This show was honestly such a special gem. πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

I'm going to miss all the cleverness, great writing, and loads of fun. I wish I could be friends with all the characters. Boimler and Mariner's relationship is so wonderful. I want IRL friends like all of them. πŸ™ƒ

So long Lower Deck.

Engage the core.

Wasn't this the highest rated nu trek? Smart move by paramount to kill something so popular.

We demand 7 seasons!

I don't think there's any question that it was well-liked by the fandom.

However, I used to check in with Parrot Analytics fairly frequently - they're a site that purports to measure the overall "demand" of a series through a variety of means that I don't fully understand...but the industry uses their metrics.

"Lower Decks" was typically the second-lowest "in demand" new series - only "Prodigy" had a lower score.

That said, the demand for all of the new series was categorized as "outstanding."

I will never begin to understand how and why execs make the decisions they do.

No idea if it was most popular, but i wouldn't have thought so. The humor seemed directed mostly towards existing fans. I cant imagine they brought in many new viewers. I'd love to be surprised though.

I'm a counterexample here, although that's only an anecdote. Lower Decks was the first Star Trek show I've ever watched. Granted I was able to get some of the meta humor through cultural osmosis and hanging around other nerds, which was nice and may have helped.

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Of the live action, what have you enjoyed the most?

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Haven't watched any yet, but I've heard good things about DS9.

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

It's my favorite of them which I've rewatched though more than once. A tad dated, so I wonder if newly introduced folks would like it.

[–] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, I hate to say it, but it makes sense from a bean-counter's perspective. Lower Decks seemed to mostly target hardcore fans, and hardcore fans will already be subscribing to watch SNW. If its not gaining them any extra subscriptions, they don't care about it.

Section 31 and Academy are both trying to court people outside of the existing fandoms. Certainly not very successfully in the case of Section 31, but the reasoning at play is pretty clear.

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I know nothing of Academy, but I understand it's in the Discovery future. I kind of wish that arc brought them back to their time. That future is rough and... can scifi be too futuristic? Anyway, not sure if I will dig the Academy of that time, but can't knock it until I try it.

I kind of want to meet the new demographic that is into the latest Star Trek. As in, that's all they know and what they like best. I'm not sure that demographic is even formed yet, but I'm kind of curious how different they would be from the old Trek folks. What is it about the new track that they like versus the old.

[–] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

I’m old enough to remember the premiere of DS9, but I did appreciate Discovery’s move to the future. I liked the political aspects of the rebuilding of the Federation. I have always been a little bugged by how Earth centric Trek tends to be, so I especially appreciated the fact that Earth had seceded by the start of season 3. Not sure how much I can expect Academy to pick up on any of that, though.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Yeah, I agree. I think it's my favorite Star Trek.

[–] observantTrapezium@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It was absolutely the best of New Trek!

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So what do people classify as New Trek. Post Archer's Enterprise?

[–] observantTrapezium@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yep, I think that's how it's commonly understood.

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It certainly has its differences. I've really enjoyed SNW. Discovery had a lot of good, but plenty to counter balance it. I'm glad they wrapped it up because it really really needed to.

Now... this Section 31 movie? I watched the trailer. And... as much as I hate to say this because of how much I love Star Trek... I think I'm going to skip that one. Normally I watch everything out of devotion. Yep, that means watching some pretty bad stuff. I just don't know if this movie has any redeeming qualities though.

I love Yeoh, but I really don't like the Georgiou character much. And this movie takes place in the part of the Discovery timeline that I just didn't dig so much.

I don't know. Maybe.

I'd hate for there to be some Star Trek I didn't watch .

[–] observantTrapezium@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I watch 929 episodes (out of 930 to date), the 10 shorts, and the 14 movies. Out of devotion. Section 31 was indeed awful, what can I say. But it's only 90 minutes and you lose nothing if you multitask while watching.

IMO Lower Decks and Prodigy, the two animated shows, were the best by far of New Trek. Strange New Worlds is quite OK (and I have a soft spot for it since the Toronto episode). I hope it continues on the right path.

[–] ValueSubtracted@startrek.website 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I was able to find a couple of things I found interesting about Section 31, but I had to dig pretty deep to do it.

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

@observantTrapezium@lemmy.ca @ValueSubtracted@startrek.website yes. devotion. alas, i will probably eventually watch it. even if only as a background show while I am doing something else. i hope it doesn’t hurt. 😬

prodigy however, i never finished it. i don’t know why, but my youngest didn’t dig it and then it went through the re-homing. i just sorta forgot about it. i think it’s time i give it a second go. i’ll force him to watch it because all kids should be properly indoctrinated with trek. ;-)

I think Prodigy really improved in the second half of the first season and more so in the second season. I thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult watching by myself, no shame in that 😁

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Dare I ask what the 930th episode is?

Sure, it's SNW S02E09 ("Subspace Rhapsody"). I watched the teaser and decided to skip that one. I read the synopsis before watching the season finale.

[–] halm@leminal.space 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Engage the core.

No, no. Don't you dare go to warp on a workout joke!

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago

It had me rofl. πŸ˜πŸ’œ

So perfect.

[–] Corgana@startrek.website 6 points 3 days ago

I did too! Watched it on initial release but skipped the finale, then watched a second time with the finale. Like a lot of Trek it is even better the second time, there is a shocking amount of attention to detail for a silly cartoon.

My favorite aspect that LDS really nailed was that it regularly turned a Trek trope on it's head, and the "twist" in so many episodes turned out to be a positive well-intentioned misunderstanding instead of an ulterior motive.

[–] MalikMuaddibSoong@startrek.website 12 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Buffertime episode was the one where I became hooked.

The show consistently delivered until the very end, at least for me.

My only petty gripe is when I recently rewatched an episode: Riker comments about seeing Archer and the gang in the holodeck and now that I've seen ENT...I don't want to be reminded of the finale. I told you it was petty!

5 seasons and a movie, make it so!

[–] NakariLexfortaine@lemm.ee 4 points 3 days ago

2 movies.

Lower Decks earned it's place in the One Good, One Bad cycle(at least a tongue-in-cheek poke at it).

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Ooh! I didn't hear about a possible movie. Is it a sure thing?

I have no idea, but I hope so haha

A fun, animated Star Trek movie, full of fun and team spirit and community might hit just right in July 2026

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It's my favorite Trek since DS9. I need to re watch it. I was annoyed by Mariner and Boimler during the first episodes. But they had fantastic character development that made the first episodes necessary.

[–] match@pawb.social 4 points 2 days ago

Lower Decks for sure has the most DS9 energy of anything that isn't DS9. They even gay married Garak and Bashir!

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I have serious love-hate for her.

[–] nullPointer@programming.dev 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

great show, a classic for sure. I think all the scripts were written in all caps tho.

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

Ha! Because of all the cartoon energy? 😁

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wish I could be friends with all the characters

This is the mark of a truly great show

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago

Indeed. πŸ’œ

[–] Shdwdrgn@mander.xyz 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Man what are the odds??? I just finished the last episode today too! I've been dragging along on this last season because, ya know, last season and all, but it did certainly end with quite a bang.

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago

Same. I didn't want to rush it. Savor it, you know.

It left me with the good feels.

[–] Corgana@startrek.website 2 points 3 days ago

I just did earlier this week!!
