Quick post today, readers may remember that in the last post that the 112 test was today, so i hope you all set your alarms for this post!

imsd emergency calling works! end to end tested on the live network!

I called 112 in the designated time slot and had full two way voice with the operator, plus NAW data, sadly the AML did not work.

The Netherlands doesn't use the text based AML my code had, ive send an email thanking them for the test and requesting information on the data based AML aswell as a possibility for a future second test when that works.

I do have to say that i can only say this works for the netherlands, i can tell the emergency path works in the modem and it took the genuine correct path, i can't guarantee it. I'm not sure what the risk is that it works here but not elsewhere but i think its right to state this.

Before doing the first test i was so nervous with my phone hovering the call button but im glad it all worked out in the end, the operators were really kind too.

On the slight chance that any 112 operators happen to read this, Thank you very much!

I actually use the m-dash, when on my desktop. When using KDE it's "alt gr + -" in the German keyboard layout.

Took a look and the layout seems to have hyphen and en dash—default—for Alt Gr + - and Alt Gr + Shift + -, respectively, on both my regular layout and the German layout on my machine (added the German layout just to check). I wound up using the compose sequence of three dashes, but would prefer something with fewer strokes (and may do something about it—maybe).

Awesome! Did you test this without a SIM inserted as well?

How does the test work? Do you give them their number or do they just allocate you in a slot where they think not much is going on anyway?

Really cool that they are doing this.

No i have not tried without a SIM, and im not sure that is possible

When asking for the test you need to provide the number you're calling with, a SIM-less phone doesn't have a number.

Maybe there is an option for it if you ask specifcally for a SIML-less test, but i had to provide a number.

I gave them the information and the date i wanted and they responded with this:

Beste Jorijn,

De testtijdvakken zijn van 9:15 en 10:15 of 13:30 en 14:15.

Graag hoor ik van je welk testtijdvak je wilt gebruiken.

Translation:

Dear Jorijn,

The test time slots are 9:15 and 10:15 or 13:30 and 14:15.

Please let me know which test time slot you'd like to use.

I don't know how they got those slots, but pretty much yes, i gave them the info and they let me pick a slot.

I assume they get some sort of identifier/metadata in emergency calls (IMSI?) in case no SIM is available?

They could see the IMEI maybe? Maybe you ment that.

Donno about rest of the world but in EU mobile phones are required to not offer emergency calls without SIM cards. Phones or operators. Don’t remember. That’s due to way too many fake calls and problems with tracking them down.

I can only go by what my government tells me but I don't think that's true:

Der Europäische Notruf ist überall in der EU gebührenfrei verfügbar. [...] Die Nummer kann im Notfall selbst bei gesperrtem Mobiltelefon – ohne Netzvertrag, SIM-Card, PIN oder Guthaben – kostenfrei gewählt werden.

Translation:

The European emergency number is available free of charge everywhere in the EU. [...] The number can be dialed free of charge on a locked phone - without contract, SIM, PIN or credit.

Not that I regularily call them but my phone still shows "Emergency calls only" when no SIM is inserted.

Until 10 years ago it was totally possible. The emergency operator could see your IMEI, that you had no SIM, and which antenna was giving you coverage, but the network wouldn't deny you the call. It was possible to get a legit 112 call that looked like it had no SIM because the phone had suffered damages during whichever accident prompted the call.

Actually the 112 service used to brag about being able to get your call in the most miserable scenarios.

SIM card in EU doesn’t need to be active. It’s enough to have one inside that was activated in the past.

what is NAW and AML?

NAW is the data the operator can get from the phone number, static data from the carrier subscription. It's dutch for name, address, city.

AML is Advanced Mobile Location, a standard that allows your phone to send the GPS coordinates to the operator.

If I have understood correctly, it is only sent when you place an emergency call.

I think your concern should be more about the carriers sharing cell association data with them - as long as the phone is on, that can be used to track location pretty accurately.

But a toggle would be nice, I agree.
