Laundry is so much worse than dishes.

At least I don't have to fold the dishes.

[-] irotsoma@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago

But laundry doesn't get moldy...at least not as quickly... Lol. Mold kicks my ass.

Laundry definitely gets moldy when you forget to put it in the dryer.

Try to remember to open the lid after the cleaning is done. The mold will be in your clothes; but it will also grow in the outer drum of your washer. Which after years of use will start showing up in your "clean" clothes as these little dark flakes of mold and soap mildew gunk. Ask me how I know. If it gets to that point you likely need to take the washer apart to remove it. Or spend a week running "cleaning" cycles until they go away.

Don't overfill the detergent. Leave the lid open after a wash is done. And use the "tub clean" feature once a month with no clothes in it.

You can add DISHWASHER powder detergent (yes dish detergent) directly in the tub when you use the cleaning cycle. If no cleaning cycle exist just use the "heavy duty" or "bedding" cycle with the hotest water.

They sell "cleaning tablets" for washers but they are basically just dishwasher detergent. And powder detergent is superior anyway for dishes so you can just use that (bull I'll leave the liquid vs. powder rant alone this comment is already long).

Also a good habit to hit the "extra rinse" option sometimes. Will purge the detergent more and reduce a chance of mold building up.

TLDR: clean your washer

Yeah I meant more on the dishes themselves waiting to be washed vs on the clothes waiting to be washed. If I put off washing clothes, I just have more to wash. If I put off washing dishes, they turn to horrible piles of mold and other rancid smells.

My issue this week was getting throat surgery and the next day wildfire smoke moved in strong. I have to avoid coughing at all costs. Dishwasher was full and I ran it but didn't empty it due to a coughing fit. And that doesn't help with good knives, pots and pans and utensils and such that can't go in the dishwasher. So now all of the dirty dishes are in the sink and getting rancid. Hoping the smoke clears so I can stand up without literally bloody coughing and sneezing fits that were likely tearing the sutures even more than from coughing while just sitting around.

But the laundry is just sitting there. I might end up with an extra load or two to do, but it won't be attacking me with rancid smells and spores every time I approach it for the next week or so. Since I didn't leave the house and only have to go out a few times next week, I should have plenty of clothes to make it through. But dishes there's a much more limited supply and limited room in the dishwasher and sink.

And yeah that's an extreme with the bad timing on conservatives who don't believed in climate change setting themselves on fire yet again, but just the ADHD alone often puts me in those situations. So laundry seems less daunting than dishes. It can be set aside in a spoon conservation time and not affect my health too much compared to dishes. I've thought about disposable stuff, but the price for true compostables, not just "biodegradables" just isn't there yet. We do have commercial composting trash pickups in my city at least.

Folds up Ghostbusters tv tray, slams it into the corner

FUCK THIS, I'M NEVER LAUNDERING THAT THING AGAIN!

[-] wheezy@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago

Dishes get worse than laundry when you get older. At least if you're like a lot of ADHD people and have awful back pain from that ADHD "sitting" posture. Which for me is has basically been sitting on my left leg in a painful way enough to keep my legs from moving.

Anyway, grabbing dishes hurts my back. Lots of bending down and going back up. Fucking hate it.

For laundry, I can at least sit down and watch a video while I fold. It's kinda peaceful in comparison.

[-] brem@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

You can get paid to do all of that stuff with your feet

Laundry is the other sysiphisian task. Even if you completely catch up on laundry, when you look down, boom you're wearing MORE laundry.

[-] riquisimo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah like, ya'll don't have a dishwasher?

"We do, but we have kids."

Ok, well that's on you then. But hey, eventually you can teach them to rinse their own and put them in the washer.

[-] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 1 points 3 weeks ago

Dishwashers aren't as common outside the US. But you don't really need to rinse 98% of what you put in there. You can learn how to load and operate the machine in a way that foregoes pre rinse.

[-] riquisimo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah but if you leave gunk on all the time you gotta clean the strainer at the bottom of the washer more frequently. Gotta at least get the solids off.

[-] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 1 points 3 weeks ago

You should scrape the excess with the cutlery on the garbage can, but no need to use water. And yes, gotta clean the strainer at least weekly.

Like the cleaning of a house... It Never Ends...

[-] Beehaw_Girl@beehaw.org 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I've found a way around that. Don't use dishes. Edit: after reading Doc_Crankenstein's comment I realize what I really do is have one fork, one spoon, one knife, one bowl, and one cup, and habitually clean them immediately after use so I don't even notice the chore, it's as automatic as eating. Never have a dirty dish.

[-] whelk@retrolemmy.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

This is the way to do it. Please help me convince the people I live with

[-] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

The key to this is reducing the total amount of dishes owned and getting into a good habit of washing immediately after use.

Washing immediately takes far less effort than waiting for dishes to pile up, but even if they did, reducing the total dishes meant that the pile never got to the insurmountable mountain of dishes.

Unfortunately I lost the job and had to move, so that entire system is bunked cause roommates insist on having more dishes than an average restaurant.

[-] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Get a mini instant pot. Cook your meal in there, then eat out of the pot, wash the pot and spoon. Done!

[-] Cyberfuchs@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 weeks ago

I don't know but.. Isn't cleaning the bathroom and the toilets the endboss?

[-] AddLemmus@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago

It's almost funny how I procrastinated on getting a dishwasher! I had the "idea" in 1999.

But then, I could not get it into a clear sequence of steps. It was always mind-chaos like: Really need a dishwasher, can I even set it up here, how about the washing machine, y-split for water or keep switching, where would I put it, can I do it or do I need someone to set it up, maybe order from a service that sets it up for you, they don't to complex things though, just attach the water ...

Eventually 23 years (!) after this got a simple one where you just pour water in, no setup required. When that one broke, I had meds and could easily just order a regular one, break down the steps to install it (wasn't even easy, the professionals failed, but step by step), and execute them one by one over a few days.

It doesn't solve all problems, but it is so much less mental effort now ...

[-] Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 weeks ago

Isn't the very definition of a household chore that it's a recurring task related to cleaning or preparing things at home?
