I had a feeling Apple would follow suit

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 22 points 7 hours ago

The speed at which these people are capitulating is alarming. I mean it took them decades to even begin to do any kind of rainbow capitalism and they all ditched it like a hot potato in a split second.

[–] meyotch@slrpnk.net 18 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

When you go to report an issue, and select “Name is wrong”, the send button never activates, whereas “something else” will.

So this is a bit of capitulation that seems to be hard coded and they just don’t want to hear about it.

[–] 0ndead@infosec.pub 4 points 2 hours ago

Correct it to Gulf of Mexico in the name field and then the send button activates

[–] weker01@sh.itjust.works 12 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Why are Americans so riled up about this?

Do you guys not realize that this reaction is literally one of the reasons they do this? To be a distraction and to show their base that they made the bad people™ cry about it.

[–] Kbobabob@lemmy.world 27 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Why are Americans so riled up about this?

For me, it's the blatant racism with some fascist nationalism thrown in.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 9 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I think you're under thinking this.

The primary focus of Trump since coming to office has been securing natural resources. Greenland, Canada, Ukraine all have rich mineral deposits. Even the Panama shit is about controlling a geographic "resource"...the canal.

This rename is about making it sound like it belongs to the US. What's there a lot of here? Oil. And it sits under international waters.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 4 points 7 hours ago

The US already has a lot of rights to the oil there. but the rigs aren't pumping because despite the drill, baby, drill crap US oil companies already have too much supply. He wants them to drill just to look like they're doing more shit.

This really is the dumbest timeline. I can't even make up satire shit that is more wild than what is now.

[–] tehn00bi@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

Just waiting for the TVA to prune us.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 11 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

It's like the shitpost version of blitzkrieg. Just overwhelming you with absolute diarrhea for the soul. And it's working, even though we all know it's happening.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 3 points 7 hours ago

That's their plan.

[–] Cataphract@lemmy.ml 7 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

You know, I had the shitty thought that at least back before chat communication, a robber baron (or it's equal kind) had to actually hire thugs and henchmen to cause local chaos. Now it's just some tech oligarch with some bots or a paid anonymous service causing disruption.

We really got fucked over on this one. I'm really not sure how America pulls itself out of this one with the state of education and political polarization. The federal part of our government definitely isn't offering up any solutions.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

You expressed it well. The best solution to our generational crisis is one that takes a generation or so to build-up (education) and that Republicans have already spent at least a generation already tearing down. We're sitting ducks.

[–] TheWilliamist@lemmy.world 39 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Reported an issue with the name. I know I’m shouting into the void on this but a small poke in the eye makes me feel better.

[–] Korrok@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 7 hours ago

I tried to do that, but it won't let me select the name of bodies of water.

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 106 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Apple has been suppressing the resistance in russia. They dont give a fuck about freedom or democracy. It’s naive to think theyll do anything but enable trumps takeover

[–] alexc@lemmy.world 62 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Of course not. They’re a corporation. We like to think they’re perhaps less evil than others, but the truth is they would harvest their users internal organs if they thought it would increase shareholder value.

Fuck Capitalism.

Tim Apple is literally a financial contributer to the Trump presidency. They are not being shy about their support. I'm Suprised it took them this long, but they've always been a bit behind with their maps project.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 84 points 22 hours ago
[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 34 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

Tim Apple is a pussy bitch.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 38 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Well, yeah, because the United States Geographical Service is the source of truth for geographical names. No surprise Google and Apple follow it. There's a little more breakdown than that, but that's the gist of it.

https://www.usgs.gov/us-board-on-geographic-names/domestic-names

The change is fucking stupid, you know it, I know it, we all know it. Save your fucking ire for all the real shit going down. In comparison, this doesn't rate a single breath.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 10 points 18 hours ago

This is correct, given a new administration can simply change it back to keep it in line with the rest of the world. Won't do us much good if there isn't a next administration, though.

Are you shocked?

[–] SeducingCamel@lemm.ee 0 points 1 hour ago

Did you really expect the trillionaire company to be on your side?

[–] fartsparkles@lemmy.world 11 points 20 hours ago (6 children)

Still says Gulf of Mexico to me. Is the change just for American users then?

[–] IcyToes@sh.itjust.works 11 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

In the UK, it says both. One above the other.

Spineless and pathetic.

In my view, the only ones that really care are the people whose opinions don't matter. The Gulf of Mexico will always be the Gulf of Mexico, regardless of what it may legally be called. Much the same way, in my view, X will always be Twitter, And Zuckerberg will always be POS.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 19 points 22 hours ago

Sears Tower

Staples Center

6th Avenue

Gulf of Mexico

I don't give a shit who thinks it should change, I'll use the original names forever

I wish this was the in top 10 reasons to be upset with the US right now.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

It doesn’t for me that’s weird.

Edit: if you put a pin it does show America

[–] bartleby1@lemmy.ml 5 points 17 hours ago

I’m gonna put a pin in this, but I’ll come back to it later

[–] irish_link@lemmy.world 17 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Unlike Google they still have a “report issue” button active.

Reported it on Apple Maps as the wrong name. See how long they let reports come in.

Well seeing as how Tim was right up there next to Sundar I'm not the least bit surprised.
