As of either yesterday or maybe the day before, I've had issues connecting to lemmy.ml from VPN servers (Proton VPN) that are hosted in Finland. I was able to reach the website from some other countries' servers.

I've been too tired to do some testing before, so I did some today. I tested a few countries that are somewhat close to me:

Work: Sweden, Estonia, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany

Don't work: Finland, Norway, Russia

Didn't test other countries yet, but maybe this will be enough to investigate the issue.

Gotta be an issue with proton, probably blocking ml domains. We don't block any vpns on this server, or run any spying middlemen like cloudflare.

If that was the case, how can I open those domains and countries (I could only test one don't-work-country) in question with Proton? Also the user says in the comments it can still ping with the terminal ping command, but the browser cannot open it.

So we can exclude Lemmy as the source of problems. Proton seems not to be the source of problems, but cannot be ruled out. It could be a library or something else that sits in between browsers and needs to be updated or like that? It's really hard to say.

That’s surprising. AFAIK, lemmy.ml doesn’t intentionally block any VPNs, though I don’t sysadmin it, so I don’t know for sure.

I doubt it matters, but lemmy.ml is hosted in France.

i switched to france and my discord stopped working lol.

maybe it's something on proton's side.

germany still works for both lemmy.ml and discord, sweden stopped working with .ml

I only use Free version of Proton VPN. Just tried Norway:Oslo and it works fine for me. At least refreshing https://lemmy.ml/ page connects to it fine. Also tried in terminal ping lemmy.ml and following countries: Canada, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Switzerland, United States. These are the Free ones and work fine.

Do you still have a problem connecting with Norway? Does ping lemmy.ml connect?

Comment edit historySorry, I corrected the ping commands, it should be just lemmy.ml, not https://lemmy.ml/

i get "ping: https://lemmy.ml/: Name or service not known" on Fedora Linux when trying to connect from Norway

edit: "ping lemmy.ml" works fine

edit2: i use the paid version of proton vpn

oops my bad, I actually meant ping lemmy.ml. The url with https was when I copied it to open new tab in the browser. I will edit the reply to correct that, so that nobody who tries it think its broken.

So... ping works for you, but your browser cannot connect? On my part my browser and ping can connect with Norway (or any other country for that matter). Can you test that with a different browser if you have any other installed?

i normally use librewolf, i tried firefox and it still can't reach the website through the norway server

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's weird. I use Firefox and can connect. In fact I am here responding with Norway:Olso (NO-FREE#4) server. Can you try this exact same server, that is clearly working for me?

[–] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 days ago

i can't use the free servers on a paid proton account and i'm not sure if i'm allowed to make another account

in the US and my (paid) proton VPN is working just fine via wireguard on linux for lemmy.
