Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1828 readers
316 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

A comparison isn’t an accusation of literally being a Nazi, and the user being scolded was the one who brought it up.

Person did some Nazi-like shit, got called out. I don’t see an issue here.

"Literally"

Same mod then deleted that thread, hiding and removing all the legitimate criticism people had.

Then they started a new thread telling people not to say mean things about their mod friend.

When I called them out for their bullshit running defense for the tesseract dev, they deleted my post and banned me.

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 days ago

Whoa, really?

Yeah it’s gone. Wow. now THAT’s ye power trippin bastards material.

[–] eugenevdebs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

Oh, that's why my comments got removed and banned. More proof lemmy.world is the reddit of the fediberse.

[–] flamingos@feddit.uk 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

user being scolded was the one who brought it up.

I mean, they (the Tesseract dev) didn't? Someone else said Tesseract moved to Argentina and changed its name, like that's obviously about the Nazis.

Also, 'get some therapy', why are you assuming they're mentally unwell?

Also, 'get some therapy', why are you assuming they're mentally unwell?

I mean... Who isn't unwell these days?

[–] EmilieEasie@fedinsfw.app 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Good point, we should all see a therapist.

[–] Fuckfuckmyfuckingass@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Who therapies the therapists?

[–] EmilieEasie@fedinsfw.app 2 points 3 days ago

it's a circle jerk situation

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 0 points 3 days ago

It's the rapists all the way down.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

I think people making excuses for the mod are forgetting that this is the Internet, where it's okay to be a little rude sometimes. Especially towards people doing shady shit. As long as you're reasonable, which in my opinion OP was.

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 13 points 3 days ago (3 children)

While I think Tesseract's censorship went too far, comparing it to Nazi censorship is ludicrous.

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Shadow banning trans communities anti colonialism and genocide people, leftists. Yeah that's very nazi like

[–] eugenevdebs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago

It's literally the first of what the Nazis removed, but it's not fascism

[–] eugenevdebs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So do you think censoring communities the Nazis censored is politically neutral and good?

[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It doesn't have to be good or neutral to be a different thing that doesn't merit the same response.

[–] Luminous5481@anarchist.nexus 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

you're right, it's not nazism. what it is is criminal. a secret backdoor that allowed someone to take control over the users of an unrelated website? that's the kind of thing that gets you prison time in the US.

[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

If this level of manipulative dishonesty and user hostile behavior gets you prison time, I look forward to seeing the likes of zuckerberg and spez behind bars.

We really gotta stop calling petty inconveniences nazi fascism.

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Someone slipped a backdoor into public communications software to secretly silence people he didn’t like, most of whom were leftists and LGBTQIA+

On the scale of petty inconvenience to - we’ll call it “fascism” to be polite - I'm leaning more towards the fascism.

That’s not an oopsie, that’s not “a poor decision that wasn’t worth mentioning because of the drama it would cause” - you are cheating discourse to forward your own agenda. You are abusing a position of power and trust in secret with malice aforethought to silence valid voices.

I mean clearly the ramifications were limited both by the time between implementation and discovery, and the proliferation of Lemmy users on his frontend overall, however I don’t really think scope plays a part in labeling intent. I don’t think comparing it to something those fascists who shall not be named lest my point be taken less seriously given all the hyperbole that’s taken place on the internet since the dawn of time would do is really a stretch.

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The scope of the inconvenience is all of a front end app on a link aggregator site/forum.

I'm not saying it doesn't suck, I made my own post about it on here, but I'm far from comparing this to dictatorial control. I call it being a misguided asshole.

[–] davel@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What forest; all I see are individual trees. What fascism; all I see are individual misguided, lone wolf assholes.

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Hey, I like you and usually support the points you make.

Unfortunately anything AdmiralPatrick said was removed, but I believed him when he said it was mainly about calls to violence not being moderated. That's supported by a lot of reasons given in the code on the ban list.

Personally, I don't agree with moderating general calls to violence, but I can believe that in his mind he had some logic behind it. That's not to say that fascists don't have some misguided logic that leads them to terrible conclusions, and the dev's attempt to secretly control the user experience is a deplorable mismanagement of a platform, but I don't like the idea of watering down a term we apply to genocidal, racist, authoritarian dictators.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

He banned the Wholesome Yuri comm lol

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 0 points 3 days ago

I'd love to know the reason behind that one, too.

Once, during a brief foray into working for the provincial government, I had to disentangle a pile of paperwork left behind by someone who was going through a mental breakdown. Files were all over the place, a complete clusterfuck - until I discovered a pattern, a weird logic to how they were filing everything. Once I found the pattern it all made sense in the strangest way.

Now a veteran of my own breakdowns, I think that might be what's happening here.

[–] davel@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

He used various rationalizations, and yes, calls to violence was among them.

But that isn’t a universally valid excuse. Consider the UN’s recognition of Palestinians’s right to struggle against their occupiers by any means, including violent ones. To suppress that is to support Israel’s fascist genocide.

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I don't follow this logic. Could you explain?

[–] davel@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 days ago

Violence against unjust oppression is sometimes justified, and suppression of that just violence is itself a form of unjust violence in maintenance of the original, unjust violent oppression.

“John Brown did nothing wrong” is a meme, but slave revolts are justified. The Warsaw ghetto uprising was justified. Al Aqsa Flood was justified. Iran’s retaliations to the failed regime change “color revolution” and subsequent air attacks are justified.

There’s a long history of liberals siding with fascists by concern trolling justified violence. There is much less daylight between liberals and fascists than liberals realize or will admit. Previously.
