Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Caramel isn't a flavour, it's just burnt sugar. I don't care for it. It's sticky and unpleasant and I would rather it not be in my desserts.

Massively faulty premise. The point isn't to burn sugars but to heat them slowly so as to bring about (wait for it) caramelization.

Quite aside from producing sweets, this is one of the most critical chemical reactions in cooking(†), used in any number of popular, classic dishes.

EDIT: (†) and arguably even in human evolution, believe it or not.

Upvote that your whole premise sucks. πŸ™‚

I would have expected a user named JohnnyEnzyme to value the denaturation of proteins during heating higher than some boring carbohydrates making some polymerisation reactions. ;-)

Ugh.
I took NUTR101 and CHEM102 a long time ago, and never Food Science / Chemistry 101.

Consider me your dumbass. :D

I would disagree and say it's the Maillard reaction which is similar but different from caramelization.

Multiple things can be true, and often are.

congrats, now that is an unpopular opinion. caramel is so awesome, it has its own verb

Butter, cream, salt are all a huge part of the flavor too. Also, its a Maillard reaction, not oxidation. So, not only is your opinion unpopular, it is also objectively false.

It's an incorrect opinion, not liking caramel is fine but caramelization is chemically completely distinct from burning. That's like saying you only like sushi because cooked fish is just burnt fish

If you burnt your sugar you blew past the caramel stages

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 34 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Yep. This is unpopular.

Bourbon, banana, maple, caramel, vanilla... they all dance around a midpoint flavor of the gods.

Upvote for a truly unpopular opinion!

Also, your description of caramel is incorrect, caramel is caramelized sugar. But that doesn't effect you not liking it!

Burnt sugar does not = caramel.

This post is invalid.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

I wholeheartedly disagree but congrats for having an actual unpopular opinion.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

Damn a real unpopular opinion

Nah sugar is just undercooked caramel!

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

If you burn the sugar, it most assuredly is not caramel. It's also not usually just melted sugar but a mixture of melted sugar, salt, butter, and heavy cream.

[–] SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 week ago

I don't like caramel desserts, but this is just culinarily incorrect. It's not burnt sugar, it's sugar that's undergone a millard reaction. This is how many many foods are also prepared, and what makes them delicious.

Carmel isn't burnt sugar any more than a seared steak is burnt meat.

[–] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I have noticed lately that commercially available caramel doesn't taste like caramel anymore, it just tastes sweet

Yea, definitely right about the commercial chemical machine-shat shit. Capitalism is really showing its true colors lately...

Upvoting for an actual unpopular opinion, you psychopath

[–] absGeekNZ 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Truly unpopular.

Caramel, especially salted caramel is really good.

I think salting caramel makes it especially gross and won’t eat salted caramel at all.

[–] 0li0li@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Fuck you! Agree upvote.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It can also be burnt milk fat, such as Dulce Leches.

[–] bufalo1973@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

Dulce de leche. It's Spanish.

OP mad because they got caramel on their fingers.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Same opinion for butterscotch or nah?

[–] FuckingHA@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Butterscotch is even worse than caramel.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Fuck you Butterscotch is rad, but also good on you for being consistent regarding your burnt sugar opinions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterscotch

Not OP but yes, I think it’s also gross

Thats not just unpopular, thats a verified trash take. Take my upvote and leave earth

[–] lena@gregtech.eu 3 points 1 week ago

Wow, I'm not the only one

Definitely unpopular by any metric!

I'll add to the list of folks explaining that the way you describe caramel isn't accurate, as there is a difference between burnt sugar and caramel.

I'll also add my own bit of opinion that not all caramel is equal. When made on the cheap, particularly in commercial sized batches, it's way less likely to be anything other than why you say you don't like it: sticky and unpleasant. Shitty caramel is most often not even caramel, it's a flavored and thickened syrup, which will have only scant flavor beyond being cloying.

You probably wouldn't like good caramel either though, So I won't waste your time or mine explaining how to make it. But suffice it to say that if it's homemade, you have much better control of the results, and thus a better chance of it being good.

Homemade toffee is one of the most delicious substances on the planet.

Goat milk caramel, oooooh so delicious.

Yes soft caramel is sticky but the flavor is amazing. Magically changed by heat from just butter and sugar and cream to caramel.

Any cookie with butter and sugar has a similar toasted sugar flavor. It's a foundational flavor in cooking.

Thank you for you absolutely trash opinion on this delicious food. Perfection.

[–] Crozekiel@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

It literally isn't just burnt sugar... That is like calling anything cooked "just burnt". Also, caramel usually has butter and cream in as well, so it's even worse than that. "I hate cake, it's literally just burnt flour".

You're a loon and your opinion is hot garbage.
