Abraham Lincoln didn't free the slaves Slaves fought for their rights and freed themselves.

Stop giving that guy all the credit for signing the Emancipation Proclamation, especially since he ordered the biggest mass execution against indigenous people in history.

Trump is a convicted felon and should've been disqualified from the election.

I see the point of the graphic, but I think everyone in a position of power should be held accountable for soliciting sexual favor from underlings. That goes hundredfold when you are the president of the United States and she’s a twenty year old intern.

In the same vein,

  • Obama "drone strike king" did way worse than wear a tan suit. He assassinated gadafi, and holds (held?) the record for most deportations with reports of immigrant children in cages.
  • Biden had that whole rio grande fiasco where people were drowning everyday as he opened the asylum loophole which set T boy up for a win ( almost suspiciously efficiently, wouldn't you say?)

Make no mistake, folks, the Two Party Mafia is corrupt all around.

Check out the You're Wrong About on Monica Lewinsky. Even she admits the affair was between two consenting adults. The scandal was not that Clinton abused his power but that he committed adultery (which is legal in all fifty states). Republicans at the time were arguing a man who couldn't keep marital commitments is not fit for office.

Obviously by the time of Trump, they didn't care anymore.

Of all the (many, many) sex scandals in state and federal politics (and coming out of the religious right), The Lewensky affair was incredibly benign. If they have an R next to their name, though, no-one cares.

And then historical Presidents like Kennedy, FDR AND McKinley were far more scandalous.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 days ago

The scandal was that he lied about his affair with Monica lewinski when he was under oath testifying as the dependant in a sexual harassment inquiry.

Held accountable?

Her name has been a joke for decades.

She got dragged through the mud and they went after Bill for lying, not being a predator.

In what way would you call it a win for anything except hypocrisy?

The Senate didn't impeach Bill because Hustler magazine siad they had a list of all the Senators who'd done the same thing.

[–] vzqq@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This feels like you’re trying to accuse me of something, but if you don’t actually say it I can’t really speak to it.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm just pointing out that Monica was threated a million times worse by the 'pure' people than by Bill.

[–] vzqq@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Seriously? Is this the hill you pick? “Other people were worse to than her boss who shoved his cock down her throat and also was the literal boss of the western world?”

Dude. Fuck you.

[–] blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They were saying that Clinton wasn't held accountable enough. They didn't talk about anyone being worse than him.

[–] vzqq@lemmy.blahaj.zone -3 points 4 days ago

I'm just pointing out that Monica was threated a million times worse by the 'pure' people than by Bill.

You know, it’s right there.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

"In what way would you call it a win for anything except hypocrisy?"

The "it" being the Clinton Impeachment.

That's from my original commnet and you didn't answer it.

Explain in detail why she should be grateful for having her name smeared and being turned into a joke.

[–] TaterTot@piefed.social 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I think you two might be talking past each other.

vzqq never claimed Bill was held sufficiently accountable, or held accountable at all for that matter. They stated a belief that there should be accountability for that kind of thing, which you clearly agree with. That's probably why they didn't engage your comment. They never claimed anything was a win, so they didn't see how your point applied. Which honestly, it kinda didn't.

So when you brought up Monica being treated far worse than Bill, they read it as "the people who attacked Monica were worse than her sexual predator of a boss." Stripped of the context you made it in, and given they already agreed Bill should have been held accountable, they assumed you must be contesting something else. Their interpretation of which was a stretch, their own shock at it probably should have tipped them off, but they were pretty clearly just confused by then.

Sorry for the diatribe. I just hate watching two people who agree argue over a misunderstanding, especially when the ethics they both hold are fundamentally sound.

[–] vzqq@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 4 days ago

I said no such thing.

Also, I’m going to block you now because you bore me.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 7 points 4 days ago

Why are you arguing with him when you're agreeing with him. Act normal, please.

[–] JoeyJoeJoeJr@lemmy.ml 19 points 4 days ago

Clinton bombed a medicine factory based on weak/nonexistent evidence it was making nerve gas.

Obama used drone strikes ten time more than Bush, to the point he felt comfortable making a joke about drone striking the Jonas Brothers.

I'm not trying to "both sides" this. The two sides are not equal. But this type of post, that tries to pretend one side has no scandals, only makes the other side stronger. People see things like this and dig their heels in. They (justifiably) criticize things like this for not being impartial, and dismiss the people posting them as untrustworthy/unreliable.

We shouldn't be playing these games. If you want to take them down, steelman them, and show that even at their best, they're worse.

Abraham Lincoln didn’t free the slaves Slaves fought for their rights and freed themselves.

Lincoln is the most pro-black president in history and it's not close. His personal prejudice and treatment of Natives are irrelevant to the fact that emaciation being a war goal was his decision and wasn't inevitable. It's easy to see how a lesser president (like Johnson) would've made peace with an intact slaver society.

If you want to argue who the formally enslaved have to thank for their emancipation, I'd argue that the Confederates are the proximate cause. It was the slavers who started the rebellion that forced the issue. It was the slavers fighting for slavery that conjured fatal opposition that didn't exist before.

I don't want to minimize the struggle enslaved people faced. But only a tiny number of enslaved or formally enslaved people even participated in the war. They certainly didn't rise up and overthrow slavery.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 4 days ago

Yeah, I still hold Obama accountable for the Disposition Matrix, escalating mass surveillance and not confronting the police state even after Ferguson.

But these things all empowered the right to abuse those same institutions even more. Obama presumed they wouldn't be abused more extremely by Republicans, despite what we saw with George W. Bush bending norms.

And then, after Trump's first term, Biden failed to dismantle any of those systems, leaving them in power for Trump 2.0

[–] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago

I found an infographic a number of years ago that listed the numbers of indictments & convictions by each presidential administration since Nixon. I think over 90% were Republicans.

[–] Trampampoline@sh.itjust.works 15 points 4 days ago

Fuck every President. If they didn't cause poverty and inequality, they were courteous enough to ignore/allow it. I'm never convinced any act of humanitianism isn't a grab for nearly free advertisement.

so everyone just sucks, then?

Unironically - yes. The slave owners that started this doomed hell aren't special or different because their worldview predates modern fascism, and in some cases, they inspired it.

.ml: YEAH!

Fuck .ml too. I hate fake-communism as much as I hate fake-democracy.

.ml: aw, fuck

Hating anyone who has an (R) after their name is nearly as bad as loving anyone who has an (R) after their name. I've never heard Abraham Lincoln called a "sleaze" of all things. You're going to lose most people on that one.

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 22 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Especially when, by the standards of that time, Democrats were also generally responsible for slavery, the Civil War, and a century of segregation to follow.

You just can't compare politics from 150 years ago to politics today.

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago (3 children)

But... my shrieking rage that all who came before me were literally Hitler! What will I do without it? Screaming at people online that they're stupid and wrong and also literally Hitler if they don't agree with my Righteous Rightness is all I have. :/

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I mean, I think the world needs more people who are trying to be Righteously Right about things than ones who dgaf and just take what they want, even if the righteousness can be a bit exhausting sometimes

Fuck ®, ©, and ™ !

But seriously, when you go that far back in time it's important to make a distinction between "Republicans" and "conservatives." Conservatives have always been terrible, but Republicans haven't always been conservative.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

Hating anyone who has an (R) after their name is called paying attention.
