One thing we should understand by now is that opinion polling, especially hypothetical choices, does not measure voting likelihood.

[-] farmgineer@nord.pub 2 points 1 day ago

There are ~2.25 years until we vote on the next president. So much can happen in the interim. What value do polls like this even have to anyone not directly on the entrants' teams?

[-] brownsugga@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Forgot to point out this is IF we have an election in 2028 at all

[-] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 66 points 2 days ago

The fact that 44% of voters are glad to elect another Republican regardless of the Democratic opposition after how much of Project 2025 has been enacted already demonstrates that even in 50 years the U.S. probably won't be as liberal as the EU is now.

[-] SciencyScientist@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

I don't know if you can say the EU is liberal. The liberal EPP only holds 182 out of 720 seats in the European Parliament, for example. It seems in the US the term liberal is often used to indicate leftwing as well, but on (most of) the European political spectrum liberals are solidly rightwing and often fairly conservative on top of that.

[-] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

'Liberal' in general U.S. political usage is a catch-all term for the left; when being more specific, one can also distinguish 'Progressive' as being those further to the left.

My point was that many of the goals of democratic socialism in the U.S. are policies that are already widespread in the EU.

[-] stormeuh@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Widespread but being dismantled as we speak.

While the general public is not as indoctrinated to hate socialism as in the US, they are still (being made) resistant to preserving or expanding the welfare state. Every time cuts are made to social programmes, (conservative) people will say "we should be grateful with what we get" and "well we can't afford to keep paying for that", especially if it's cuts in another country that "has it better". The media are an active and gleeful participant in this, constantly running stories about "OMG we are running a deficit" and "how are we going to afford to pay for pensions?", manufacturing consent all the way. Finally, the EU and ECB also play their role as boogeymen by reprimanding states who run deficits, which national politicians then use as an excuse to cut social spending, instead of cutting military spending or taxing the wealthy.

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

This this this.

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 1 day ago

This is so stupid, if anything the whole "freedom" thing is liberal, and leftist is more state control so "less liberal".

Gotta muddy the waters eh.

[-] hovercat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago

It's also worth nothing that the number of people willing to identify as Republican has been dropping precipitously. I'd like to see the same poll, but with Independents added in the mix.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 days ago

This poll includes independents.

[-] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

It's like we've learned fucking nothing. Racist fucking morons are always gonna find a reason they were never wrong and then make the same stupid fucking decisions all over again

[-] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 day ago
[-] solidheron@sh.itjust.works -2 points 1 day ago

What are you going to do about it?

[-] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 18 points 2 days ago

Don't trust these pools, unless you ask everyone you cannot predict what they are going to vote for

[-] Kodama@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

Here in germany we have "Sonntagsumfrage". They ask 1,000 people for which party they would vote for, if next Sunday would be the next election.

On election day one party got 10% more votes then the poll suggested. I would never trust such polls ever again.

[-] atro_city@fedia.io 24 points 2 days ago

AOC or bust in 2028, I guess

[-] inlandempire@jlai.lu 15 points 2 days ago

according to this poll aoc is the weakest opponent to republicans

This poll suggests Harris is a viable candidate.

[-] brownsugga@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago

Every Dem "candidate" on that list EXCEPT for AOC is basically a neoliberal, same as electing a republican

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, the super intelligent gay dude who talks about bolstering social programs, helping others, and oozes common sense every time he opens his mouth is the same as a Republican.

Lot of delusion on the internet these days.

Y'all better get over this AOC thing. It's amost assuredly not gonna happen.

[-] Vinkar@programming.dev 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

same as electing a republican

This is factually not true.

The AFL-CIO labor union has a scorecard to track politicians. Kamala Harris or Jon Ossoff voted every single bill improving labor rights or taxing the rich

https://aflcio.org/scorecard/legislators/kamala-harris

https://aflcio.org/scorecard/legislators/jon-ossoff

[-] brownsugga@lemmy.world -3 points 2 days ago

I wasn't attempting to state a fact

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Then why the fuck did your sentence structure make it sound like you were stating a fact? You literally said

same as electing a Republican

That kind of dumb shit gets other dumb people to think Dems and Republicans are actually the same, which is demonstrably false here in reality.

