Steamdecks really has done wonders for linux gaming

[-] rescue_toaster@lemmy.zip 105 points 1 month ago

Windows has also done wonders for Linux gaming.

[-] xylol@leminal.space 43 points 1 month ago

And surprisingly Linus the YouTube guy lately. My cousin randomly messaged me a week or so ago asking how to install cachyos because he saw the YouTube videos Linus tech tips did, I almost teared up

[-] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 month ago

I have a friend who was very anti Linux for years (even banned it from the office that me and network engineer were using) and he texted me the other day to say he’s happily gaming in cachyOS.

Said his final straw was the LG monitor thing but now I’m wondering if he still watches LTT.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago

I thought the whole point of proton is you wouldn't need to support it.

[-] binarytobis@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago

Sometimes the game runs fine in Proton but there are a couple of small things that don’t work right. The dev could probably iron out the kinks on their end. Usually games just run fine for me.

I will say, Valve needs to fix the Steam overlay in Proton because for some reason the text is so tiny on my 1440 monitor that I literally can’t read it. Give me a UI scale option.

I managed to install a heavily modded version of Fallout 4 with Fallout London through non-steam .exe’s with Proton, so at this point I’m convinced it can handle anything.

[-] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Weird, I run 1440p as well. Using Proton vs actual Windows has exactly zero apparent difference for me.

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 month ago

Maybe they mean support it in the sense they will enable comparability layers for any anti cheat? I am not familiar with this game or whether they use AC or not; just giving a plausible example of what support may look like.

Also keeping your game proton compatible is still technically "supporting" it.

Sometimes updates break compatibility and I've seen devs release patches to unbork their game.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago

The application almost certainly runs. It's the anti-cheat that causes issues 99.99% of the time at this point. It relies on certain things being available in the system, and it needs special support to work on Linux (and some features won't work, like having kernel level access to read memory).

If you're using a mainstream AC solution, they've already done most of the work. It often just needs to be enabled and rebuilt with Linux support turned on. If it's custom, then there's a lot more to do.

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

because usually its the proton team that finds what causes any issue and fixes it in the next update or two.

but if the games dev is actively working on proton, then the compatibility will be better and fewer issues for the proton team to deal with.

[-] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 3 points 1 month ago

It is. I'm a bit confused by that as well.

Of they're doing "Proton support" why not just make a Linux version.

[-] draco_aeneus@mander.xyz 29 points 1 month ago

Because properly packaging/distributing your game is hard. Maintaining a build environment, running tests, having unique deliverables, it all adds effort. With Proton specifically, it's a much lower effort to report. If there is a linux specific bug, it's fine, because Linux isn't officially supported, it's just known to work with Proton. You also only need to ship one binary file (the Windows build), so you don't have to adjust or alter any processes.

This may not be the reason they do it, but there are real reasons.

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

So essentially they're offloading the work they'd do themselves to the developers of Wine, Proton, and ProtonGE.

I wonder if they contribute a donation to these projects.

[-] four@lemmy.zip 23 points 1 month ago

They sell the game on Steam, Valve gets a cut, so Proton funding should be covered.

But I agree that we should donate to open source projects!

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 1 month ago

I hope they donate to Wine then

[-] ysjet@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

iirc, valve employs people to contribute to wine.

[-] draco_aeneus@mander.xyz 2 points 1 month ago

You'll have to ask them. Maybe you should, and maybe they'll consider it. If you don't ask, it's much less likely they'll think of it themselves.

[-] vapeloki@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

Valve does not recommend that anymore.

And for good reasons:

Nearly all Linux native games I have from steam do not work any more. Glibc changes. Xorg gone. Other stuff. You would need to maintain and adopt constantly.

Having a product that advertises native Linux support on the storefront but requires Ubuntu 20.04 is nothing we or valve could want

Proton offers a stable surface, and decouples the dependencies

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Don't we have Flatpak as a solution to this? Why don't developers or Valve make use of Flatpaks for Linux native games? Or is there a licensing issue?

[-] vapeloki@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Not really, no. Flat packs still need the host GPU, kernel driver and more.

I sometimes build software and opensource is easy for Linux. "Just compile once for fedora 40,41,42 and 4 Ubuntu versions, look how to build for Debian because the compiler there is 8 years old and then do that for very major update. Forever

[-] minfapper@piefed.social 10 points 1 month ago

Honestly, the Linux ecosystem is so fragmented that Win32 is the best API for targeting Linux.

[-] vogi@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Actually good question as they apparently are using an altered version of unreal engine (https://www.wardynamics.com/) UE has linux support, but maybe that got lost in the changed version.

[-] Anberibaburia@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Default voice chat stuff in ue is windows only so would need to be redone from scratch (if they using that).

[-] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Games are typically made once, given a few patches, then abandoned. They will not keep chasing Linux dependencies forever so things break all the time. Windows is more stubborn about backward compatibility.

