What the fuck are we doing

This sketch is funny and everything, but I feel this part in my fucking soul.

I don't use PowerPoint and I never ask my employees to either. It is a massive waste of time.

The day I'm so lazy and stupid that I need to be fed information like a baby bird, I will just go walk out in front of a bus.

[-] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

how would you communicate information and questions with screenshots and simple graphics? what's the better way?

word docs are, well, done in Word. enough said.

plain text doesn't have graphics

PowerPoint is a simple slideshow tool to put info into one file without using multiple tools. certainly saves us a ton of time because we can just fire off a power point that took somebody 45 minutes to make (30 of which was finding and documenting the concerns and would have to happen anyways) instead of put a dozen people into a meeting and force an on the spot answer. and then we get written responses, so we don't have to separately document a decision being made.

edit: I guess I should add the context that I'm not in the line of work that the meme is addressing. I'm in an engineering related field, and my meetings and discussions are not businessy things. they're technical

[-] Rolive@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 week ago

Also it's absolutely infuriating to work with. I don't use it often so every time I open it every button menu option whatever is in a different spot. Also if you don't do it in a VERY specific way your layout goes apeshit, just like Word.

Only to spend a lot effort on it hoping to please whatever expectations the viewers have to then realize that nobody cares and forgets your presentation the moment it ends.

Fuck everything about it.

[-] bizarroland@lemmy.world 39 points 1 week ago

Yeah, and then there's the follow-up thought that goes, oh yeah, I guess I'm actually privileged to be in this group of people.

[-] Donkter@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago

Yeah the stark reminder that at any point you could choose not to live like this, it's just your quality of life would suffer.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago

I want to tie a cinder block to my foot and jump off a bridge. I'll bet some asshole made an acronym for that too.

[-] cannibalkitteh@piefed.blahaj.zone 33 points 1 week ago

Believe it or not, part of the agile framework.

[-] bizarroland@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

But surprisingly close to the waterfall as well

[-] Omega_Jimes@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

First job I've ever had that didn't involve being at heights in winter, or dealing with poo (animal, human) or both.

I'm not a fan of the slide shows, but I also didn't like hustling homeless people smoking crack in the toilet stalls or dragging wire through crusty old crawl spaces filled with dead animals. "Okay lady, your oven should work now without blowing a breaker, also, you had a whole family of raccoons, now you have what I guess they'd call a crypt.".

If humanity just chilled, imagine what life could be

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

You know what I'm saying? If everyone agreed to live as one huge ass village in the galaxy, and just shared the vast resources we have on this planet. Life would be such bliss for everyone.

[-] turtlesareneat@piefed.ca 28 points 1 week ago

I got laid off right as I was having surgery last year, so I went to a few job interviews in a panic, on painkillers. At one point they were like "What do you think about XYZ" and whatever the acronym was, I had never even heard it. So I just looked around and said, "Acronyms, eh?" and laughed. And everyone else laughed, except one guy who realized I was bluffing, and that got super awkward real quick. But for a second, we all really connected over how fucking stupid it was. (MSP job for which I am grateful not to have)

[-] topherclay@lemmy.world 41 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

MSP = Microsoft Paint

for those who were also wondering.

[-] deacon@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport actually

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

Minimal Stupid Product achtually.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

Massively Stupid Plan, which applies to most of them.

[-] flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

Or it could be: Managed service provider.

Generally a shitty vendor that hates the customer and vice versa

[-] Schmoo@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

For anyone who doesn't know, MSP stands for Managed Service Provider, which is basically an independent contractor IT company that stands in for businesses' internal IT department if they're not big enough (or can't be bothered) to have their own.

Next time they reference XYZ and acronym, say "Fun Fact, that's technically not an acronym. An acronym is when the letters spell something like NASA or PIN. when you say the letters it's called initialism."

maybe you are different. maybe you tie that lanyard to your belt loop.

[-] caurvo@aussie.zone 5 points 1 week ago

Good news.

The latest newsletter has a QR code where you can get free counseling from a new (presumably AI-based) partner.

It's okay, it only lasts about 40 years.

The window is over there, but they're permanently sealed, after...The Incident.

[-] Sibshops@lemmy.myserv.one 5 points 1 week ago

That's because the one engineer in the room will have it done by next week.

[-] TheJesusaurus@piefed.ca 5 points 1 week ago

And I've sat through a thousand of them

[-] Etterra@discuss.online 4 points 1 week ago

That's a great chance to practice disassociation.

[-] village604@adultswim.fan 3 points 1 week ago

Dissociation*

I used to get it wrong all the time.

[-] Etterra@discuss.online 2 points 1 week ago

You are correct, thanks.

[-] darthelmet@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I’m gonna need to have those TPS reports on my desk by Saturday, M’kay?

[-] Cytobit@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

Lanyards? What the fuck is this referencing?

[-] x00z@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

In a lot of companies you get your identification or door access knob on a lanyard.

[-] DamoclesDurden@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

Conventions, trade shows, insert large format corporate meeting here.

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

am i the only person who never has these types of meetings?

[-] CalypsoGirl@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

But he's clearly not in a room full of adults wearing matching lanyards discussing a PowerPoint presentation that will be forgotten by Tuesday. He's laying in bed with his front-facing camera capturing himself from the least flattering angle possible.
