I don't know where to write it so I put it here (awesome meme, my comment is offtop): I recently had a bit of free time between my PhD, activism, slacking, and just being there for my close ones. I thought, well, let's do something good for the Fediverse. I love c/science_memes at mander.xyz, so I reasoned: let's go to reddit and s t e a l some memes for this community. I searched for science memes on reddit and oh boy, they were crappy. Not a single one deserving to be here (if you cross-post to reddit, first stop, but also sorry I was there on a different day). Gosh it made me appreciate this place. Please, keep on being awesome and, since idk who you are and don't want to be unrealistic, I can only wish you a median-good day.

(This meme was stolen from reddit) ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I guess you are better at stealing then ยฏ\(ใƒ„)/ยฏ

Or, to express it differently: Thanks for digging through the mud to share diamonds with us :*

According to this dataset, 100% of everyone is gay. I'm going to take advantage of this new information.

[โ€“] SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Shocking how often theres an overlap with !antimeme@sopuli.xyz

Will they cancel each other out in a massive explosion of energy?

[โ€“] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

They don't believe in explosions over there, so no.

explosions are for barbars. civilized people do slow controlled combustion.

The natural synthesis

I think that's part of the joke. Instead of the snappy punchline, there's a long and tedious realistic answer that goen on long after the point has been made.

[โ€“] Draegur@lemmy.zip 13 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

I know it's more likely the cut off text continues dryly... "Individuals in this (room blah blah etc)"

But i choose to believe the following:

This meme is an example of
how small sample size can
affect data. The three people in
the room (you included) do not
represent the data cited by the
dog with any accuracy, as the
number of gay individuals is three.

[โ€“] SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 9 months ago (1 children)

But that antimeme would go back and become a meme again.

[โ€“] Draegur@lemmy.zip 5 points 9 months ago

A delightful third act switcheroo!

[โ€“] logicbomb@lemmy.world 12 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Given the explanation that says "you included", I'm guessing that the original joke was both the people said, "I'm not gay", and then they look at you, the reader, making you the one out of three people who is gay.

It's basically the same joke I heard a comedian tell about San Francisco in probably the 1980s. "Look to your left. Look to your right. If they're not gay, you are." I'm guessing the joke is way older than that, though. It doesn't work today because the majority of us all finally agreed that "You're gay" isn't an insult.

[โ€“] snooggums@piefed.world 4 points 9 months ago

This meme is mocking that joke, yes.

"...the data cited by the dog..."

[โ€“] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Man, I hate these stupid jokes. Every time someone goes "statistically, one in three people is X, now look at the person to your left and right", I want to scream "HAHAHAHAHAHAH SO FUNNY THAT'S STATISTICS FOR YOU AMIRITE" with an absolutely straight face. Bad enough they don't know how statistics work, but they're perpetuating other people's ignorance on top of that.

[โ€“] blackbrook@mander.xyz 5 points 9 months ago

The unfunnyness and homophobia of the joke aside, this kind of joke doesn't expect people to actually believe that statistics work this way. Part of the joke is the ridiculousness of expecting statistics to work that way. While there may indeed be some people so stupid/ignorant that they DO expect statistics to work this way, that's not really the way this kind of humor is meant to work.

[โ€“] danc4498@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago

Look to your left. Now look to your right. Now do the Hokey Pokey.

By induction, you are gay too.

[โ€“] dumbass@aussie.zone 5 points 9 months ago

Nawwww, I don't want to be the straight one again, it's getting boring.

[โ€“] 4am@lemmy.zip 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

THE NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS IN THIS WHAT?? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Unfortunately we will never find out ๐Ÿ˜”

[โ€“] Bamboodpanda@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago

Sciencey with a wiff of shit post. I like it.

[โ€“] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 3 points 9 months ago

Brought to you by the central limit theorem society

[โ€“] RedSnt@feddit.dk 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Aaand that's how statistics work. But you should always be wary of the sample size! Especially in comparison to the "thing", like if 1000 people were asked questions and they came from India, that'd be a really bad survey.

[โ€“] MBM@lemmings.world 2 points 9 months ago

If it's properly random then 1000 is a pretty big sample size though (depending on the study etc. etc.)

[โ€“] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

"central limit theorem society" sounds like some futuristic af fiction thing straight out of neon genesis evangelion, alongside the scrolls from the dead sea and the central dogma.

[โ€“] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

They say two out of five people on the highway around barclose are drunk. The other two are cops. Which really sucks.

[โ€“] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Why would you not want someone to stop drunk driving? I get that we hate cops, but we should all really hate drunk driving more.

[โ€“] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

you missed the joke.

2 out of 5 are drunk. The other two are cops. you're the fifth.

I work nights and commute home around that time. I get pulled over once a month because a bored cop wants to see if I'm drunk for an easy arrest.

I would love it if people stopped drinking and driving; but I also don't like my civil rights being violated. every interaction with a cop is a chance for bad shit to happen.

[โ€“] I_Clean_Here@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

whats life like being absolutely brain-fried?

[โ€“] melsaskca@lemmy.ca -1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

That's why polls are meaningless even though they are referenced, followed and reported on. Nothing is statistically significant anymore. Publish any shit that supports your position, just add a "+/-" percentage number at the end and it'll look "professionalish".

[โ€“] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Stats require a sample from a smaller population that represents the entire population. Phone polls don't include people a) without phones b) who ignore unknown calls c) who decline to reply to poll calls and d) who lie to poll calls (at least not accurately). I know I've been tempted to lie when someone reaches out on behalf of a politician I don't like, though usually I just ignore the texts.

Exit polls can be similarly affected, though the dynamics are a bit different.
