For all the foldables that existed till now, only apples feels like a good ratio both open and close. Samsung fold doesn't count as they manufacure the iPhone displays and as usual released them as their own just before apple.

[-] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 hours ago

Apple is a slow development company. Their strategy has never been moving fast on new trends. It’s too volatile. That being said it is kind of embarrassing when they show up so late to the game with this.

[-] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Sure, but they still slap a new name onto an existing technology and pretend they invented that shit, hence the meme.

[-] kurmudgeon@lemmy.world 15 points 20 hours ago

If I had $1 for every time I've personally seen a folding phone in the wild, I'd still have $0.

[-] Doom@lemmy.world 16 points 13 hours ago

I used to have a folding phone.

[-] jumping_redditor@sh.itjust.works 5 points 16 hours ago

dont get out much?

[-] huppakee@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

I've seen a few but it were never the type of people i expected. It weren't nerds or techies or dudes with expensive cars, it was middle-aged women with presumably fake designer bags. Still haven't figuresd out if these are the only people buying foldable phones or I am just not in an area that is representative of their typical buyers. At first I thought they were hand me downs from their husbands, but then I'd have seen at some point a man that might be said husband with one.

No, they were designed with the suburban keeping up with the joneses types in mind

[-] FlyingCrow@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

I might have about $15

I really do find it funny that I never see memes or comments making fun of any other company relating to phones.

Don’t get me wrong. I have had android phones, windows phones, and even PalmOS phones. I know Apple is always behind the times, their comment about copy and paste needing to be perfect before release drove me up a wall. If I remember correctly, it was a jailbreak developer that made copy and paste available on the iPhone a few years before officially being released.

However, I never see people make fun of other companies after they announce a new release. Yall must really hate Apple.

[-] Soggy@lemmy.world 14 points 15 hours ago

Other companies didn't spend a couple decades positioning themselves as a kind of tech-fashion elite. Other companies didn't charge $200 for a crossbody "pocket". So it's funniest when Apple's stupid ideas blow up in their ridiculous image-obsessed faces.

[-] Quique@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

If you dont like it dont buy it. The whole hate lobby at any company is just stupid i.m.o.

[-] Soggy@lemmy.world 9 points 14 hours ago

Oh trust me I don't. And I'm always going to hate classism, which is exactly what Apple is trying to support.

[-] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 47 points 1 day ago

Isn't this what Apple has been doing for decades now? Wait until tech stabilizes and doing it right? It tried to really innovate with the AR/VR headset and it flopped.

[-] Airfried@piefed.social 35 points 22 hours ago

Yeah but they stopped being consistent with the "doing it right" part a long time ago.

[-] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 11 points 18 hours ago

But wrapping everything in a proprietary fence (special connectors, blocked rms bridge, etc) is the very essence of the problem.

[-] Hueristic_Autistic@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

people drove with those 🙄

They did: It's called the Apple Watch.

[-] Zron@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Utterly useless.

Can’t message people, the primary communication system for the target audience, without using cumbersome voice to text.

Can’t browse the internet, the primary use case for a modern phone.

Can’t really answer phone calls without a separate headset.

Can tell time, which is good for a watch. Has a battery life measured in hours, which is laughable for any modern watch.

Anything the Apple Watch can do is better served by the phone that you need to pair with the watch anyway, or a seperate mechanical or digital watch. Or just the phone. It takes 3 seconds to pull out a phone and look at the time.

And if you want heart rate monitoring or pulse oxygen readings: Fitbit did it first years before the Apple Watch. All Apple did was let you struggle to read text messages on a tiny screen that also tells you that your heart rate is elevated.

Everyone's forgetting the true OG: The humble Royole Flexpai

(It was a total piece of shit)

[-] StillAlive@piefed.world 21 points 1 day ago

And all of them start showing crease on the folding line after a few weeks or months.

Given that foldables are 2% of the market, I’m not sure the fact that there are a half dozen (or more) out there already is the flex you think it is.

[-] Zarobi@aussie.zone 10 points 1 day ago

Geez that’s basically the GDP of Australia.

[-] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 2 points 20 hours ago

Is it any more crazy than spending the same for a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8?

https://fossbytes.com/apple-iphone-duo-vs-galaxy-z-fold-8-comparison/

[-] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Both sides the same - crazy to spend that much on a phone, especially when the distinction is “more to go wrong”

[-] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 day ago

True, and nobody wants any of them

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 16 hours ago

It's the price tag, and the fact unfolded they are using a giant squarish format.

Bring me back to the old 16:9 formats, instead. That made sense. You could watch movies, shows, and videos full-screen.

Apparently foldables are a big deal in China. And tbf, I was watching a video and it looks a lot slicker than any of the Android attempts (not that I'm going to buy one).

[-] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 day ago

Who cares who got to market first?

[-] ChexMax@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago

I don't care a lick who was first, I'm a late adopter of all tech, but it is annoying when Apple users tout new features as if they're the first to experience them. It's the condescension that's annoying, especially when it's so misplaced

[-] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

How often is that, really? Seems like more of a meme than anything else. I use their products, and prefer their UI. Is it perfect? Obviously not. But I do enjoy the vertical integration. Handoff just works™. iMessage works well, etc.

There are plenty of features that Android does better, and plenty that it does not. The haters are going to hate regardless.

This meme isn’t the burn that OP thinks it is.

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-mover_advantage

But apple is quite good at showing up late and getting market share anyway.

[-] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 20 hours ago

Sure. It is known that Apple shows up late. Users keep buying their products, so they must be doing something right. 🤷🏻‍♀️
