Would be horrible if loads of people made independent clones/mirrors of that repo while it's up again

Could you also imagine how terrible it would be if people started also hosting a bunch more nitter instances now it's up? Think of the shareholders!

Oh shit, real talk.

[Edit, for clarity,] But without open source search engines, most are at the mercy of the oligarchy.

A company known for scraping and stealing copyrighted material is butthurt that someone else is scraping their content. "Do as we say not as we do."

[-] AmyAye@nord.pub 43 points 4 days ago

The phrase you want here I beleive is "rules for thee but not for me."

Do as we say, not as we do is also broadly used. No need to split hairs.

"my nitter instance broke containment and started scraping Twitter...."

[-] madmantis24@lemmy.wtf 8 points 3 days ago

LMAO, yes! I feel like I should start throwing different bot farm projects at the wall and see what "sticks" enough to get me rich ... Except I don't have a clue how to start

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago

Start typing into chatgpt, that's a viable business model now apparently

[-] joyjoy@piefed.social 15 points 3 days ago

Firefox reader mode counts as scraping too. Should Firefox block that feature?

[-] tommy_91@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Well, if it dies again, I’ll leave Twitee.co here as a backup

Seems Xcancel maybe too? It shows a Nitter logo though.

Exit: Iys working, but it redirects to a Nitter clone of some kind with a Nitter domain.

Which is great because it means my DNS redirexts on Twitter links work again.

Does anyone know if there’s a Nitter phone app?

[-] MimicJar@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Not an app but if you're using Firefox on Android then LibRedirect will let you point various sites to wherever you want.

[-] burido@lemmy.world -4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

No, I don't think Nitter works in a way to allow it

[-] gwl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 4 days ago

Well you're wrong

[-] generator@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

Not really an app, only redirects URL from twitter/x to a nitter instance

Was Barbara involved, or did they just fear her?
