A friend of mine was shocked when I offhandedly mentioned The Rock's likely steroid budget. "You think he uses steroids?!" she asked. This was during his monstrous peak years.

I'm also reminded of the reddit story where a guy's girlfriend or wife suggested that he go to the gym to get into slightly better shape. Nothing excessive, "maybe like Jason Momoa in Aquaman."

[-] Deadful@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Come on! You have to at least give the guy a farmer's tan or something! How is he ripped AND perfectly bronzed?

[-] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Hey, people in war movies can have perfectly coiffed hair in combat too.

[-] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

He grew up in a military family with an older brother so there were likely nasic fitness regimes available. Plus he spent his entire adult life in the Army. It's also been said his genetics are geared towards high metabolism and muscle density. I've known plenty of people who barely work out, don't exactly rat super healthy but they tend to look like a gym rat.

Reacher does walk a lot. And not just casually, he will walk for miles as a time across town and avoid busses/taxi unless he's traveling across states. Plus he tends to get into a lot of sticky situations he needs to fight and exert his way out of.

[-] Nalivai@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Walking for miles makes you the opposite of whatever this sculpted shit is, it's an endurance activity. In order to look like that you need to spend workdays in a gym doing specific gym things, it's a bodybuilder's body, not a walker's body or "occasionally has to fight random people in a parking lot" body

[-] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Maybe he walks on his arms

[-] SippyCup@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Does he walk with his abs??

The excessive walking was more to burn the fat as opposed to being sedentary.

[-] Nalivai@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, but it burns muscles at a comparable rate. Those things go away if you don't use them, very, very quickly.

I mean it's fiction. That part isn't half as unbelievable as the cops and feds being the good guys

[-] IWW4@lemmy.zip 82 points 3 days ago

Yeah Reacher is just fantasy. He eats like a pig, never has access to a shower and he is built like Mr Universe.

[-] dil@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago

Alan ritchsons always been big and claims he just consistently works out everyday and eats a lot, and he didn't work out that much before reacher was still pretty big, after season 1 he started taking testosterone I think if i remember correctly, he talks about it in interviews

[-] IWW4@lemmy.zip 0 points 4 hours ago

Thats cool and has nothing to do with what i posted.

[-] dil@lemmy.zip 1 points 46 minutes ago

He in real life doesn't work out as much as you think he would for his frame prereacher, he was low on testosterone to prior to it. Not that crazy to think reacher went from working out daily to once or twice a weak to avoid atroph. On screen he often does feets of strength that would equal maxing out on weights once a weak.

There’s this story that Mark Hammil tells about being on the set of Star Wars and he mentions to Harrison Ford that their hair should be wet, since it was just wet in the previous scene.

And Ford says something like, “This ain’t that kind of movie, kid. If the audience is talking about our hair, something has already gone wrong.”

The same goes for Reacher, even the books. They're great, easy and fun to read, but if you start thinking about it like that something has already gone wrong.

Even so, I have to say that the books concentrate more on him just being really tall without being thin. And trained both mentally and physically, but never just muscled.

Even so, I have to say that the books concentrate more on him just being really tall without being thin. And trained both mentally and physically, but never just muscled.

I don't recall which one, but he's shot in the chest by a small caliber revolver and his dense pectorals actually stopped the bullet.

[-] nogooduser@lemmy.world 43 points 2 days ago

He does have access to a shower. He stays at motels mostly and very rarely sleeps outside.

There’s no explanation for that body though as he definitely never goes to a gym.

[-] dil@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago

He doesn't have to goto the gym that often to mantain it, maybe like twice a weak, apparently 1 set to failure a week is enough to prevent hypertrophy so he can get that through the bs he goes through lifting heavy sht and climing.

[-] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

I'll have you know that Reacher cannot help his overactive steroid gland!

[-] monkeyslikebananas2@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

Um guys come on it is simple. he lives at the gym between seasons.

I mean, he isn't even remotely close to 300lbs of pure muscle. But yes, even with a lifetime of a perfect diet and gym routine most people will never look like this. Like is the case for so many other Hollywood actors, there are clearly steroids involved

This is just a trope everywhere and it's absurd. Like Project Hail Mary. Yep, a school physics teacher is chiseled and looks like a shaggy sex teddy bear dog. Just like every other physics teacher I've met. Yep.

[-] zerodawn@leaf.dance 58 points 2 days ago

In the case of Project Hail Mary they have an "answer" as to why. The book directly explains it and the movie nods at it in a scene where he writes "Muscles?" on the white board, but its the coma robot, Armindo. It was meant to work their limbs and apply electrical stimulation so they wouldn't atrophy on the trip.

[-] Initech_vs_Initrode@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Not only that, but when the main character wakes up at the start of the book, he is baffled as to why he's so muscular. I guess the problem with the movie is that he wasn't visibly skinnier during the classroom flashback scenes.

[-] zerodawn@leaf.dance 1 points 23 hours ago

The problem is they had a seven-ish hour pre cut, a four and a half hour directors cut, and the two and a half hour theatrical release. The original pass on the movie probably explains everything. If I'm being honest I'd gladly give up the karaoke scene for the 10 or so 30 second explanation scenes we could have had in it's place.

[-] Initech_vs_Initrode@lemmy.zip 1 points 20 hours ago

Yeah, I enjoyed the movie and thought it was a pretty decent adaptation, but it's still an adaptation of a hard sci-fi book for general audiences. The start of the book, where he's coming up with ways to figure out where he is, using Newtonian physics and common objects, was a ton of fun for nerds like me, but would be boring af for regular audiences.

It reminds me a bit of Contact. The book is amazing. Sagan explains how one might communicate with an alien intelligence, starting from the basics of detecting signals, to communicating basic logic and mathematics, to communicating engineering diagrams. Pretty much none of that was covered in the movie, but it was still a good adaptation.

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 25 points 2 days ago

So, I was watching 'The Getaway' with Steve McQueen. That movie was made when McQueen was one of the top box office draws in the world. He takes off his shirt and, to me, he looks a little scrawny.

A while later, I'm watching a movie where the shirtless guy is supposed to be a middle-aged lawyer with a minor drug problem. Looks like he could throw McQueen through the wall.

[-] GraniteM@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Harrison Ford went on an intensive regime of exercise with a famous fitness trainer in order to get into peak physical condition for Temple of Doom:

[-] Initech_vs_Initrode@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

If you watch the movie, you'll see his abdominal muscles as he's breathing heavily. Not disagreeing with you, just pointing out that his physique is a bit more impressive than what a single photo might indicate. Definitely not the modern, roided-up action star physique. I wonder if he was even getting pumped before shooting, like modern actors do.

Some other examples are Christopher Reeve as Superman, Tom Selleck as Magnum PI, and Erik Estrada as Ponch in CHiPs. All were seen as strong, fit leading men in the late 70s and early 80s. Schwarzenegger is probably the main reason that roided-up physiques became so mainstream, along with WWF/WWE. Both exploded in popularity around the early 80s.

Which is why I liked the original 2000 Wolverine where he looked grounded with his physique.

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

A friend told me that he wanted to buy his nephew a Luke Skywalker action figure; he wanted the lad to have the same one he'd grown up playing with.

When he went to the store, the figure they had was bulked up. Looked nothing like the real Mark Hamill.
