We’ve solved this problem with technology, you no longer have to choose between shade and looking cool.

Watch them use it sideways.

That's the Napoleon.. All the kids with Sherlocks are doing it.

[-] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 4 points 3 weeks ago

Which way is the cool way though? You want the designer in front or back? I'm going to say it's situation dependent. Out by yourself? Pattern back would be cooler. But you wanna put your best front forward for like a job interview.

I was out hiking a couple years ago when I suddenly realised that I had become the guy with shades and a backwards cap. It's practical: I want to prevent a sunburn in my neck (the backwards cap) and also not have the sun in my eyes (shades). I spent some time coming to terms with it, but now that's how I'm regularly equipped in harsh sun in the mountains. It's simply the optimal solution to sun protection while hiking (I've tried wide-brimmed hats, but they get caught in the wind too easily in my experience).

You could go for something like this, just without the face flap bit. They look kinda goofy but work pretty well

[-] Wolf314159@startrek.website 2 points 3 weeks ago

These are also pretty good at shielding you from biting insects and fascist police state spy cameras.

[-] Sibshops@lemmy.myserv.one 2 points 3 weeks ago

My goto in a tatch straw hat and a wide-brimmed bucket hat with an elastic tightener and chin strap.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

My solution is much more simple. I just never go outside.

[-] Elgenzay@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago

When i do it, the cap's to keep my hair in check and the sunglasses are superior to the brim, which i don't like how it also obstructs the top of my vision.

Nowadays though i just use a hair tie

Pfft. Turtleneck. Or more realistically, one of them “buff” things. Basically turns whatever you’re wearing into a turtleneck.

Hats are hot and stuffy, I’ve found. I carry an umbrella as a parasol unless I’m biking or need both hands. Then it’s the Buff.

Also, a backwards hat to protect from the sun realistically offers dubious protection unless you are always walking directly away from the sun.

[-] thebestaquaman@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

I use a buff to keep warm in winter, couldn't imagine wearing one in summer!

a backwards hat to protect from the sun realistically offers dubious protection unless you are always walking directly away from the sun.

I typically flip it depending on sun direction. I've found the neck to be most critical though, I don't seem to burn as easily on the sides/front.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 3 weeks ago

I want a modern Sherlock Holmes style hat that's just a baseball cap with 2 brims.

[-] that_lightnin@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 weeks ago

It would cut into the bro bro factor

[-] wjrii@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I was going to try to defend these guys and say that a sunburned neck suuuucks, but then I remembered where the sun needs to be in order for you to desperately need the bill to shade your eyes...

[-] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 2 points 3 weeks ago

At some point the meaning of the baseball cap worn backwards flipped from “streetwise hepcat who can probably breakdance and/or scratch and is handy with a spraycan” to “basic macho dude”

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

It's so you can look cool and still see square.

[-] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

2012? Mf, this is like 90s joke on a 2004 template.

[-] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Don't you know? Nobody answers their phone, grandpa. If it's important, they will send a message.
