MODERATORS

For those who don't know the original reason LemmyNSFW went down:
Xaeg/Yay was the owner of LemmyNSFW, and he had access to and paid for the domain, server, and everything else related to the site. He had been AWOL for about 6 months, and suddenly in mid February of 2026, the server and the domain stopped being paid for. I had no access to the server to get the database.

Because of this, it appeared LemmyNSFW as it was, and all the content on it, had died.

So I created FediNSFW.app to be the replacement! It is a piefed instance instead of a lemmy one because if there’s one thing NSFW content benefits from it’s good moderation tools and flairs, and piefed has those things.

more info here

now, back to the new update:

How is LemmyNSFW online now?

Xaeg finally responded! he gave me access to a backup of the site and ownership of the domain!

What does this change?

tldr: LemmyNSFW is now an archive, FediNSFW.app is the new fully running instance

Fedinsfw.app will continue to run as a normal piefed instance, and lemmynsfw will be an archive for the foreseeable future. It is just too much work and cost to manage two instances and all their storage and cost right now. Additionally piefed's advanced moderation and community options are just a much better fit for a NSFW instance like this.

Hopefully this solution feels like "the best of both worlds" so to speak: This way you can view the posts you've made and even crosspost old posts to fedinsfw.app if you'd like, while also benefiting from the awesome piefed features.

Edit: Holy moly, something in lemmy is running wild and eating up a ton of resources, until I diagnose it, lemmynsfw will be down

Edit 2: ok, I think it's good now, emphasis on THINK, the status of lemmynsfw may be subject to change

I apologize to everyone. I disappointed you all. I haven't been able to moderate the instance for the past year. I was only dealing with financial matters every few weeks.

Due to changes in my life, I haven't been able to check on the instance for the last month, and during that time the server was nuked. It was an unfortunate event.

Nevertheless, I thank @lemmyposter212@fedinsfw.app for continuing it and for making the old instance available as an archive.

As someone inexperienced in this area, it was interesting and also tiring experience. Still, I'm sure I won't get involved again :)

Thank you very much for the work you invested in lemmynsfw, it was amazing while it lasted, and we're glad it continues here!

Your efforts and time invested are totally appreciated. Thank you 🙏

Hosting isn't an easy thing! You did a lot of good work and I learned a lot from you! Thanks for all you've done!

Don't be too hard on yourself. Life happens and stuff like this is not uncommon in smaller, self-made online communities. Thanks for all your work, I really enjoyed the old instance (and I'm looking forward to seeing the new one grow).

You didn't disappoint, we thank you so much for everything and I hope your doing ok now

[–] ddd@fedinsfw.app 3 points 5 months ago

Don't feel bad! You kept a good instance going for a long time. It's a lot of work, and we appreciate it.

You didn’t disappoint me, you provided a good service to me for a long time without pay. Thank you!

[–] fuwa@fedinsfw.app 2 points 4 months ago

No worries. I think we're all glad that you're alive and well, frankly! 😂

While the transition could have gone smoother, I think it's all part of the growing pains of the fediverse: figuring out how to make these communities robust and sustainable, removing hard dependencies load-bearing members and single points of failure, knowing how to keep communities together when stuff goes wrong, etc.

Imagine running the largest NSFW instance on Lemmy and not having a friend or family member know about it, and have access to maintain it in case something happens to you.

But how does one explain to their family and friends that they are admin to a NSFW instance and should something happen to them what to do with the porn instance and what priority level it is.

[–] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 68 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Yeah, they'd be like "oh haha, is the the computer where you keep your porn", and the response would be "no, this is the computer where I keep everyone's porn"

[–] robocall@lemmy.world 29 points 5 months ago (1 children)

"Honey, you know how strongly I feel about the Fediverse and corporate free social media and FOSS, that's the reason I have created the largest porn instance in the entire world. Not because I want to jork to it or watch it before you get home, but because of my strong values and beliefs in the Fediverse and open source software. I love you for understanding"

[–] xaeg@fedinsfw.app 31 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Actually, that's why I created Lemmy NSFW :) There was no pornographic content at all; I had just joined from Reddit in 2023, I was quite enthusiastic, and that's how it was created.

Then I learned that you needed to be sufficiently engaged to moderate a porn site, and that was the beginning of my decline.

[–] robocall@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'm curious how many people IRL you told about your instance?

[–] xaeg@fedinsfw.app 4 points 5 months ago

One, my best friend

[–] gektra@fedinsfw.app 3 points 5 months ago

Not only that, but it switches the old argument. Instead of "delete my porn if I die suddenly" it's "I entrust this instance to your care from now forward"

[–] Angryhumanoid@fedinsfw.app 8 points 5 months ago

It's a shame when you think about it, hard to put on a resume in such a way that captures the true scope of it.

[–] readonly@fedinsfw.app 30 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

this also means settings exports (with subscriptions) can be done, as well as notes in profiles about new accounts for those who want that. the settings exports can be imported in piefed as well.

[–] lemmyposter212@fedinsfw.app 16 points 5 months ago

yes that too!

[–] show_me_what_you_got_grrl@fedinsfw.app 15 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Thanks for getting it back up lemmyposter. Although kind of abrupt, this new platform is a lot better. I appreciate having the chance to see what was there before

It's probably going to get slammed the whole time it's up though

[–] lemmyposter212@fedinsfw.app 6 points 5 months ago

no, something was wrong, in fact I have a hanging docker container that will not delete, start, kill, anything, I have never had this issue

[–] biwopi@fedinsfw.app 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

There has to be a way to import all the posts to fedinsfw and then redirect lemmynsfw links to these imported posts.

My ocd doesn't like having to run both servers. 😬

[–] lemmyposter212@fedinsfw.app 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

I don't love it either, and maybe one day we'll sunset lemmynsfw, but I want to have it up so people can download photos they lost and copy their subscriptions and everything. But treat fedinsfw as the main server, lemmynsfw is an archive.

[–] Diocese3049@fedinsfw.app 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Can piefed's community import tool be used?

[–] lemmyposter212@fedinsfw.app 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

What is this that you speak of

[–] Diocese3049@fedinsfw.app 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

When lemm.ee went down, rimu revealed a community import tool. It allows communities to be moved onto piefed instances.

[–] lemmyposter212@fedinsfw.app 3 points 5 months ago

Hmm, I'll look into this. I didn't know that existed.

[–] Trapezoid4092@fedinsfw.app 3 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Is it just me or are there a lot of broken images?

[–] lemmyposter212@fedinsfw.app 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

I will keep working on it to see if I can fine tune the limitations I put on it so that images will load more reliably though

edit: I made some tweaks to everything and I think it's working and loading better now! Let me know if you have more issues

[–] Trapezoid4092@fedinsfw.app 2 points 5 months ago

Yeah, seems a lot better now. Thanks!

[–] lemmyposter212@fedinsfw.app 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Yeah it's performance is limited so it might have some slow and failed loads, if I didn't do that it literally at all the server resources. Idk why but piefed is much more lightweight.

It's also not on the cloud flair "premium" tier, so the hosting is a little bit slower too. I just couldn't cover that added cost right now.

It is an archive though, it's available, not necessarily fast. The good news is if you access those pages from other instances they should load faster.

[–] b9999998@fedinsfw.app 1 points 5 months ago

Same here for me - using boost app.