[-] brownsugga@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago

I'm just a dude on the internet, you shouldn't take anything I say as fact

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Then keep your opinions to yourself or make it clear your sentence staged as a fact is actually an opinion. Stupid people are easily influenced.

[-] brownsugga@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Looks like I influenced you plenty

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Influenced? Hardly. Idiots just make me mad. That's not influence.

[-] atro_city@fedia.io 10 points 2 days ago

100%. If AOC doesn't win, it'll just be an establishment or billionaire vote. Nothing will change

[-] huppakee@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

I want AOC to win, i really do, but I am all out of optimism by now.

[-] atro_city@fedia.io 7 points 2 days ago

The Epstein class does a good job of sucking up wealth and hope.

[-] andyburke@fedia.io 6 points 2 days ago

All they had to do was show you a picture and you're cooked?

Politics today....

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Nah. All I had to do was live in America for over 40 years to know AOC is probably cooked.

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works -1 points 2 days ago

Because there's nothing going on outside of establishment norms and economics - right?

[-] atro_city@fedia.io 2 points 2 days ago

lmao, wat? which kinda of people won the last presidential elections for the last decade and a half?

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago
[-] atro_city@fedia.io 0 points 1 day ago

You forgot the establishment candidate, but thank you. Now, explain to me again how anybody on that image besides AOC isn't going to be "settling", establishment or fascist.

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

'Why would I settle for boring liberalism when the alternative is concentration camps?,' asks time vampire certain they'll never be the next 'and then they came for.'

[-] atro_city@fedia.io -1 points 1 day ago

Buddy, I don't know what you're taking, if English is your second language or if you're an AI bot, because what you're saying makes no sense at all in relation to what I posted.

Maybe improve your reading comprehension first or change your underlying model, because you write like you're having a stroke.

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

You don't understand one simple sentence and the problem is my reading comprehension.

I shouldn't be surprised, when you don't understand the secret police are grabbing people off court steps and sending them to secret prisons and then random foreign countries, but you still think whining about "the establishment" would excuse a protest vote or nonparticipation.

[-] tlekiteki@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago

Poll aside, I guess that she would put Marco Rubioz token Latino appeal into an ugly contest. JD Vance, however, could inspire passion from the incel voting block.

[-] atro_city@fedia.io 2 points 2 days ago

Strong voting block.

[-] huppakee@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

Nice poll, but doesn't mean a thing. Right now i am willing to bet a large amount of money Trump will be the only Republican running for president.

[-] adhocfungus@midwest.social 13 points 2 days ago

Yeah, I was gonna ask why Trump isn't on here. The only way he's not running is if he croaks before the election. "But that's illegal" is very clearly not a concern for our government officials anymore. "Who's going to arrest me?" is all that matters now.

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

That might be true, but running polls about it only legitimizes the idea.

Also, if that ends up being the case, there's really no point pretending anyone else has a shot.

[-] adhocfungus@midwest.social 2 points 2 days ago

Those are good points.

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I think even he knows he is too old. Vance is clearly being set up to run.

Trump will play kingmaker until Vance's backers are done using Trump, I think.

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago

But the internet told me AOC was a shoe in. Just like it told me Bernie would be president.

Buttigieg is a gay guy and hasn't been in the news cycle and he's still polling better. At least in this poll.

Temper your expectations AOC fans. I don't want you guys crashing out like Bernie Bros are still doing to this day.

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Influence during actual elections will change this dramatically, once all their names get out and dirt flies.

I dont know how it will change, but I do know most Americans probably have superficial knowledge of all of them. History shows they'll vote on whatevers in their social media feed, not what they know now.
