Juicio in that sense means "good sense" not judgement.

In this case yes. The meme has some truth in it, in that juicio can also mean trial or judgement - it's just that no one would interpret it like that in this context.

[-] calcopiritus@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Am Spaniard. I've always interpreted as trial/judgement. Maybe I'm just dumb. I haven't even though of "good sense" until reading this comment.

[-] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

Say that again

[-] pewpew@feddit.it 23 points 2 days ago

In italian it's literally "Judgement theeth"

[-] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

In Indonesian, it's "lastborn tooth".

Incidentally, we keep track of translations on Wiktionary, and we recently added a picture dictionary so you can see the names of the other teeth too. ^_^

Edit: Also, incisors in Japanese are "gate teeth", which I think is lovely.

[-] WagnasT@piefed.world 6 points 2 days ago

The root of the tooth do be looken kinda 🤌

[-] GottaHaveFaith@fedia.io 5 points 2 days ago

yeah but I think the meaning is still "good sense"

[-] DandomRude@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago

A friend of mine had six wisdom teeth. Does that mean he's especially wise or especially judgemental?

[-] Vandals_handle@lemmy.world 51 points 2 days ago

If in US, means dentist got a new yacht

[-] jsalvador@programming.dev 4 points 2 days ago

I was going to say that in Europe too, but at least in Spain, teeth of judgment can be removed by public healthcare.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 7 points 2 days ago

No, it means he's being judged for his sins.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I had that, so personally probably both

[-] Noodle07@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

My brother has none, spared him from getting them removed haha

[-] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 days ago

Dutch: verstandskies, translated to wisdom tooth as verstand means wisdom, but if you change the intonation, you get the real original word: ver-stands-kies, meaning far standing tooth. The English word wisdom tooth is a wrong translation of the Dutch.

[-] some_random_nick@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Wisdom tooth, one of the last four molar teeth to emerge on either side of the jaw, is so called by 1848 (earlier teeth of wisdom, 1660s, wit-tooth, c. 1600), a loan-translation of Latin dentes sapientiae, [...]

[-] Leviathan@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

So now I think the Dutch far standing tooth is a wrong translation of wisdom tooth.

[-] rotkehle@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago

in German it's also wisdom teeth. I'm wondering why that is now..

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Because they come in when you're an adult by old timey standards

[-] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 days ago

i had one of those bad boys insanely infected and the post-removal (surgery) pain was easily the worst i've ever experienced, and i've had my collarbone split in half from falling off a bicycle

[-] varden@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I've also split my collarbone in half falling off of a bicycle! Good times

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

On a scale of my worst surgeries infected wisdom tooth was absolutely the second most painful recovery. Fucking hell I wish opiates didn't give me hives

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

One of mine came in sideways like that. Shattered in my jaw eventually. Had it removed right before everything closed down from covid.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Holy fuck I didn't know they could shatter like that. Mine just kept hurting more and more

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

It was, we shall say, unpleasant! I was taking a nap back in 2019, and I suddenly wake up to spitting out shards. Go to my main dentist, she says "Yeah, you'll have to see our surgeon". Which takes a month. I see the surgeon. 5 minutes at most "Yeah we can't do that shit here, here's a referral." A week later, go in. "Yeah, we'll surgery you, probably late January. Maybe late February.

But what about the sharp pointy bits in my mouth? They got those rounded off so they wouldn't cut my mouth (the tooth wasn't fully still in my jaw, it had a tiny part through the gum).

What about pain? IDK. Didn't hurt, shockingly like that. For the surgery itself they only gave me the big ibuprofen after insinuating I was a druggy, then felt bad when I explained I just wanted the big ibuprofen cause taking a handful of small ones makes my stomach sick.

I could make that side of my jaw click which turns out. Jaws should not do that.

[-] randomdude@thelemmy.club 2 points 18 hours ago

yea why didn't i feel pain tho? i would have known abt it existing before it messes up my right side of the body and misaligned my atlas c1? if i just felt the pain, it wouldn't be late

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

No fucking idea about the pain! Human bodies suck and are weeeeiiiiiird!

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Oof, that sucks. I actually have the opposite problem with painkillers. I keep saying "I'm allergic to opiates" and getting offered them anyways.

And yeah I also have the jaw clicking that I need to speak to a dentist about

[-] TomMasz@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

I had all four of mine removed at once in the hospital, versus two at a time in the dentist's office. They hadn't broken the gums yet, which meant they'd have to do more than just pull them.

It was the right decision for me.

[-] randomdude@thelemmy.club 2 points 18 hours ago

same but mine gave me decending tmj and also bankruptcy :) all and all it was also the best decision to spend all my money on it.

[-] Boozilla@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

I did the same. The dental surgeon had giant football player sized hands which freaked me out at the time. I was too dumb to realize he likely used instruments with some reach.

[-] Iamaquantummechanic@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I have all four of them, and they came out normal. You guys are so weird.

[-] Boozilla@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

Tonsils, appendix, optic nerve vs retina, prostate...the human body is a hodgepodge of "just good enough" parts.

[-] aggelalex@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

In Greek they are also technically "wisdom" teeth, but that word in modern greek is mostly used for children when you tell em to be quiet and not troublesome. So it's pretty much the tooth of being nice. Technically the tooth of judgement.

[-] lagg_mine@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

In Dutch it's far standing teeth with just happens to be "wisdom" with a space in between

[-] Mim@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Little bastards Is what they are.

[-] Batman@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

What if we call them a toth/ multiple teth because they make the teeth too close together? Is this too many streets ahead?

[-] Jubei_K_08@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

It's las muelas del juicio because you get to judge how high your pain threshold is when they're removed 🥲

[-] albbi@piefed.ca 1 points 2 days ago

Explains the behaviour of the Spanish Inquisition.

[-] Vandals_handle@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Does that mean Spanish dentists have comfy chairs? :::