This looks pretty fun tbh

[-] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 month ago

Hopefully there comes a point when native Linux builds become more common, versus asking all Linux users to play with a performance penalty.

[-] jerakor@startrek.website 5 points 1 month ago

If M$ releases a dx13 where the api is worse and the primary feature is copilot integration we might see more vulkan native games. So far they have been smarter than that...

[-] SirActionSack@aussie.zone 4 points 1 month ago

The success of Proton has pretty much killed native Linux builds

[-] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 4 points 1 month ago

Tbh I've always has better luck with Proton versus native builds.

And it is true that performance via Proton can be better than on Windows, so it isn't accurate that there is a performance penalty. In my experience it's usually the opposite. Shader precaching is one major reason.

[-] black0ut@pawb.social 6 points 1 month ago

Windows is so bad that running a windows game through proton on linux can generally be faster. However, running the game natively on linux should be even faster than using proton. If companies cared about linux, we could have even more performance than we already do.

[-] minfapper@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

There's not really a performance penalty for Proton. It isn't an emulator (Wine Is Not An Emulator); rather it's a translation layer. It translates the machine code into something your system understands and runs it natively. It isn't creating a fake version of the hardware that runs it, like an emulator does. In fact, Proton sometimes has a performance increase because of the translation. It translates to Vulkan, which is often more performant.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

That‘d be great if it‘s got good gameplay. I‘d like to move away from EA‘s Battlefield. I‘ve tried a few other games but they don‘t quite cut it.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

I honestly can't stand Battlefield after playing Squad. I mostly played Squad for a more casual Mil Sim replacement (after not wanting to deal with weekly mandatory hours-long missions with my Arma realism unit, where briefing alone was a good half hour). However, it also pretty much killed any desire I had for Battlefield. It's largely just because of how communal it is. There's a lot more chatting and just hanging out.

Still, I've been watching this game for months now. It seems cool. I'm signed up for testing, but then I read it doesn't support Linux, so I'm out until that's finished, but I did write something asking for Linux support.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I played Squad briefly. It’s one of the few games I ever asked Steam for a refund. Slow, clunky, physics were almost non-existent, poor sound…it was like playing a half-finished BF3 mod. Plus I gave a personal bone to pick with the creators, IIRC they’re the Project Reality modders ftom BF. No desire to support them.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

It doesn't have the budget of Battlefield/EA, so obviously it's not going to be as pretty or sound as good. That's a silly expectation, and if that's what you want from games then fine, stick with AAA only.

When did you play though? Vehicle physics have been overhauled and are significantly better. It's still not perfect, as there is no such thing as perfect in game development, but it's pretty good now.

Yes, the studio spawned from Project Reality, though to say they're the same thing now is not really the case. That was many years ago, and the studio has changed a lot since. Why would that be an issue anyway?

If you're interested in this style of game though, Bellum is being worked on and it seems to be setting itself up to be good. It's currently only infantry, and it's significantly more teamwork oriented. No arcadey one-man-army stuff.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It would have been 3 years ago or so at least for the game.

And my reasons are valid enough. The PR team threatened lawsuits against multiple modding communities back in the day. I have no reason to support people like that.

I would like to be a day 1 purchase if they can make it compatible. Very exciting!

[-] warmaster@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Great news!

I hope it doesn't end up with predatory IAPs.

[-] silentjohn@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

How will the anticheat work? Most games work decently well on proton, but the anticheat is what really breaks these games on linux.

[-] ysjet@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

Anticheats work fine on linux, the devs generally just have to check a box enabling linux support in the anticheat.

Beancounters don't like that, because linux doesn't let some random program have deeper access to your computer than you yourself have.

[-] silentjohn@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

I didn't realize it was literally a switch, I thought it had something to do with the architecture of the OS and anticheat programs weren't compatible.

[-] LwL@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It does. The switch in some anticheats is to just not require that on linux. Also not all anticheats are kernel-level in the first place.

[-] fhein@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

I suspect people are thinking about a statement from a game developer who said that enabling EAC support for a Proton is just a checkbox. But I'm fairly sure that only exists because the EAC developers have made a version specifically for Proton. Wardogs uses EAC so it's all good, but it's not generally true for all anti-cheats.

[-] ysjet@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Specifically, it's that linux doesn't allow someone a gilded-path method to ursurp control of your computer like windows does. The 'switch' in this case is turning off where it tries to, effectively, hack your computer to give control of it to the company installing the anti-cheat. We have a name for that type of program- it's called a rootkit, and it's a major security vulnerability that game companies are trying to rebrand so they can save money on client-side anti-cheat instead of spending money on server-side anti-cheat.

For the record, it's a losing battle- client side anticheat will NEVER be reliable- it literally can't, because at the end of the day you still physically have your computer.

[-] Toga77@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Now I am officially beyond excited for this game. I can't stand going back to windows
