I tried, over and over for more than twenty years, but I still hate it. Anything but Java, I'll even take COBOL with a rusty spoon instead.
If I have to target the JVM, Clojure > Kotlin > Scala >>>>>>>>>> Java.
Maturing is realizing that java is a good language that gits the job done and has great balance of simplicity, expressiveness and speed, and JVM is a very good ecosystem. The main issue is that it's owned by Oracle. But I guess it's better than google atleast.
I prefer Clojure on the JVM 10/10 tho.
Learning clojure in uni for AI (not the kind we call AI now though) was so much fun. I wish I had more reasons for me to have kept up with it.
Fully viable option today. I make money with it. And was never hired as a "Clojure dev" . We need to do X, I find that clojure is great for X, and start creating.
C# is just too easy for me now (which is also what I use at work) but maybe one day I'll have a hobby project I can use as a way to dip my toes back into clojure.
personally i prefer systems that support basic features like operator overloading, multiple inheritance, and unsigned integers
Great. Clojure does all of that, although it eliminates the need to use them often.

Kinda dead language outside of corporate maintenance. There's really no reason to use Java when Kotlin and all other flavors exist.
No not really. It combines the worst of all worlds. Working with it is a slog, and it's mostly used in shitty corporate jobs.

All of our chip vendor's code is in C, and it's fully certified, so the entire hardware integrity stack is C. Less flaky and far leaner than the C++ applications in the HLOS.

Java is weird and I don't like it. It's the go-to language to learn as a first programming language in school and university, but the kind of Java that is actually used in corporate jobs, with all the weird frameworks and libraries, is so far removed from school Java that it feels like a whole different thing. Maven is weird and confusing and I don't get it (but I'm perfectly fine with Php's Composer and JS npm/yarn). And I have yet to come across any sort of real life problem where OOP is a better solution than Functional Programming.
Java as first programming language? My first programming language in school was Terrapin/MS Logo (that thing with the turtle) and then Python, IIRC.
And yeah, Maven is an absolute pain. My last workplace used it and it makes me extra glad that I don't work there anymore.
I'm more partial to OOP, though. I just find it easier to organise data and functionalities by class/object and not make a mess that way, I guess. Plus, I mainly do gamedev/adjacent stuff these days, which largely seems to be object-oriented, at least when it comes to the most popular engines.

I'm not entirely sure what you want to say, but Gradle utilizes Maven repositories.
So if you need to use maven, consider not using maven.
And if you're trying to use dependencies, it doesn't really matter where you get them from. NPM is as useless as NuGet, as Maven and every other one.

Kotlin can be great, but the amount of syntactic sugar available very easily baits undisciplined devs into writing very concise, wholly incomprehensible code. I’d pick it for a project where I know and trust every dev who will work on it, but not for something that might get a lot of touches from a lot of people.
I've heard of that one but just can't find the time to try it out. What uses is it best for?
