I'm SUPER excited, but also VERY concerned. So I'll be cautiously optimistic. But seeing the new Naked Gun with Liam Neeson, though a completely unrelated project, I'm hopeful that today's Hollywood might actually be able to pull this off.

Wait, was Naked Gun an actually good remake? I just assumed it wouldn't be.
Oh it was. My gf described it as a naked gun movie. Not better, not worse. The right amount of stupidity and the right kind.
Example from early on in the movie:
"Im sorry detective, im not myself today"
"No worries, im not you either"
I thought it was fantastic from beginning to end. Liam needing killed it. And it was, so, so stupid.
They were so skilled with the background jokes, too.
There's at least one joke that can only be seen by watching with subtitles. That's dedication.

Casting Liam Neeson is strong evidence they understood the assignment. You need a dramatic actor to lead a Naked Gun film.
You need an actor with a name that's hilariously similar to Leslie Nelson. Lol

I agree with this, it was a Naked Gun movie and as a standalone product I enjoyed it quite a bit.
It wasn't Leslie Nielsen, but they do have the same initials so that's good enough for me.
It's actually really great. Not the funniest movie I've ever seen, but they did the series justice and did just enough new things to keep it fresh. Would recommend giving it a watch if you like stupid humor.
Part of my hesitation is I normally don't like stupid humor, but I remember loving the series as a kid. I'll probably watch it anyway.
It was hilarious. I was full on belly laughing at some parts which is something I dont recall doing during any other movie in recent memory.
I loved it. I love the original 3 movies and the season of police squad. Liam did a great job and I laughed a bunch.
They did good and I hope spaceballs 2 can be similar.
The thing is, there is a related project: History of the World, Part II. YMMW on whether that dampens or increases your optimism.
I heard an interview with Josh Gadd who wrote the thing and pitched it to Mel. Filled me with optimism

He said himself he never retired. He stepped away for awhile to focus on his family after his wife died. He has also said in the past that acting offers just dried up. He hit pause, and the industry just moved on.
That might be literally true, that people just stopped calling with offers. But I don't believe for a second that if he showed up to a casting for some comedy, he wouldn't be offered something on the spot.

Aren’t actors agents supposed to do this sort of grunt work? If He really wanted to act his agent should be putting his name out there as much as possible. He’s got one hell of a resume, so I would have thought it would be relatively easy to get back into the game.
Typically. But he's been out for so long he likely doesn't or didn't have an agent. That's kind of what I was getting at. If he really wanted to try to get an acting job, he could've in a heartbeat.
But an agent isn't even necessary of your big enough. Bill Murray famously doesn't have one. You leave your pitch on his voicemail, he'll get back to you if he likes it. Then you just hope and prey he actually shows up.

I was joking with my sister wondering if Mel would be coming back as Scroob, under the assumption that Scroob died in the first one that he'll come back and someone will say:
"Somehow... Scroob has returned."

I loved history of the world part 2. Gives me some hope.
This is the only hope to having something good to remember about the sequel trilogy. Everybody loves a parody.

I've been excitedly hearing about this over the past year and I'm so hyped it's actually going to happen.
Is it considered retirement if you are still occasionally working?
It looks like it was a single voice cameo and a mobile phone commercial; I wouldn't really consider that small amount of work coming out of retirement. This will be his first actual full acting role since he retired.

It's was more voice acting than just a single cameo. There are also a few smaller TV movies, two sitcom episodes, reoccurring voice acting for one franchise, several smaller voice acting.
I'm not calling that a ton of work, but he's still been popping up here an there. Plus after Spaceballs 2, who's to say he does anything else? In 20 years you'd see one extra movie on there and visually it would be considered a one off.
Oh and that franchise role. When I look up the cast of Brother bear. It's the third listed character. That's not just a cameo that's a full voice acting job, unless you want to insult all voice actors and tell me otherwise.
Oh, I had assumed 2009 was his retirement year based on the IMDb history.
