands is that our right wing populist wiped the floor with our left parties leader on healthcare co-pays. He said.. I'll reduce it to 0 immediately. The left said.. there is no money for that, we can half it in the next period and reduce further after that. The right won the elections.. and it turned out there is not enough money to reduce it to zero.. so they can only half it this time around. And the left is doing nothing about this.. such weakness.
What would you have them do? Point out the lies of the nazis? People don't seem to care, they seem to like the lying
Yes, address the lies and formulate a narrative that people can latch onto.
Populism for the left.. I'd be for actually pointing out the ultra rich and corporations robbing everyone and getting us to fight the race war instead of seeing the class war that is being waged against everyone.
They've tried. And not just parties, newspapers and private and public figures, have documented, shown, explained, listed, what have you, the lies of the nazis. People don't care. Or rather, the people who vote for the nazis don't care.
I think there are two kinds of nazi-voters. Actual nazis, and people who fall of their lies. The first group cannot be made to vote differently because you know, they're nazis. The characteristics of the second group, which have led them to fall for the nazi lies, make them unreachable for all normal forms of communication. Even if they get the truth slammed in their gullible faces, they'd typically rather double down than admit they were fooled.
I completely agree with you, we have a problwm, but the solution is not easy nor obvious - other than just banning nazi propaganda and the platforms that profit off of disseminating it, of course.
What narrative have the left provided. Here in the Netherlands the right threw a hissy fit on migrants.. and the left just went Nuh uh.. and we need to fix the environment so everyone needs to invest massively in their house with money they don't have. In the mean time billionaires and corporations cheat taxes and blatantly lie, while polluting orders of magnitudes more and getting left alone because they throw a tantrum, stonewall and sue.
I would have liked to see a properly crafted counter narrative to reighns in corporate interests, address tax evasion and helps people actually fix their shit.
Europe needs a progressive take, but that's not what the votes are giving us lately
Great! Ukraine needs our support now more than ever. Especially with the uncertainty that arises on the other side of the pond right now.
Slava Ukraini!
I think the EU should be closed to all Russians with exceptions for diplomatic personnel. For the rest, close the border, disallow purchase or sale of anything in Europe.. so they all also understand that in a future escalation we can also take their assets in the EU.
with exceptions for diplomatic personnel.
Especially the diplomatic personnel is laced with spies. Those exceptions should be absolutely marginal.
Hell I'd be for tagging them with those big yellow things we use on cows too.. ankle monitor.. whatever.. confine them to diplomatic terrain or under guard..
We don't have to give them the usual freedom of movement. It will probably happen with our people in Russia too.. just limit our presence there to people that are in the Embassy .. that leave the country every 2 weeks and rotate out.
I think we must help those Russians who openly speak out against Putin's regime and the war in the Ukraine, there are many.
