Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

I noticed it happened on my phone as well. I switched to a desktop mode, and if still showed up. Interesting.

Honestly? Good.

The sooner the world moves on from ever using Reddit again, the better.

For old threads with useful posts, there's the Wayback Machine from the Internet Archive and several browser extensions that enable using it with Reddit seamlessly.

For everything else it provided, there are now far better alternatives.

I can't imagine why anyone would sign up for an account site unseen.

[–] stormwyrm67@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Yeah, I do hope that lemmy becomes the next thing and we could finally do "lemmy {my issue}" to get the solution to anything. Though, it may take reddit becoming straight up unusable and forcing everyone to ID verify.

[–] harmbugler@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I’m not sure Lemmy needs the spotlight.

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

It's not about what Lemmy needs, it's about what the world needs - alternative to corporate services.

[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 days ago

What's the process for.getting to that point?

[–] Iusedtobeanalien@lemmy.world 40 points 3 days ago

Their goal is not to maintain great content but to make as much profit as possible

It's run by cunts for cunt reasons

@laurenceOfSuburbia it seems they did (old Reddit too)

I just got this today and didn’t realize it’s been an issue people been having for two weeks.

thank god I have ublock origin so I can bypass this shit but frankly maybe it’s about time everyone just moved to lemmy or back to smaller forums.

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Only a matter of time until they figure out how to do a proper paywall, I reckon..

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

People will not pay one penny for things so that would be the immediate death of the entire operation.

[–] crimsonfall@mas.to 3 points 1 day ago

@naught101 i mean when that happens, for sure Reddit will die off

they might have gotten away with it during their api restrictions a few years back but this one will have everyone peeped off for sure

at least that’s my hope anyway

[–] laurenceOfSuburbia@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I think I really got into lemmy finally.
Photon client https://phtn.app/ for desktop, boost for lemmy on mobile - works really fucking good.
No ads, I can finally use a normal android app too, have not been able to for reddit since they shut down rif.

[–] stormwyrm67@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Mobile forces to install the app, web don't work no more, old reddit slowly getting removed...

[–] JigglySackles@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

They also show the cringiest snoo wearing a fedora image if they detect a VPN.

[–] speaksintv@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Oh damn I thought it just hit me on desktop where I only use reddit still. Are they that desperate to save their stock price as to force people to log in? I can't create a new account as they get banned but my wife absolutely 100% reads reddit and will not use an account. That's some anti-consumer shit if I've ever seen it.

[–] laurenceOfSuburbia@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] athatet@lemmy.zip 13 points 3 days ago

Kind of a useless link when you think about it.

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 27 points 3 days ago (3 children)

yup started getting this forced signup/login this morning without using a VPN on my home network. old.reddit still works for now but you can't look at anything on regular reddit anymore.

end of an era I guess.

[–] laurenceOfSuburbia@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago

holy... fuck... so it is real - they are going login only

[–] Thassodar@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I mainly get it when looking as at a thread on my phone, but when I go desktop mode I no longer get the login pop-up. In mobile mode, though, it is unavoidable.

[–] Redjard@reddthat.com 1 points 2 days ago

Sounds like A/B rollout, just like on old.reddit.
Easy way to reduce chances of some movement forming, very common strategy for unpopular changes.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

old.reddit does force a login when I am on VPN, interestingly.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This probably means it's in an A/B testing period.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yeah, that's what I figured. I may have even got hit with it once off a VPN, while on mobile 5G, but I can't say that for sure.

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 3 points 3 days ago

yeah for me it's hit or miss with my vpn. sometimes it'll force a login, sometimes it won't.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Was a matter of time.

I despite, DESPISE how the mobile Reddit page freezes my entire mobile browser to try and get me to log in, after like a 10 second timer. It freezes the whole browser, it forces full screen and disables touch input outside the login; I literally have to close and restart the app.

If that isn’t malware, I don’t know what is.

[–] ghodawalaaman@programming.dev 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

not encouraging anyone to use reddit but if you must then use Nora SNS, it removes some of these annoyances

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Nora SNS

That is an amazing looking rec, thanks. Trying it this second. This is why I come to Lemmy!

EDIT: Wow. How has this app flown under the radar? Well, I know how, but still.

[–] speaksintv@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Wow I just hit this too. Admittedly I still hop on reddit since Lemmy can "run out" of content from time to time (or maybe I'm new with few communities idk).

Anyways, after they banned my 14 year account, then immediately some old alt accounts, took away old reddit without an account, and now THIS? I mean this is over the top. They're saying NO ONE anywhere can read reddit on desktop (coming soon to mobile!) without an account?

They must be desperate to up DAU. I don't think I've ever created an account just to piss away time on a website.

[–] enchanted@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Was the final nail in the coffin for me. Blocked Reddit via DNS house-wide so there's no chance I accidentally visit them again.. Can be annoying since so many answers are there, but as others have said extensions + wayback machine solve that. The block had reduced my frustration level considerably though, I have no regrets.

[–] laurenceOfSuburbia@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I would only use reddit login to scrape data from reddit and map to lemmy communities for automatic content reposting:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lemmy-deep-lighthouse/

[–] zecg@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

Fucking finally, it's a zombie for years

[–] Krusty@quokk.au 3 points 2 days ago

Clear you cache.

[–] verifiedbyme@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It’s not the first time. One of the latest rounds brought me here :)

[–] laurenceOfSuburbia@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

same. switched after they started fucking around with mobile firefox - I called it quits. enough is enough.

any subreddits in missing - ill just gonna create my own lemmy community and sync data : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lemmy-deep-lighthouse/

[–] Kirk@startrek.website 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Is this a mobile web? I just tested this on desktop and I didn't get it, but this popup has been around on their mobile web version for a few years now (before I switched to Lemmy, at least).

[–] laurenceOfSuburbia@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

nope. regular desktop chrome browser - on fedora linux. ive been seeing it on firefox mobile for a while. no longer using reddit on mobile

Absolutely zero problem accessing it here? Haven't had an account for many years.
But the interface is absolute crap, it looks almost void of content compared to how reddit used to work.
Apparently the new layout is designed for simpletons?

Edit:
Same problem here now, it just takes a little while before the popup shows.

There's still a chance that your residential subnet has been used by residential-ip VPNs. Other than that, dunno. Does old. work?

[–] laurenceOfSuburbia@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's probably an A/B testing. Some people are not allowed to browser not-logged in and some are, then they check how much it affects engagement or bounce-rate or smt.

[–] glockenspiel@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

It's exactly this. And no matter how much one wants to reframe this (or hold out hope it isn't implemented), the die has already been cast. The very fact that this ever made it out of early discussions should tell everybody it's the end of reddit for them.

I don't know how many communities this has to happen with before the message sinks in: gatekeeping can be good, and it needs to be done more often. Because the moment an entity, like Reddit, can replace its original core audience with drama-chasing slop consumers, it's over.
